you choose what you and your h2b like hun, if you ask them, the majority may say one thing but a few may say something else and then you will probably get stick for not choosing that one!
Keep it simple and just make sure you ask people for dietary requirements

Yes i agree, choose what you would rather have, making sure there's a selection for vegetarians etc - if anyone else has any other specific dietary requirements, you can make arrangements for these with your caterer/venue separately :-)

Our venue is allowing us to provide our guests with a choice of menu and this was one of reasons why we decided to book it. They've got 3 starters, mains and desserts to choose from and our Veggies have extra choices for the main meals.

Having been a guest at a couple of my friends weddings i appreciated having a choice of food compared to the wedding where i was given what the couple chose for us to eat, only for the Bride to have something completely different as she chose something for us what she didn't like/wouldn't eat herself?!?!

Yep I agree get what you and H2B like, someone will always say its not what they like. We have someone in H2B's family that only eats sausage rolls (his whole life, can you believe that???) so he will have to cater for himself as far as I am concerned, and I am not paying for his meal either x

We're having 7 types cakes, as well as scones served up, so if the guests don't have a sweet tooth it's tough. The only two people we're doing something extra for are h2bs friend who's vegan and my friend who's allergic to milk and intolerant to wheat. If we were having a more formal meal then we would work it out on what we like, that we thought the majority would eat.

We've chosen what we like and its quite ordinary choice for the starter and main (homemade chicken liver pate, and roast beef with Yorkshire pudding) the dessert is a bit different but sounds yummy (champagne mousse with fresh strawberries) and there's a veggie option. I have asked for special diet requirements on rsvp. Didn't want to give an option with rsvp as we can choose for them, it is OUR day and sure they're doing the honour to be here with us, but in the end WE are paying for it, not them.

We're having a carvery type meal as everyone likes a roast (or I hope) 3 x meats + Veggie option, 7x seasonal veg, spuds and all the gravy & sauces to go with it. No starter as we're doing our own canapes and no pudding as we are making our own pick & mix table and a friend has offered to make a load of cupcakes to go on the table too...plus we're serving the wedding cake :)
So far our cheapest quote is £14 p/hd which is actually a bargain as it includes serving the welcome drink, doing the dinner, cutting the cake and serving it and including the crockery, cuttlery & napkins in the colours I want! Bargain!

Gosh...that actually makes me feel rather hungry........

we picked what we wanted and then they get a vegetarian alternative and thats it!

we picked crayfish and prawn cocktail (tomato soup for OH as he's allergic to shellfish)

Roast beef and all the trimmings (veggie alterative is nut roast)

Baileys Profiteroles for desserts (YUM) (no alternative)

your paying for it so you pick what you want

I'm going to go against the grain here I'm afraid. Yes, the day is about you and your H2B, of course it is. But I'm sorry, I think that when it comes to the food, it's important to consider your guests likes and dislikes, and to go with something that the majority will like.

One of my favourite meats is steak, cooked rare (as in, practically raw); no WAY would I choose this for guests though as a) some people don't like red meat, and b) a lot of people wouldn't touch steak as rare as I like to eat it. So if I picked something like that it would a) be a waste of money and b) my guests, who I do actually like and who I do want to enjoy themselves, would go hungry.

IMPO chicken is the 'safest' option; and if we had to pick a 'fits all' menu (ie with no choices) we would have gone with chicken, as well as a vegetarian option, as I honestly cannot think of anyone I know who wouldn't eat chicken; there are people like me who wouldn't CHOOSE chicken, and who don't exactly love it, but I don't know anyone who wouldn't eat it and actually hates it.

So no, I don't think you should just go with what you like; you should go with something that you think most people will like, even if it wouldn't be your personal first choice.

I'm often the one to be awkward, but I won't eat chicken, which is a nightmare at weddings as it is seen as the 'safe' option. It's not that I don't like chicken, but I only eat free range, which it very rarely is when it's mass produced. So, I have to turn veggie for the day at weddings.

OWB: yeah, I know not everyone likes chicken; but most people do. And typically, as you've said, if you have a particular dislike for it you can go with the veggie option.

You will never please everyone, but IMPO you should be aiming to please the majority, even if that means going for something you don't LOVE, and wouldn't necessarily be your first choice if you were dining out.

I agree with Barbie here on food, I think go with something you enjoy but also consider what the majority enjoys. For my venue we were able to choose two starters for guests, two main and two puddings from an extensive fine dining list. This made it difficult as some of the options were the likes of trout etc so Chris and I chose soup or ham hock, chicken or pork and lemon meringue or banoffee pie. I was lucky that I was able to then chose any vegetarian options for guests on an as and when basis (although have not got any). Everyone so far has pretty much been happy with the options given and I went for my taster on Friday and the food was delicious!

Has your venue given you just one choice or have you got a few?
We were quite lucky (and it was one of the reasons we chose the venue) because our venue gave us an original menu of 9 starters and mains and we had to limit it to 5 choices for each course. The dessert was chosen on the day.

For our 5 choices we chose roast beef (most people went with this), steak, fish, lamb shank and a salad option. We actually sent out the menu with the invites as well, so that guests could choose their meal on the RSVP. We then ordered when we visited the venue, three months before the wedding.

I am in the minority too then! I think there is a compromise to be made between what you want as a couple and desires of your guests. While you cannot please everyone you can go with the majority. I could not bare to have a very specific meal choice and then see all the food go to waste. If we did not want to compromise then we would just go as the two of us to be married.

Our venue gave us a good choice of about 6 different dishes for each course and we chose from there...it was quite easy really as i dont eat fish....so we crossed those off straight away, then there was some sort of cassarole type thinggie ( i thought this was a bit lame...one pot wonder type food..and thought of how this may look on the plate....and also on the male guests ties etc).....so then there was beef with trimmings left or a chicken supreme.....i love both as does my H2B....but then i thought about how the beef will be cooked...everyone is so very different with tastes etc...i mean Kev has it blue! yuck and yuck! ...but my Mum bless her needs to make sure it dead by cremating the stuff! i thought it would be easier to go with the chicken as it has to be cooked through ...end of. We then had a complimentry menu tasting evening so we could make our final choice...Kev had the beef....and i had the chicken! The chicken won hands down and looked really scrummy on the plate, it was a chicken breast with some kind of sauce but it was all fanned ut on the plate and looked a delight to eat! xxx This was served with some baby roasted potatis and some fresh vegetables! i dare anyone to tell me they dont like it! lol
Our starter is Pate with brioche and apricot chutney on a bed of rocket and balsamic. and our dessert is proffiteroles and warn choccie sauce! *scoff scoff* xx
