I know we have ages to go but just looking into everything! How do you choose a photographer?? They are soooooooooo expensive. I know it money well spent because these photos will be with you for life and its very important to capture very special moments of yourself and family and friends, but HOW? Your talking about 800-1500 pound! That like a quarter of our wedding budget. Theres so many out there just how can you choose between them all? ANy ideas and tips would really be appreciated.
Thanks
Natalee
P.S How far in advanced should you pay for them?

Are there any photographers that your venue could recommend? Ours have recommended two. You could get in touch with photographers and see if they have done a wedding at your venue before? Or ask to meet them and look through a portfolio. There are so many people doing wedding photography these days xx

the photographer is an important one cus they are with you most of the day - with venue and dress its one of the top 3 important bits for me. i looked around at wedding fairs to be honest and look at examples of their work and their albums that they have on display. is there anyone else that has got married recently that can recommend or any of your other suppliers?
personally H2B's parents told me about their old friend who does photography - i also spoke to the bridal shop where i got my dress and they personally recommended him too. i knew straight away from the stories they were telling me that he would be the one i would choose. he's professional but a good laugh to be around also gave us a 10% discount for being family friends and a free print for one of our pictures for the wall. we went for the highest package (full price £1110) for 2 photographers but he also brings his wife with him who arranges your dress and just generally helps you throughout the day.
if its price that worries you, then why not go for a smaller package but still with someone who is recommended? perhaps they can just come for a smaller part of the day. and a photographer that is recommended by your venue is good as they will work with your venue often and know wheres best to take the best pics! xx

Have a look at groupon etc...
Photogs are expensive but they have huge liabilities against them if they get it wrong... you can get them cheaper than £800 but I'd be wary of quality and/or what you actually get for your money so hidden extras to pay for like access to your images on a disc may cost more.
We got a fine art photog for £1350... inc all day and a disc of edited images... she was £1500 first but negotiated 10% discount. if you don't ask, you don't get!!!
Hi Natalee, our photographer came recommended, had all the bells and whistles and a history of doing weddings.
However, when we got our pics I was and still am bitterly disappointed. 1/4 of the shots are of random guests with their backs to the camera. There isn't a single shot capturing the detail on my dress and he failed to identify who the wedding party were so there are only 1-2 pics of both sets of parents and none of anyone else important. I know some advise giving a list of shots to be taken but you'd expect the immediate family of the bride and groom to be in some pics! He was using a posh digital camera yet still submitted to us shots were we are squinting because of sunlight etc.
So my advice, don't be fooled by fancy websites and reviews. Take a good look at previous pics and portfolios and confirm to yourself that if those had been your wedding pics, you'd be happy. Are there properly focused images? Details zoomed in on? Photoshop effects mixed in with natural images? Things like that.
Shop around as well. There is no need to pay £1000+ for a photographer when you can get a decent package for £750-£800 in most areas of UK.

Recommendations are usually good, but I think more often than not when you meet photographers you will get a 'feel' of whether you like them or not, we met loads of photographers and none of them really grasped the ideas we were giving them, they all seemed more keen to do it their own way and that's not what we wanted.
The photographer we have now is amazing, she made us feel really relaxed in front of the camera, she totally understands what we want from her and the pictures on her website are just stunning, I couldn't be happier. So I would say see as many as you can within your budget, explain what it is you want and see what kind of vibe you get, you'll know the one when you meet him/her x

We found ours on Book of Face - they must have tagged someone or a place I knew as I saw their pictures then checked their website They are a lovely couple. Our package is £1250 but that is full day from getting ready to evening with two photographers, 500 edited prints, a photo printed on site for guest book frame, all photos on USB stick plus an album costing £550. We felt so at ease with them and they really listened and took on board what we wanted. We were impressed too as they came to our house so we could view their work whereas the other ones I contacted (from a google search of photographers in the area) either didnt respond promptly or wanted to meet miles away - which put us off. I have since been recommended people by friends who have attended weddings or got married but we are happy with our choice.

We chose ours based on some photos he took of my sister a few yrs ago that we're brilliant, he's cost £900 but we get him from 8.30am til 10pm, a storybook album, 2parent albums, DVD slide show, disc of all prints ... I think it's definitely worth it to get a brilliant photographer that will capture the best parts of your day, rather than a rubbish cheap option where u could regret it x

I got mine at a wedding fair in feb 2012 and booked for aug 2014 and got our package at half price so £495 and a free shoot which he did in the may 2012. He was full for 2012 and 2013 back then and had done over 500 weddings lol. We went to a wedding show on sunday and he was there and came straight over to chat and his lovely. He said he normally does 30 weddings a years and already has 25 for 2014. We went md after the show and he came in and sat next to us and had a chat lol. I feel like we now know him quite well. It was one of the first things we booked for our wedding. So i would say check all stalls and packages at wedding fairs now, I had one back in feb 2012 say good luck and walk off when i told him my date as it was so far away, But it just goes to show mine must be really good to have been full for thoses 2 years already and be booking for 2014 back then.

This was the one thing i was worried about but this is what happened; Went to a wedding fayre back in january ann got chatting to the photographer (he was so friendly and instantly felt at ease), then i kept looking around but knew i wanted that company, then went to see him with my H2B in March while he was home on R&R and it just felt right! :) he showed us his work/videos etc and we loved them!! Cannot wait to see our pics once he's done!! Cost £1600 but totally going to be worth it as this is what you'll always have after the special day :)

Things to consider..... ..Price...are they within budget or can you negotiate to within budget or close to it? ..Style...Do you like the style of photography that they showcase in their albums? ..Previous weddings...Can they show you an album of a whole wedding eg one persons wedding album that has been created and given to them. ..recomendations...Do you know anyone who has used this photographer in the past or can you find reviews online? ..what's included...whils some photographers will quote you £1000.00 for pictures from ceremony to fisrt dance they may only include a digital copy of your pictures and tell you an album will cost an extra £400.00. I spoke with a photographer recently who offered me a package from bridal prep to first dance, retouching of pictures as required, one 14x14 wedding album, 2 x 1/2 size parents albums, 4x mini albums, usb/disk with all pictures and a book with all of the proofs to look thrugh to chose which pictures go into the album. This package was offered at £1300.00.
i guess you need to also make sure you both pick what you want from your phototgapher, eg you might want 2 photographers on site but there may be an extra cost, you may choose a packae that costs less with only the digital copy so you can make your own albums. Wedding fairs are a good pace to get the discounts offered also and remember to negotiate on those too xx

We had ours recommended by a friend of h2b's - I was a little worried as I didn't like her website - teach me to judge a book!!
She visited us at home and was fabulous from the moment she walked in the door. She already had ideas of where she could get some lovely before shots outside my house just from walking around outside for 5 mins before coming in lol. She took down details of all our family and special people we wanted photos of - she even made a note of the fact that mine are divorced and are under no circumstances to be forced together lol. She was so down to earth and friendly and she asked if we had any specific type of pictures we wanted and will do a mix of classic and contemporary shots for us as me and h2b have different ideas of what we like.
Then she refused to take a deposit on the day - encouraged us to look around at other people as she was the first we saw and promised to give me a call if anyone else enquired about our date to give me a chance to book her if we wanted. She was upfront and honest about all of the costs involved in booking her including copyright if we want to print off photos ouselves without using her which I wouldn't have noticed in t's and c's i'm sure!! She broke down all of the packages and helped us compare them to see what we really needed and what we could do without.
But I think what grabbed me the most was her obvious enthusiasm about photographing weddings even after 16 years of doing it, and the fact that I thought I liked her enough to have her photographing me and h2b all day esp as I hate my photo and am usually first to duck and cover when I see a camera!

Are any friends/family photographers? My mum isn't a photographer by trade but is by hobby and has done a few weddings and had gorgeous albums made. My brother hired a photographer but I think my mums photos were so much better. Anyway I have three photographers in my family so I'm going to ask them to do photos as a gift and I will order from them and mum can create my album. On my budget it makes sense as mum is going to be with me my whole day. She did my friends wedding and as she is a crafter as well I have never seen any album as stunning .
I know it's controversial to ask guests etc but like my mum said after bros wedding she took the photos anyway.
