well i went shopping today with my mother and my future mother in law, my mum has her outfit sorted but we went to find somethign for MIL after spending hours in the shop we eventually found a nice dress that suits her but she is quite a big lady (size 24) and the dress is sleevless, i asked her if she was planning on getting a jacket/shrug/cardigan to wear with the dress and she said well i dont think i will need one as we wont be outside long. i just think it will look much nicer if she had a jacket of some sort, it will finish the outfit of and cover her arms (dont want to sound nasty) but she is also going to be getting a corsage to wear and i dont think it would look right just pinned on the dress? i thaught they were ment to go on like the lapel of a jacket? (or however you spell it) i just dont no how to tell her that i think she should get a jacket without offending her x

Oooh toughy - v touchy & personal subject! Sounds like she is comortable with herself but maybe u could mention a jacket might be good just incase its old indoors (wonderful use of British a/c!!!) or outside longer than planned? Or for evening?? Is your mom having a jacket? also I agree with Shelley about maybe mentioning that corsages tend to be pinned to jackets - less likely to get pricked by the pin?!!! Haha! Xx

this might sound off but buy her a wrap or something but give it to her on the day of the wedding and get her to wear it just say it adds to it if she doesnt feel comfortable wearing a jacket then a wrap can just "hang" there and it covers just as good without her feeling restricted. x

Does it matter to you if she doesnt wear a jacket? I'm sure some people would think I should probably have a bolero or something with my dress, my mil2b even suggested one but I wont be going for it. Will it make a big difference to you? x

not personally but it would make her look better, more apropriatly dressed if you will, she doesnt have very good dress sence she usually just throws things on regardless of wether they match or look ok or not its like she doesnt even care, she is going to be sitting on the top table with everyone looking at what shes waring being the mother of the groom and all that. it just doesnt look right without the jacket, its like the groom or an usher turning up without a cravat/tie on, wouldnt matter really but you woudnt be happy would you? im not wearing a jacket/balero with my strappless dress but it looks ok without but the style of her dress needs a jacket x

Hmm won't everyone be taking their jackets of to eat anyway?

I agree it might look a bit odd on the photos etc. If she's happy without one, I suppose that's up to her, however if she really just really isn't fussed either way, just buy her one xx

If your getting married in a church, maybe you could mention that bare shoulders are frowned upon in church? Xx

I personally wouldn't say anything to her, should it not be her own choice what she wears?

Find a nice wrap for her to wear. Give it as a gift and just say you saw it and thought it would go really well with her outfit. That way she will probably wear it even for a while.

This wont be a popular answer, and you wont like this, but I think you should just let her wear what she wants to wear. If a bride tried to tell me what to wear, Id go mad. If she chooses to look "different", thats up to her, she needs to be happy and feel comfortable. Just because her dress sense (or lack of) doesnt match yours doesnt make her wrong. Shes your future MIL, you should show her more respect.
