    Hi everyone!
To add to my list of worries I'm now stressing over the thought of not being able to sleep on my wedding night (which is stupid as this will definitely keep me awake!). I'm not one of those people who can sleep easily and can never get to sleep on Christmas (yes still, at 27!!), I never sleep on planes etc. Does anyone have any tips or tricks they could share to help me sleep? I don't want to be a zombie on my wedding day!
    Thank you xx :)

    Im exactly like you.
Ive found that listening to music or watching t.v. helps, it helps take ur mind of things. xx

Thank you, I think listening to music would probably help but TV tends to keep me up :( My brain just won't switch off! It's crazy I'll be about to drop off to sleep and then something 'weddingy' will pop into my head and I'll have to write it down! Nightmare lol. xx

lol. once everything is paid for and bought you should be able to switch off the weddingy pop ups.
try warm milk and music, works for me even with h2b snoring his head off. xx

Maybe one of the nytol herbal tablets they always seem to work for me and dont leave me feeling like i have a hangover the next day, i would try them before hand first just to see how you feel the next day xx

I was shattered the night before, so went to bed but just laid there wide awake. Was really frustrating to be honest, but I dropped off eventually. There was that much going on on the day that I didn't have time to think about being tired! Don't worry hun, you'll be fine :)

    xx

Oooh, Nytol is a good idea. I was a bit worried about trying sleeping pills as I didn't want to feel groggy the next day but they're only herbal so I'll give them a go :)
Think I'll probably tire myself out enough the day before so fingers crossed that will help! Thanks ladies xx

Yeah, think it's worth a try. As higginszajac suggests I'll try them before the wedding day to make sure there's no 'hangover' feeling! xx

I am exactly the same, I know I won't be able to switch off the night before! So I am going to have a glass of wine (just the one - don't want to be hungover!!) as it always helps me drift off, hopefully that will work!

OK I have serious issues with insomnia so here are my tips:

Avoid caffeine all day the day before your wedding, this includes fizzy drinks.

Eat some sliced banana before you go to bed, the slight elevation in blood sugar helps you settle.

Clean bedsheets and a hot bath or shower before bed.

Try your best in the run up to the big day to maintain fairly routine sleep cycle

Meditate for 5-10 minutes before you go to bed, this will help clear your thoughts, there are good relaxing soundtracks on the tube of you.

Finally, valerian root, you can buy bottles of it at a well known supplements shop chain, it helps make you drowsy and is safe to take, it smells foul but has no taste at all.

As a last resort you could ask your GP if they will prescribe one or two sleeping tablets, explain that you're anxious about the wedding and are feeling tired/don't want to be exhausted on your big day.

    Cat x

make sure you've had a good tea (no matter how excited you are a full belly will help you sleep)
If you're staying at home the night before get yourself a nice relaxing bath, with candles, relaxing music etc.
Then get yourself comfy in bed with a book or film and have a horlicks! (I suffer from horrific nightmares and horlicks just knocks me out lol)

I didn't sleep till 1am the night before, and woke up at 5am to see if my mum was asleep yet - she was still finishing our cake! Then I slep again till about 7am and that was it, but don't worry about feeling tired as the adrenaline seriously keeps you going all day, and if you're getting your make up done then the base coverage is so good you won't see any circles under your eyes!!

Ok I am just the same, Christmas eve I am up wide awake bouncing on the bed waiting for santa lol

My tip (other that sleeping tablets - always a last resort). - Meditate.

My way which is not the traditional way lol
Sit, Lie, Stand - whatever - Eyes closed, Big deep breathe in through the nose, out of mouth, saying to myself, goodness in, badness out, and then when I feel like Im calming, night time in, daytime out................My h2b wets himself everytime lol#

My h2b tip for sleeping.......Bearing in mind we are both strange........he is convinced that if he cant sleep he reads a psalm (from the bible) on insomnia and then puts the bible under his pillow and he sleeps...........granted I dont know whether this works as I am always flat out by the time he comes to bed.................or he does the MOST ANNOYING thing ever, wakes me up to tell me he cant sleep so then I cuddle him so he falls asleep and I am left wide awake for a couple of hours lol

Depending on what time you're getting married, how about a beer or two lol.

We got married at 2.45pm but went out to the local pub with some of the guests the night before (we were staying in a hotel). We finished up having a LOT more than we'd planned and I finally got to bed about 2am but I definitely got a good nights sleep lol.

I can't sleep the night before Christmas or my birthday or on planes. In fact if I'm not in a bed of my own or with someone I can cuddle with a blanket and a pillow I can't sleep. Luckily I suffer from slight insomnia brought on by stress from work and they occasionally make me work night shifts so have had to find a sleeping aid that works. I have sominex (not the herbal one) and it leaves me with no problems in the morning. The only side effect I have found is if i don't have 8 hours sleep I have a headache in the morning. But some painkillers soon shift that.

I sympathise with you... I'm not a great sleeper and struggled to sleep the night before I ran a marathon earlier this year. There are great suggestions here, particularly from Polekitty (I sympathise with you too!)... I would add that bananas also contain potassium and magnesium, which are natural muscle relaxants. Also try cherries, which are one of the only natural food sources of melatonin, the chemical that controls the body's internal clock to regulate sleep. Classics like porridge and warm milk are also good, as are a handful of almonds. Anything you eat should be light and about an hour before bedtime.

Anything you try should be tried for as many nights as possible before the night itself, to get into a routine and to find what works for you.

Finally, if you are awake the night before, don't worry. Get up for 10 minutes or so, read a little, take a quick bath, whatever you fancy to distract yourself. When you go back to bed tell yourself you are happy to lie still with your eyes closed, because this will give your eyes a good rest at least. You'll probably find that when you stop trying and worrying, you'll drift off. And if you don't? Adrenaline and excitement will see you through the next day, and you'll have a wonderful time :-)
