Hi, I bought my dress last week and they were going through options for putting the train up in the evening - either tying it over the top or bustled up underneath. But I think I just want a ribbon put on so I can have it around my wrist. Is that really old fashioned? What is everyone else doing? x
CommentAuthorbrilly
ive been thinking about this too hun and think I may just have a loop stitched in to go on my wrist x
31st August 2013 I became Mrs Carrick
Cant wait to do it all over again in 2018

A lot of people use the loop. The benefit of the bustle is that your arm doesn't get tired and the train is kept off the ground so your less likely to get footprints all over your dress.

I was going to go for the loop. May look into having a bustle now though.

I'm going for a bustle underneath, on advice of a friend, as she had a loop on her wrist and said by the end of the night her arm was killing her.

Yea lots of people have a loop put on so it holds the train up.

My dress already had a little lop on the bottom, which was great for when you are walking around for the pictures etc, as you can pick it up carry it and pop it down again for the photos. I did have a bustle for the evening which was a god send with a long train, carrying it all night would have been a pain and properly of hurt my wrist. Movement was a lot easier with a bustle and personally i think looks tidier xx

Think my dress has a bustle.
MrsD - its where the train can be gathered up and attached to a loop/hook under the skirt so all sits nicely, and means train doesnt get trampled on... So then all sits at one length:

Only thing i will say its with the train down for the night is when on the dance floor with people, it gets stood on all the time! I got my dress stood on with the bustle, and people where avoiding me! I also had my baby nephew chasing me around all night to stamp on my dress. It depends on the type of bustle for the dress, mine had a tiny little loop which was a couple of second job to hook onto a button on my dress, so it was easy to take it on and off for the pictures in the evening etc xx
Here was what mine look like (only pics ive got sorry)

Ellie I agree that it's important to understand how much that dress will get stepped on. At the last wedding I attended the brides dress was a mess the next morning, the entire train had foot prints on it and the hem around the front had a fair few as well. She just used the wrist loop & gave up on that when she got too tired. For a dress that has so much invested in it, it's a wonder that there isn't more information on how to keep in one piece during the big day.

I am having mine bustled, they are attaching a button underneath so the detail on the train can still be seen but its up and out of the way, my train is massive though. It already has a loop so I could loop it over my wrist but I think it would impeed my evening a bit because I would never have that hand free and then if the loop breaks which I have seen many times before you have nothing to fall back on and as my train is so long it actually still trails on the floor a bit even with the loop. THey are charging me £10 to put the bustle button on, maybe if buget would stretch you could have both, the bustle and the wrist loop so you can change your mind if you want to?

In fact, you can ask experience tailor to make your dress detachable, which means the skirt is detachable. The length is usually knee length, which really makes it convenient for your whole evening.

I'll be going for the wrist loop, just because it seems easy really x

it made life so much easier and i didn't have to juggle with the loop over my wrist, my dress was so heavy i don't think i would have handled it if it was on a loop

mine was tulle velcro and i went for an outer bustle instead, they literally put a loop on the seam on the train it was tiny and then the ribbon from the corset was threaded through it and tied in a bow so it was all tidily put up near my bum hahaha

My only concern with the bustle is what it does to the overall shape of the skirt. I would be tempted to have a train that can simply be removed after the photos.

a good seamstress can give you a bustle that doesn't change the look of the dress, they can show you different options

My dress apparently already has a bustle so it's ready to do if I wanted to. However I have absolutely no idea how to bustle it, how would I find this out. I brought my dress second hand privately so can't even go to the shop to ask! Looks so confusing as I have a lot of material for my train. Please help! X

I had a hook on my dress to bustle up the train and people still kept standing on my dress when it was bustled up! To the point where the hook broke halfway through the evening when someone stood on the back of my dress as I was walking. I've always been so careful not to stand on the brides dress at a wedding but in reality so many guests dont notice what they are doing! During the night my friend kept trying to pin it back up with a safety pin but the material was heavy and the pin couldnt hold and kept pinging open so I just had to make the best of it. It was hard work, im not gonna lie! A detachable train sounds like a fab idea, wish I had known about it x

Thanks for all of the responses! My dress is silk, with quite a short train, so I don't think it would be heavy. I guess I'll have to see what it looks like bustled at the fitting and decide then. I don't think there is any way the train could be taken off because of the design of the dress, there are not lots of layers or anything, its quite slim fitting.

i'm going to ask the seamstress who is doing my alterations what she would recommend, i'm planning on some sort of bussel as I know I'll get fed up of it being on my wrist x

I had neither and it wasn't a problem in Vegas, but it WAS a problem for the UK party. I had the train draped over my arm for most of the evening and I would not recommend this - my arm became very painful as a result LOL!
