I've been several times - the most recent time was about 2.5 years ago when hubby proposed to me! We both love cycling so that plays a large part of our visits over there. I can highly recommend JoyRides for that. They can do private tours too and they are very reasonably priced.
Definitely take a stroll down the red light district, but I probably wouldn't recommend staying in that area. I did that with a couple of friends once as we were on a really tight budget and the 'hotel' was a flea pit, the noise never-ending and we were constantly propositioned by drug dealers on the corner of every street in that area. I can cope with that for a short time, but not every time we wanted to go out LOL!
You have to visit the Van Gogh mesurm there and of course (and especially if you're on a hen do) then there's the s£x museum, which is really funny, but strangely erotic too LOL!
My main advice would be steer clear of the main touristy bits for eating or you'll end up over-paying for cr@ppy quality food - there are much better places which are much better value for money to be found. Definitely pick up a guide book before going - they have some great tips in there.
    ENJOY! I'm envious - I love that place! x

If I remember correctly, the ones nearer the square would be better as the ones near Central (prounounced Centraal) are often posted as being there, but are likely to be in the red light district as they are very close together.
The last time we went we actually stayed out of town a bit, which was quite nice, but a bit of a drag, but fun going on the trams (if you're confident about using public transport in a foreign country then it's not a problem). We still laugh at this as the automated voice says, 'thank you for using your public transport chip card' as you tap in and out of your tram journey (imagine this in a Dutch accent, and it's quite funny).
To be honest, all areas are OK - they've really cleaned things up there recently and I never felt threatened or anything like that, I just don't like being offered drugs constantly. And I was always very nice and polite when refusing, which I think helps! It's jsut a personal preference thing.

I love love love Amsterdam. One of my favourite museums is NEMO, it's a science and industry type museum (which I know sounds dull!). As soon as you enter you feel like a kid again, it's so much fun - there's a shadows wall that can be used to make some very rude images on (not that I'm childish), and there's a 'beach' on the rood with sandcastles. For daytime wandering, I like Jordan and the Bloemenmarkt.

As LK says, you have to visit the Red Light District, but don't stay there. China Town, just off the RLD has some really good places to eat and isn't too expensive. The s.e.x. museum is a giggle too.

I've stayed just out of town every time, as the trams are so simple to use and run every few minutes - this way you get to see a little more - I found some really cool clothes shops last time I was there. Also, eating becomes cheaper the further out you go. Last time I went with my mum and we stayed way out, we did notice the restaurant staff are less likely to speak English - we weren't entirely sure what we were going to be eating, but the beer was good!

The only place I avoid is between Centraal Station and Dam Square, that street is a dive.

Amsterdam is a lovley city. Just watch out for the cyclists! They will run you over, and ask questions afterwards! Lol. Shopping is good as well. As for the sex museum, well the are two eye openers there to greet you as you go up the stairs! <ahem!>:-)
