I would work out a) what you can realistically save over the course of your engagement (so, take account of all outgoings, and be realistic ie you need to allow yourself enough for treats and emergencies,l you can't live hand-to-mouth for the next however many years) and then b) decide how much of that you want to save (eg you might be in a position where you can easily save £20k, but you might prefer to spend £5k).

Then, once you have that figure, go from there and work out what your priorities are, and apportion the money accordingly

I would say give yourself the maximum you would be happy to spend ... Then divide that monthly and see if you can save that each month over your engagement ( remembering that things have to be paid fore before the main day and that other things may crop up ... Car repairs etc )

This is how I'm doing it :)
Firstly checking how much savings we have in the wedding account and then we looked around and priced venues, with this in mind we also looked at what extra savings we could add to the pot within the time period and also checked when venue needed paying etc .
The next stage is the add on bits so invitation's, decorations etc This we have looked around for and taken into account the higher priced one into budget then we are looking to finally getting this sorted and hopefully save money by shopping around.

Write down items needed and estimated costs and then when you get final cost put that next to it to show over or under and thus show what left in the pot :)

    Hope that makes sense lol

We probably did things a bit backwards. We viewed our venue first and got an estimate from them - we weren't even actively looking to plan our wedding at that stage, we were just in the area of this venue we had seen online so thought we would spontaneously pop in. We ended up getting shown around the whole place and then booked an official appointment with the wedding coordinator who then gave us the estimate.

We then looked at what we already had in savings then calculated how much we would both be able to save every month. We made a list of everything we would need to pay for and put rough costs next to everything after doing a little bit of online research. x

Budget planning is melting my head at the moment. I want to save it ourselves, he says see what we can save and get a loan if we need a top up - ARGH! No wonder I can't plan anything. Sorry I'm also having a pants day in work so my mood isn't great! xx

I finally got one in a supermarket and then yesterday went to a different area and new pots were being put in the window display, I have placed it in the hallway so H2B can put his money in straight away so no excuses lol

I have just bought one of those money tines that you cant open without a tin opener, and we are only putting 2 pound coins in, and what ever is left in my purse is going in a separate jar, apart from pound coins x

yer I have one of the ones u need a tin opener for and thats the one the pounds are going in.

Just did a quick off the top of my head budget I know most of it wont cost as much but its off the to of my head the most i dont feel bad spending on each part so total is £18,275 but I know Im going to cut that down as Im going to try and do as much as I can myself.

You have plenty of time until the big day so one thing is to take advantage of is sales as that will save some money and you are not losing out on quality especially if you are doing loads yourself :)

yer might cause us to set the year back abit with me going to collage we are losing a nice chunk of our income but it can be done for cheaper as i doubt I will need £1000 for my handfastening and i doubt I will find a dress for £1000 and some of the costs like decor i doubt i will spend more then maybe £200 if i manage to do as much as i want myself

I went from both directions at once, if that makes sense. I started looking around to get an idea of the costs of things. At the same time I looked at what we had already. We were lucky as both sets of parents made generous contributions. I knew roughly what H2B had saved, and I looked at my own budget to see what I could realistically save. Then we started working out what we would need to spend to get what we wanted, so we could see where we could cut back.
