I looked at lots of other people vows online to get some inspiration.

Best thing to do is decide together how long (1 x A4 side etc) and what type of vows (serious, fun, etc) as it's important to have some sort of balance - you don;t want to be promising to walk the 4 corners of the earth for him when he's vowing to always put the loo seat down.

Then just write everything you want to say, then work from there. I have pages and pages of quotes, poems, memories, and random thoughts at the moment which I will use to create my vows.

From the heart! My OH and I have written our own vows. Like Wunda said, we made sure they had the same sort of "feel" and that they were around the same length, but apart from that we don't know what the other has written. I wrote mine over a good few months... so if a thought popped into my head I could make a note of it and edit the vows I already had, play about with them etc. until they were spot on and I was happy with them. I wouldn't put pressure on yourself to get them done first time x

You could also look at the standard church ones, which you can find online, and use them as a starting point. There are certain things you have to include, and a registrar should be able to tell you what those are. I think it's basically the things about being faithful to each other for life and sharing everything that you have to put in, but I'm no expert. We had a church wedding so had to use the standard vows.

30th August 2014 was the best birthday ever.
It was the day that I became Mrs. Dixon.

You don't have to say any particular things in your own personal written vows - you still have to repeat legal vows on top which obviously cover the legal side of things. Your personal vows or "promises" as they're sometimes called are for you to say what you want :-)

Maybe spend some time picturing the way you want your marriage to be and how you want both of you to act and go from there. How you act towards each other, how you tackle problems, how your day to day interactions are with each other etc.

Thank you for the advice ladies. I think I'll sit and write how he makes me feel, how I see our lives together then see how I can put them all into something heartfelt with a few jokey quotes thrown in

Mark. When I try to think of a way to describe how you make me feel I am lost for words. There is nothing I can find to explain how I feel. When I look at you I still get butterflies, when you smile or touch my hand I get shivers all over. When we first got together Many said we wouldn't last but how wrong were they!! 8 years on and here we are. I couldn't imagine my life without you. You have given me 2 wonderful children and made my life complete. With the way you make me feel it's easy to forgive you for your snoring or not putting the toilet roll on the right way round. so from this moment on I promise to love you, cherish you and try to make the rest of our lives together the best the best they can possibly be. My love, my world, my best friend, my soulmate forever.
