As some of you may know, we are having little pots of homemade jam as our wedding favours. MIL and I made half the pots of blackcurrant jam the other week and my dad will do the rest as plum jam.
We had some blackcurrant jam leftover once we'd filled the jars so we put the rest in a normal size jam jar to take home and eat now. It is absolutely delicious. However I've just had some on toast and as I was eating it, I notice something black, gave it a poke (as you do) and realised it was the remains of a wasp (eeewww).
When we made the jam we strained it through a jelly bag (like a big muslin material sieve) in the garden as it was a nice day and MIL has just had her kitchen redone - last year we split hot apple jelly everywhere but that doesn't stain like blackcurrant would. We had it all covered in the garden but obviously this wasp got in.
Now we have 50 pots of jam that might have a wasp in. So my question is, do we bin the jam and start again (but have to use something else as the blackcurrants are finished) or do we hope that this was the only wasp and use them anyway and if anyone finds one just say "well at least that proves its homemade"?
In the meantime, there was only half a wasp on my bit of toast so does that mean I've eaten the other half?!?!?!? Or is the other half still in one of the pots somewhere....x

Can u check them all with a bright light? See if they have any black In. And without sounding silly could the black stuff just be black current pips or Was it defo wasp? X

And I wouldn't think about eating half of it as a) ur never no so will just gross you out but b) could it have been pushed through the jelly bag? Sorry if I sound silly x and well done on making your own jam :) I've not a clue where I would start x

GF if we were to check the jam out I think we would have to melt it all down to get it back in the jars and that could mess up the consistency maybe...
It was definitely a wasp. It had a sting still attached and everything. I think it probably got in to the pot beneath the jelly bag where all the jam was dripping into.
The light is a good idea MrsC. Maybe we can check all the jars as the jam should be really smooth after going through the jelly bag. X
Let me know how u get on :) with the light should show any black bits n fingers crossed you find the other half haha least u know the stingers not in it x

Oh my days what a nightmare! Good luck hunting with the light :\
It's not as if you're selling it, it should be OK.

Aww nooooo what a nightmare- I would def try the light thing, if not then to be sure you may have to tip in all back in pan reheat quickly and then put back in jar? Or you could just leave as is and hope for best- good luck xx
