What is his experience in? if you go for the pre wedding shoot are you then under obligation to go with him? if not go for the shoot, see what the pictures are like then make your mind up.

I think that you probably need to look at what work he has done in the past, and also sit with him and discuss how you want your photos (formal or informal) and what knowledge does he have of taking wedding photos he may have all the knowledge and know what to do but just hasnt got the experience side of it. I hope my babbling helps!

If he is a portrait photographer your probably ok, as he has experience photographing people for a start lol! but i would erge you to go and look at his work and get him to photograph you outside, my degree is in art and photography and i know that it can be very different photographing people outside as the light is so different and can change the whole feeling of the photograph. Taking photographs outside need to have different poses to capture the light, when as in the studio he/she can force the light to a particular area.

Always do two basic things - check their work (all of it) and make sure you like what you see. The other thing is have a cuppa and chat with him and make sure you feel comfortable.
Good luck with it. Exciting times!
