A few years ago my mum gave me my nan's (dad's mums) wedding and engagement rings. My nan died just before my first birthday so don't remember her but these are the only things of hers we have. I am considering getting her wedding ring resized to fit so I can use this as my own wedding ring. Has anyone else done this or something similar? do you think this is a good idea? I am really undecided, if I didn't have to resize it I think the decision would be made but the thought of cutting a part out.....I don't know.

I think it's a lovely idea :-) And don't think of it as cutting some out, you're just making it fit :-) xx

Check with a jeweller, I think it's possible to have a ring resized without losing any of the gold x

well the ring isn't a plain ring it is a series off hearts, each has a different small stone so the pattern also needs to be matched up. I have checked and it is possible but they will not be able to add the remaining back in, however I can keep it incase it ever needs to be added back. If that makes sense. At the moment I would like to actually ask permission from my Dad as it was his mum and he has more memories of it and her etc. I'm sure he won't mind but it would make me feel better I think

Its a lovely idea.
Im sure iv seen a ring resized before where the just add something onto the ring on the inside to make it smaller without changing the ring itself.

I think it sounds lovely. I would be using my grandmothers ring only the hospital lost it (!!) when she died :(

We think its a great idea. If its in good condition and hasn't worn too thin (as some old rings do because they are very soft gold) it will be fine. The jeweller who resizes it for you should also clean and repolish it - so it will look beautiful. If its done properly they should be able to resize it without spoiling the pattern of removing any stones - unless its a big difference. You just need to talk to the jeweller and make sure they understand exactly what you are expecting - get them to provide you with a written quotation for the work which explains exactly what they will do. You should also ask them how long they will guarantee their work for.Your best bet would be to find a small independant - the jewellery chains on the high street don't do this sort of work themselves - they send the ring to a 'jobbing' jewellery craftsman - but sometimes the workmanship isn't too good.
I hope I haven't scared you - it should be fine as long as you can find a jeweller that can demonstrate their workmanship. The only problem is that it could cost quite a bit of money to do this as it is not a simple job.

No not scared at all :) I have had quite a few rings fixed or resized in the past but just wondered if it was ok for such a special ring. Although it is mine now I have to admit I'm not sure my dad even knows I have it or whether my mum just passed it down anyway lol. I am going on holiday with my whole family next month so feel its only right to ask my dad first before looking for someone to do it. Cheers everyone

minty - yes you can - I'm having it done to my engagement ring, as although H2B got it spot on when he proposed, I was very heavily pregnant and swollen so it's now quite loose! linz - I'm sure you'd be able to keep the piece that was cut out? x
