Hi all you lovely ladies and gents, well its not long til I get married now its 3 months on sat the invites have now gone out. now for our reception we are having a 3 course meal and everybody gets a choice plus the children have their own menu which is soup, sausages and mash and ice cream sound fair????? what kids wont like that? that's why we chose it.
Well 1st of all h2bs sister gets her invite : his niece wont eat sausages, so we change to fish fingers for her, so I was like not sure at 1st cause you shouldn't dictate a wedding menu or is it just me? then I thought ok its a small change so we did that thinking the soup and ice cream would still be ok....................guess what the niece doesn't like ice cream whaaaaaaaaaaaaatttttttttt???????
I then decide to laugh at this as its really stupid...............then sil2b announces mil2b has to have a different dish!!!!!!! now mil2b has said to me she is quite happy to have the salmon or vegetarian option, (the adults menu is salmon, steak or veggie) on saying this to h2b he just says it would be easier for his mum to have chicken as she does not keep well. and im like eh? that's not what she said to me and h2b is like well maybe shes embarrassed.
Im so stressed and feel like people are poking holes in the menu :( im sitting here crying im so stressed out. am I over exaggerating things? I was always brought up like if you went to a wedding you DID NOT DARE dictate the menu u would just eat up and shut up!!!! am I wrong to be this stressed out? what would you all do? do you all think its nothing?
Sorry for the long read folks :(

Just put your foot down, you cannot cater to every single person's tastes... We've just decided on our menu and if anyone doesn't like any of the 3 options we've given them, they are welcome to bring a packed bloody lunch and save us the £66 a head on the meal that we're buying for them!!!

I said this to h2b but he was like oh but its my niece, it would be different if it were somebody else now its his well sister his mum hasn't said anything to me I just feel like the sister is trying to pick faults. ive told him you cant have bloody 72 different choices for each person
CommentAuthor*KelBel*
Ha I had this exact discussion with my h2b when he wanted to give 6 choices instead of 2... I just said it bumps the bill up because two of the choices she might only cook for say 2-3 ppl but they have to bring in an extra chef to prepare the extra dishes...so I put my foot down and said no definitely 2 is enough!

I kind of think you are blowing it out of proportion hun. If it were other guests then I would say leave it but it is your h2b's niece and mum! I am having to do some changes because my nan will not eat pork (this is what we are having) and neither will my brother, and kids are sooo picky that they will be having a choice of three meals they can have (one will be a smaller version of the adult meal) and they will have to pick from them (there's around 16 kids coming). With three months left to go to your wedding I personally think you are just adding stress to yourself whilst worrying about this. Just change their meals and make it clear you wont be changing it for anyone else. Hope you can get it all sorted xxxx

If there are genuine health reasons for a different dish fine, otherwise people should accept the set menu, unless they're paying their own way. Our hotel requests us to choose a set three course meal from a wide-ranging list. They request that every adult guest has the same except for particular dietary requirements. At our wedding breakfast we will have two vegetarians who will have the same vegetarian choice, and one gluten intolerant guest, so we will have to talk separately about her, and probably check with the chef which options are safe. They offer a separate children's menu for under 12s, and then we just have one odd one, H2Bs SIL, who has a real phobia of food and only eats a small handful of foods. While not a medical issue, it's more than just being picky, so we are probably going to cater separately for her, as it is a genuine psychological problem. Hopefully there'll be something suitable on the children's menu that can simply be served as an adult sized portion.

i went to wedding last week and we didn't know what the menu was until we turned up on the day and got our order of service and i tell you something there weren't many people who didn't eat it.
I can understand if you had special dietary requirements like my brother did at our wedding, he is allergic to gluten but he still had the same.
If there is no reason for there pickiness then just tell them there are no alternatives.
If you have 3 options then there is something on there that most will eat i can assure you.
Our menu only had the set menu and a veggie option that was it! so that fact you have a choice is a bonus.
I can understand the kids causing a fuss hun and speaking to the venue is the only was round seeing what else she can have instead.
MIL2B should just eat up and shut up! (sorry to be harsh but you shouldn't have to deal with this rubbish from anyone)
hope you sort it soon xxx

My venue gave us the option but said we had to choose one starter, one main and one pudding for everyone. Only veggies, or people with allergies or other dietary problems could change. Kids have their own menu too. We choose chicken nuggets coz I don't now a kid who doesn't like them including he two fussiest eaters around (my kids). My kids won't eat sausages, mash or fish fingers. One will eat pizza the other wont. Both will eat dry cooked pasta no sauce no cheese. In fact their isn't much I manage to get them o eat :( Don't let everyone dictate your wedding. And if they try don't let it get to you xx

I have to agree with Mrs Mann, if there is no dietary requirements then they shoud have the same as everyone else, if your mil2b has said she will hve the salmon then give it to her hun thats what she has chose off the menu you have originally. if you start changing for one then everyone else will want a change then there would be no point in the menu to start with. If they dont like what they are eating they can leave it surely they are not going to starve to death within a few hours xx

I would change the menu for a child. Adults can eat anything unless they have a dietary requirement, but I don't think children should be given something they don't like.

I have accepted and chosen a different menu for the neice-she is mentally handicapped she is 14 and has the mental age of a 2 year old! so although she would quite happily eat burgers she wont touch sausages but then again sil2b said on the day she may not eat fish either! well weve changed it for her and that's that. now the mil2b-(the only thing she has is liver disease and cannot eat red meat so obviously cannot have the steak) has not said anything to me this is the sil2b picking holes and saying oh mil2b will have to have this and she wont eat that etc..... however mil2b has quite happily said she will have something from the menu, but when I told h2b he was like maybe she doesn't want to cause a scene (but sil2b is quite happy to cause a scene) I agree with brilly and also told h2b that if we change for one guarantee every one else will want changed but he disagrees and says its only because its his mum and neice. this is absolute driving me daft the stress is unreal
CommentAuthorElinor Claire
It seems perfectly reasonable to draw the line at the niece. Fair enough, someone with a mental age of two needs to have something that they like, but if the MIL2B is able to eat fish then I don't see the problem.

right I have taken matters into my own hands!!!!! refuse to be this stressed out leading up to my wedding!i have just come off the phone to mil and said is she ok with the menu? (I didn't say the sil2b had said anything) and yeah she said she will either have salmon or veggie option she just can touch steak :D I knew I could phone her because mil2b is a lovely women and will talk about anything so basically I figure it out as just sil2b trying to meddle again!
I don't know why sil2b always has to try and meddle with things but if she says that to me again about the mum next time I wont keep quiet il tell her no the mum has said to me twice now she will have either the salmon or veggie option!!! some people eh??

Glad you have sorted it out mrsR2B, sometimes the best thing to do - is the simplest thing. TALK to them :)
Generally speaking though, im not giving anyone any choices. ive picked based on what I know the majority will eat. Basically, just played it safe. we wont be able to please everyone, and frankly, I don't care. Im not picking anything obscure like battered octopus or bread coated goat testicles.
Ive had a grumble about it being a hot buffet and not a sit down meal. but again. I don't care. We are having a late wedding and I don't want the night to drag on and on over the food.

Glad you have managed to sort it hun, if she says it's fine then why are others making such a fuss over it? xx Again, like Velcro am not really giving people choices (except if it's a dietary requirement), going with what the majority would like as you can't please everyone. xxx
CommentAuthorHalebob85
I think you're being generous with the 3 options. All weddings I've been to it's been a sit down and see what we're given. Having 2 meat options for mine as I like chicken but h2b doesn't, so he can have steak. Those 2 usually cover most people, and obviously a veggie option with one vegan and one gluten free. I think it's bad manners for people to kick up a stink when they're getting fed for free unless for dietary reasons. My vegan friend went to one of her school friends weddings and they had requested a vegan meal for her but they didn't have it. She didn't want to upset her friend on her wedding day and have her sort it out so she only had chips the whole day.

glad youve sorted it nice and quick.
I'm not giving anyone a choice either, it will be a cold meat buffet. The dietary requirements I am aware of are:
My son, currently 5 years:allergic to milk protein - so EVERYTHING in the buffet will be made using ingredients he can have. Grandparents: Diabetes - Salads, meats etc are all fine so long as they do not eat too much dessert! Me & Nan: IBS - No bread rolls for us!
No one else has any dietary requirements and if everything is made using ingredients my son can have (ie oatly milk rather than animal milk, soya spread rather than butter/margerine, etc) then it stands to reason everyone can eat it (no ones complained when ive cooked for them before using my sons ingredients) so they sure as hell wont get the opportunity to complain at my wedding! plus if everything is made using his ingredients i wont spend the whole time panicking that whilst my back is turned the in laws will be giving him something that will make him sick!
Find out who you are & do it on purpose!

Well when I went to my FILB2Bs wedding a few years a go I did not like either option as it was salmon or pasta veggie option which are the only 2 foods I really hate, but I just had the veg option and ate it without a moan as its their wedding and they put all the effort in.
As a grown up I can easily eat food I don't like and if I child does like everything its up to their parents to quickly sneak them them food to keep them going, simple.

Glad you got it sorted... If your MIL has something off the menu, then she's not going to get people asking her why hers is different, which may be uncomfortable for her having to explain or think of an excuse. You've done we'll to please all but two, to be honest! And as for not liking ice cream... Well, she can have cake instead! :-)
CommentAuthorJennyHeather
Glad it's sorted.
It's tough titties if people don't like the food we've chosen, they've only got one option unless they're a vegetarian lol.
