Hi everyone, I am having a church wedding but will not be being married at the church in my area meaning i will need to get my banns read at my parish and then at the church we will be married at.
I am struggling to get info from the church on what I do next. Would anybody be able to shed some light on how i get my banns read and when? especially when two churches are involved?
Many thanks x

Hi Nicole,
Banns are a formal process to see if anyone in the parish has any objections to you being married. They are normally read out in the Sunday morning service three weeks prior to the wedding. You and your partner will be expected to attend those services, I would assume it would just be in one church.
Other than turning up there isn't really any other involvement needed the church will sort the rest out.
Hope that helps :)

thanks Stacey that helps clear it up :)
We have been told that we need the banns read at our parish first and then at the church we are to be married in and given that it must be done 3 weeks prior I am wondering how we get both done.
I will see if i can get any further answers from the church

Hi Nicole, I've just a quick internet search. The page I read stated that Banns must be read on three Sundays during the three months before the wedding, so hopefully that would give you time to get Banns read in both parishes xx

thank you :) that's really helpful, i was just worried that if i had to have the banns read at my parish first would that be too early? but yes if it is within the three months not exactly three months thats doable :) x

Hi Nicole. We had a church wedding, in the Anglican church that my husband attends (I go to a Methodist church). Neither of us lived in the same parish as the church we married in, and we didn't live in the same parish as each other, so we had to have them read in three churches. It has to be on three consecutive Sundays in the three months before the wedding, in the main Sunday Eucharist service. You just need to speak to the parish priest or church warden for each church to let them know when the wedding is, so they know the earliest and latest that they can be read. They'll probably do them on the last three Sundays unless you specify otherwise. It doesn't matter if the readings in different churches coincide. We weren't expected to attend the services where our banns were read, although we wanted to get to at least one reading in each church. My husband was on placement as a lay reader for a few weeks in his local parish church in the run up to the wedding so they did the banns there while he was with them, and I went to one service. We went to the first reading at my local church, and hubby was obviously there for all the readings at the church he attends but I didn't get to any. After the last reading in your local church a banns certificate will be provided by the priest. It will probably be given to you to pass on to the priest who is marrying you, who legally has to see it before they can marry you. However the priest at my husband's local parish church gave it straight to the priest who was marrying us, as he knew her well and saw her frequently. There will be a fee as well, unless it's a church you regularly attend in which case they might waive it. The church will tell you when they want payment.
30th August 2014 was the best birthday ever.
It was the day that I became Mrs. Dixon.

Hiya! We were exactly the same - our wedding was in a different church. You'll need to ring the vicar/ parish office of your local church and arrange to have them read. I'd do this nice and early - we met the vicar of our local church in March/ April to have our banns read in June from memory. But whatever you do make sure that you get your banns certificate from the church in your area - you won't be able to get married without it! xxxx
