A major newspaper called like what's shining during the day and sets at night had an article about Couple supposedly spending over 20k on their big day and the first couple featuring (Kelly &Tim) are OH's cousin we went to their wedding last year. MIL2B told him last night as it came out at a little bit of a scandal, and OH was as surprised as I was knowing that this bride kept telling me all along her wedding planning how she was proud to pay for her own wedding with her life savings (and daddy's help paying for food and drinks at venue) and telling me how bad it is to start your life in debt when I mentioned getting a small loan for mine (not big interest it would have been as I work for the bank) but not only have OH and I managed to pay for everything but I don't understand why she's been lying about the cost of her wedding as on article they say. 20000+ and I know for a fact it cost less than 10000. Is this a pride thing to appear on such a newspaper and pretending your wedding cost loads when it didn't? Now am afraid that when her family comes to mine and OH wedding as ours will appear to cost a lot more they might make sarcastic comments about it thinking we got into debts for it when we haven't. Link on my wall for those of you who want to read it.

I haven't read it even tho I buy it lol

I wouldn't worry about what other people think its your day you both paid for it you haven't got into debt because of it, which is great as weddings cost so much.

Are you both happy with what you have done and how the day will go ahead.
You have nothing to worry about Hun as long as you are both happy that's what matters remember its your day no one else's

I agree with Mrsk2b - leave them to it and dont worry about what they think - if it makes them feel better going on national press and saying that then thats up to them - enjoy your day
But seriously who gets into 12K debt (the second wedding) for a 20k wedding - whats wrong with people

I am 100% happy with what we got, but even OH who knows less about wedding costs starting to say last night that ours will sound like so much more expensive than theirs and his family is very judgemental, the father of that bride, OH's only uncle on his mum's side rsvp NO as he doesn't like me after one little comment from me on Face book last year saying simple "Gary is unsupportive" and his eldest daughter goes out on National Newspaper for something like that. I know it is our day but because all his mum's side is being so judgemental all the time, I am just worried they'll slag me off behind my back, as we got videographer, magician, and extra bit Kelly didn't have, and they know that since I have been in car accident on New Years Day money has been tight, but we still manage to pay off our bills and wedding, and not getting credit cards or loan.

I honestly wouldn't worry about him. You will still have a great day your wedding sound like great fun and I'm sure everyone will be talking about it for a long time but for the right reasons.

I'm sure you don't really want him there at least he RSVP and you know he isn't coming.

Don't worry about anything. Have you spoken to your H2B about how you feel? Are you close to your mil could you speak to her about how you feel?

I am not close at all to MIL2B, I feel that she doesn't like me and from time to time only make effort because of OH. I have spoken a lot to OH, and don't want to bother him no more with my insecurities, as he's got a lot on his mind with his work, and we're close to the wedding so a lot of stress from that as well.
I think I should just relax, but its so tough so close to the wedding now.

I dont understand people doing that - it'd be so much better to say how much I'd saved on a great wedding than boasting about money I've not spent one that wasnt as good as you'd imagine it to be for that money! My friends wedding came in at around £5000 and it's one of the best weddings I've been to, wish I could've done it on that but c'est la vie, cant wait until our day x

ha!! i think YOU are the person who can hold your head high. who on earth would go on a national newspaper to discuss how much their wedding cost AND how much debt you're in?? very UN-classy. fair enough coming on here to talk about finances, as we are pretty anonymous, but it's just not the done thing!! i am a pretty open book about the vast majority of things, but i've been brought up not to discuss money outside the bank or home.

maybe i'm getting people on here mixed up, but aren't h2b's family rather up themselves and have a tendancy to look down their nose at you?? if so, YOU can have the last laugh. i'm still laughing...who would DO something like that?!?! have your face splashed across a paper talking about how little money you have??

yes, she probably WILL make some catty remarks, but you can mention in passing that not everyone discusses their finances in public.

What makes me prouder than anything else is the bargains I have found. not how much things have cost, but how much things havent cost.
I am always so made up when I make a saving and bagged a bargain.
And if I paid full price for anything......these are the things I keep to myself as I am gutted to have had to pay so much.....
How many threads are there on here where we come and tell everyone about a great deal they got? and how pleased we all are for getting that information? LOADS.......

Expensive doesn't equate to nicer, just dearer.

i have just read the article and in all honesty, if that was me, I would be ashamed to admit I had acted so irresponsibly and gotten myself into debt just to 'show off to people'. If you can afford it then go for it as this is then you knowing what you want and working hard for it. Thats what we did, we decided what would be a sensible time to save for without affecting our life quality and thats the money. Not one penny in debt and have the nice big wedding we could dream of. But we worked hard for it and people know we have no debt. Yes a tad silly for spending so much but people know we earned it. Those couples on there just look like divvies and are showing they are living in a fake world and the fact they are going in to debt is only to show off.... it is not to get the wedding they want... just to people please.

And yes I think you are right in that the wedding didnt cost 20k. A divvy can see that it was less by looking at her dress, flowers and his suit haha! Again bigging themselves up to show off and making themselves seem stupid! If it cost 20k fair enough I apologise but I think you are right as it doesnt look 20k so again they are embarrassing themselves. People would respect them more for saying the truth even if the wedding was 1k as then they wouldnt be seen to be showing off as much.... does this make sense I am very tired and falling asleep haha!

I agree completely. To broadcast to the world about how much debt you're in because if your wedding is embarrassing. Now, I'm no financial saint, but to get into that amount of debt for a wedding is not good. I worked in a bank for a few year and felt with people in financial difficulty every day because they didn't live withinh their means. If you can't afford something, don't think you have some god given right to have it. It's the same with weddings. I think some people need to take a step back and look at the big picture

I absolutely agree with you suzky, I am not jealous about people spending lot of money, and if I am more money to spend I might or might not spend it on my wedding, the thing that really nearly offended me, is how SHE kept showing off to me how much they had managed to save and then find out her daddy paid a large part and they borrowed money to do it. Not looking at interest rates for credit cards is very stupid, and I work for a bank, so in doubt she knew she could come to me ask for advice, but the showing off for something that is not true then it's really disappointing. I hate fake people, and organising my wedding as well, I made the count and even her venue Bridlington Golf club would be the most expensive bit but still with wedding menu at £21.95 pp (60/70 people) then at night very little bacon butties at £2 pp, and drinks bucks fizz on arrival and cava for toast, I can't believe it was more than £3000, her dress was less than £1000 their rings not sure two platinum bands, but thats all, she had no activity, only a cheap photographer, so its stupid to lie

and the second couple: "But these days it seems everyone is in debt – it’s just become the norm."

Not in that sence, love! Everyone is in debt who has a mortgage! But that's not a debt like she is on about!

Technically me and OH will be starting married life in debt, but thats to family for helping us pay the deposit on our house. And we can pay that off within a few years, it was a productive borrowing, not for something like one day.

I agree with you on definition of debts, I am gonna get a mortgage in the next 12 months, at the beginning of our married life, but it is to get OUR house, not to pay for our wedding, I am only using my overdraft (repaid every month with very little interest) but that's it, no Credit card, no wedding loan for us. I never had a loan or credit card, and only time I'll borrow money is to get the mortgage. What mostly shocked me is how they still seem PROUD to be on the Sun, what a shame on all of them to think its normal nowadays.

i can understand a tiny bit of debt e.g. my friend has about 1k debt but she didnt go stupid woth her wedding, she knew what she wanted, and they knew they could pay it back easily enough after the wedding.... but people who purposely over indulge on weddings and general lifestyle to show off have no hope. I still cant believe she is lying about the cost of her wedding. Noone cares how much people spend on their wedding, only that the couple love each other and everyone has a goood time.
