Can anyone give me some advice please... I'm getting my wedding dress handmade as couldn't find one I wanted. I booked this and payed a big deposit in March last year, I was there last week for a 'fitting' but just for a rag template of a corset. My dress doesn't seem to be anywhere near made and I'm starting to panic as I get married in 6 months and she has my bridesmaids dresses to make as well. When should this dress be finished? Or will I have to look for an alternative incase it isn't gonna be ready?

Oh no :-( I was hoping I was worrying over nothing but seems my gut feeling is right. It's a local dressmaker, had good reviews and I e been to a wedding with my friend and this lady had made her dress so I wasn't really worried until my 'fitting' last week. I've made an appointment for next week so I'll tell her my concerns as I really thought I'd have a dress to try on by now and start making my bridesmaids dresses! Thank you for your help

i agree, air your concerns but it really doesn't take long for a good seamstress to make a dress once the original shape has been determined and the materials have arrived. My nan wanted 6 weeks to make mine.

She will be making it to fit you perfectly, so I dont think there is any reason to panic just yet hun. I had my prom dress made by a seamstress for me and it took her 2 months to make the whole dress and do all the beading work on it (and she had a full time job) and it fitted perfectly. It is normal in dress making to make a mock up of the dress first, then you will go back and try on the lining of the dress (which will be tacked) and that will be fitted to you, and then she will make the actual outisde of the dress to fit the lining size and do any detail on it. Depending on how much time she spends on it, it would take no longer than maybe 3 months to make, and your bridesmiad dresses will be much simpler to make xxx

It won't take too long for her to make it??
Have you spoken to your friend who had her dress made by the same lady??
    Ask her about time scales??

    Try and relax a little!!

I'm gonna ring her later and ask, I know I'm worrying more than I should just when my mam asked how the fitting went and how the dress was she sounded worried why I haven't seen a start on it lol yeah she's making a 'rag dress' for the fitting and stuff then making the real one. Is it normal to get all these panic moments? Lol

I've had this problem with my dress, being made by a designer but is a 'special order' where they put different bits of different dresses together to make something unique.

I was told 6 months last June. They rang me last September to 'confirm' my order meaning the order wasn't even thought about until that point. In December I enquired as to when it was due in & was told this June! A 6 month delay?! Anyway I complained & now it's supposed to be ready next month, so ill wait & see. It just goes to show though that they can make a dress in a quicker time if they have to.

In retrospect I would have told them my wedding date was 2 months earlier so i didnt have this problem. They don't look at these dresses on a order by order basis but rather, 'ooh I'll wait a bit cos she's not getting married until x date. It's really frustrating for us, but they do this all the time so they know what they're doing even if it adds tons of stress for us xx
