After my best friend got married this year on a low budget and us making her table plan ourselves at half the cost of the quotes she had.
What would be people's views on the potentially crazy idea of handmaking the table plan, invites, thank you cards, save the date cards etc? Is it less stressful to pay a premium and not worry about the wonky lines and handwriting errors. OR would the handmade thing be pulled off? I'm not very arty, I can barely draw a stick man but I would like to hand make all my invites etc..

I can't draw a stick man either, but I can make cards! It's a different skill completely.
I amd out STD cards and I'll be making our thank you cards. My mum made all our invitations. We didn't have a table plan, but it doesn't have to be a complicated design.
Oh, and I made the postcards to go on our wishing tree too. If you find a simple enough design then it shouldn't be too horrible! Hx

I'm terrible at art too - though we are making our table plan, invites and thank you cards. Bit easier with my theme, as its shabby chic/vintage, so if it looks dodge, I'll just say "that's the theme - shabby" lol.

For our table plan, I've got a cream heart-shaped wire memo board,w hich I'll hang luggage tags from with the names on for each table, and decorate with ribbon.

For the invites, I'm just printing them at home and decorating with buttons and things. I've had a go at a first draft (see pic) so I'm just gunna play around with different lace and ribbons. That one took like 10 mins (as you can tell lol) so I don't think it should be too difficult, and its going to cost us about a quarter of what we were quoted for, for the invites we loved.

Have a play about with different ideas and dont make things too complicated for yourself - I'm gathering my BM's for a 'production line' when I come to make all the invites!! x

Lots of people make their own, lots of people buy them in - it's what suits you! If you have lots of guests then I'd wonder about making invites etc as you'd need to start early - and think about your design too as making a 6 fold pocket invitation over 100 times can take a while! We emailed our save the dates to save on postage and making up time, our invites are single fold only and our RSVP is by email so it's just saving time and effort where we can - our thank you cards will be printed photo cards from the day and our table plan should be easy enough to do ourselves. Try making a test one yourself, there are lots of templates about so get some designs and sticky bits from hobby craft and see how you get on!

I also couldn't justify the cost of invites, I've seen ones that are around £3-4 each, but when you multiplied it by our 160 day guests, that would mean £450 on invites alone let alone place names, envelopes, etc. A friend of mine only had 45 guests at her wedding and paid £8 each for diamante boxed invites but she loved them!

    Thanks guys :)
Shad that's lovely, my neighbour rents out vintage crockery, I'm going to suggest she gets on here so she can get more business!
Mrsrowan2be - I know this could sound a bit strange (even if I have put a date on my profile) we haven't actually set a date yet but I'm trying to have alot of it planned and it had crossed my mind to begin the designs now? With regards to the printer I'm sure Father Christmas could send you one early so it doesnt hold up the proceedings?
Am i strange!!! Or is this classed as bridezilla kinda status!!! lol x

I handmake or customise a lot of things in our life so it would be very much out of character if I just buy things for our wedding. And apart from that the budget wouldn't allow it.

It also ofc depends on personal preference. Crafting glue is not my friend, things come off again and I don't like the usual invites with things stuck on them, am also not a fan of cards. (though I do like Shads buttons).
I first decided to have a go at designing a clean template myself and have it printed but now decided to buy a printable template off etsy (£10-13), buy cardstock off the bay and print myself.

But I am handmaking or customising practically everything else. Including dress and bouquet.

I think it's definitely worth handmaking things - I wasn't sure if I was going to at first as I was worried about it distracting me from uni work, but I'm glad I have. If you're concerned about not being very arty then you can always find a design online and just copy it, I did that (the site I used had step-by-step instructions on how to make the cards) and I've had plenty of compliments on them and there's no way they were all perfectly made. I think the slight mistakes and wonkiness just adds a bit of character to it all :D

I've made everything, STDs, invitations, OOS, place names, table numbers, table plan - literally everything that I could stationary wise! I'm not particularly arty myself, but found them really quite easy - and it meant that I could use one theme and colour scheme throughout. In total it has cost less than £150 for absolutely everything - not bad when our vicar was telling us just the other evening that one wedding he officiated had OOS that cost £700 for 150 to be done professionally - and that these professional OOS were all put together upside down or in the wrong order!

£700 for something I could knock up on the pc in 5mins!? WTH
and its cost you £150 for the lot, how many ppl have u got invited n such like? I suppose the benefit also to making your own is that you can ensure the whole colour scheme matches.
I have so many ideas floating in my head, I just wish we had a proper date set so I could get on with it proper!!

i'm gonna make all of mine... theres loads of arts and crafts places that do cheap card making kits and sell all the bits and bobs separately. maybe market stalls might even have some bits cheap? I think handmade is a lovely idea, so much more personal and can even give your guests a hint as to the day's theme and colours! x

I'm making magnets for my save the dates. The magnets cost 34p each and the printing will cost £2.50 for all 35. I've used a photo and added text on a photo editing program. x

I found my invitations online. They were exactly what I wanted, and I ordered a sample (the pricelist came with the sample). I was completed shocked to find that the invitations would cost £8 EACH!!! I still love them though... Ivory pearlescent pocketfold fastened with a vintage brooch...

I searched online and found the pocketfolds, but couldn't find a similar brooch... but after a few days I managed to find it! I can make the invitations myself for around £2.50 each. We only need about 30-40 of them, and for evening invitations I'm just going to have a postcard style invitation.

I've even enlisted the help of my friend and bridesmaid to help me with the invitations and favours..

I would definitely go down Hand-made Road. This is where you can save enormous amounts of money. Even the professionally made invitations are often quite simple to actually make if you look carefully at them. At the end of the day, very few people will actually peer at their invitation / thank you card and evaluate how well made they are. And even if they do...who cares? It won't make any difference to people's enjoyment of the day, or your married life :)

It's so much more personal when you go down the handmade road! I'm making everything myself - although h2b looked at me like I'd lost the plot when I produced a sketch book, handmade paper and glue last night. Made our customised guest book and if I say so muself it looks FAB. So pleased with it. It took me blo.ody hours to stick all the little gems down the spine, but well worth it :D. Xx

I think if you have the time and some good ideas why not. It doeesn't have to be too comlpicated have a go. Once you get the design you like see how long it takes you. That way you'll have a better idea of what needs doing and when to start by so to speak.

Also I think it's nice to have personal touches and you can't get more personal than hand-made. :)
