I've seen a few people mention it in other posts and wondered how everyone feels about haggling and what you've all managed to haggle I.e. Discounts, freebies etc.
I've only ever haggled on holiday for things like handbags but definitely don't see the harm in trying! As a friend of mine always says...shy girls don't get anything!

I'm really nervous about trying to haggle... any tips on what to ask/say would be great. I'm viewing my dream venue in September so I have plenty of time to practice lol xx

Firstly girls if you don't ask you don't get :) ... Secondly I would practice a bit sounds silly but they are more likely to give a discount to some one who sounds confident. For example with venue you could ask if they would be willing to give everyone a free welcome drink (if it doesn't already have on in package) xx

I've not had any luck haggling so far.

When I bought my dress (for a whopping £1300)
I asked if they would let me have a discount if I bought a veil and hair pieces too and they said no.

Their cheapest veil is £120 so when she asked me at the till if I wanted to buy the one I'd tried with the dress I said only if you discount it. Again no.
So I said that I wasn't prepared to buy anything else from them.

If it wasn't for the dress being the one, I was tempted to walk away.

I'd be happy to bring one of you successful hagglers along to some shops. I've never had a successful haggle in my life.

My OH is great with haggling and I've learned from him as best as I can. So far we managed to save £600 on venue as they were wanting to charge us for 100 guests (total for evening) but we banged on about how for the ceremony and meal there will only be 60 therefore the majority of the day will be taken up by that number. In the end they relented and gave us the discount :-D

My wedding dress was reduced from 1k to 500 and as it was a sample and it was held in the back to go to that place where unwanted dresses go I said "ok, because it need a bit of work to freshen it up how much will you take off of it? And they took another £250 off.

Seriously if you don't ask you don't get. Remember the weeding industry makes a HUGE profit off the backs of Brides and Grooms just paying the displayed price so they do have wiggle room if you're willing to push it.

I'm not confident enough to haggle! We did get 2014 prices on flowers before we are friendly with them though so matched OHs brothers wedding prices. The only other thing is we got use of a bigger room for our reception because our wedding is out of season, even though they tried to charge us an extra grand and a half first! We went away to think about it as it would be an extra 20 heads, and went a back a few days later and said no,then she rang the manager and said they would give us it anyway.

Thats what they do, they try to offer you things that you may not necessarily need to get more money, when they can do it for half the price or free. If you ask for something and they seem unwilling to budge example like above a welcome drink for your guests for free, say ok with the amount of money we will be spending with you we will have to think about if this is actually the right venue if they think they are going to loose your custom they'll start bending over backwards for you... Where I had my reception I didn't really get on with the wedding co-ordinator because she didn't seem to care about what I wanted. They day before my wedding I had a massive go at her telling her its my day not hers. Came into the room on our wedding day she had gone and brought centre pieces (purple flowers on mirrored centres) because I wasnt going to have them lol x

my OH and I never appeared blazsay but we just never said "This is THE ONE" in front of any suppliers. We always said "we love it an would be perfect but we need to crunch numbers and we have a few other venues/suppliers/etc to see" Then we would wait a week or so, visit again.

Sounds like some of you have done brilliant! I'll definitely be giving it ago (just been testing my skills in Turkey!) If that's taught me anything it's definitely to act like you're not that bothered about something and that you can just get it anywhere else then they feel more like they need you than you need them.
I'm hoping to sort something out with venue, we've seen online where we'd like and what packages they do but want to tweak the packages a bit i.e. less heads during the day but something extra to make it up for it or money off.

It's weird I am normally quite good at getting extras or a bit off but for the wedding it's like my brain switches off and so far zero stuff off :(

I've got a plan, the venue we like has a set all inclusive package at £3995 plus £500 to upgrade to a Saturday. They have an offer on if you book the package you can get £500 worth of extras i.e. extra menu choice, more items on the buffet so I'm thinking of asking if instead of having the £500 worth of extras can we wave the £500 Saturday fee as we're not interested in the extras they offer and don't think i'ts much to ask really as technically we just want to spend the £500 they offer us in a different way xx

Thank you but my plan may not be needed now, we've seen some really awful reviews of the venue and have been really put off! Not just your average bad reviews, numerous couples stating a member of staff stole presents and money from their wedding, and when reported to the police they've said this has been reported on 7 different occasions already this year!! Don't ant to risk anything like that happening :( xx
