Went to the cake maker today for a taster we had booked in

We have tried her samples at wedding fayres before but wanted to double check before booking

    So, I took mum today
First of all she was not there, her husband just looked at me when I said I had booked to come today (she did not give a time, said to just pop down, we went around 10.45)

So he disappears out the back and rummages through papers then can hear him on the phone, 2 mins later, she comes flying through the door with some bags in her hand and runs straight out the back..............

At this point I am saying to my mum how bad the customer service is

She then comes out & asks which cake it was we liked? Seriously, I have always made it clear, seen her twice & only looked at 1 cake which she has on display as a dummy model!

She handed us the samples (must admit she has given HUGE slabs of cake) chocolate cake, extra light spone & creme satin sponge

We went off and grabbed a cuppa and tried the cake

The extra light sponge was just that, as light as air and no real taste to it at all
The creme satin was fine, nice cake & this is what we would have but made into a lemon cake
Then the chocloate cake (which was the plan for our other tier) BLEURGH!!!! It was light but it did not taste of chocolate, it didnt really taste of much

Im so disappointed as I thought this was the cake in the bag as such, even had the deposit in my bag to book her there and then

Now I'm back to square one :-(

How did you all go about finidng your cake maker?

This lady and one or two others (who's samples were hideous) tend to frequent the wedding fayre scene so thats a no go

It doesn't help that I make cupcakes & have high standards i guess, plus the fact I don't see the point in spending hundreds on a cake that will end up eaten

    HELP!!!!

What about looking at your local village fetes, or charity events. The lady doing my afternoon tea is often booked for this type of thing. i actually found her just browsing the web.

The service you got is completely different to what I received, the lady I've booked chatted for a while on the phone, then came in to meet me and brought a whole cake. We chatted about the different options and she's even going to provide for the Vegan that's attending the wedding. Everything about her is perfect. If your lady can't get her samples to taste good, then you've no hope for the final cake. Definitely look elsewhere.

I used the internet looked at there website if they had great pics then i would ring up asking for a rough quote then go and try the cakes and see more photos. I was lucky in this search as the first one that i liked the photos of cake test was amazing so booked her straight away

It really is a shame as I thought I had found her so easily but I have been really put off on all contact with her as she is just not professional or does not provide decent customer service.
She was also trying to get me to order a bigger cake than what we needed (only having 50 day guests so H2B, I & mum all feel a 2 tier of 16" & 12" is plenty big enough)

I also have a vegan guest and wanted a little something made for her but when i asked this cake maker, she just told me NO!
She also dictated the flavours to us & when I asked for lemon she said again no not really as they make the 3 different types, plus fruit but she did suggest drizzling the creme satin with lemon juice and adding a lemon curd. That suits me fine but I just don't like her
plus todays tasters were a let down.
Even my 7yr old didnt finish the chocolate cake!!!

We had problems with cake too, first person we wanted to book said she was fully booked with birthday cakes 15 months in advance, we think she backed out as we are not having a 'normal iced weddingcake' see album. 2nd lady then changed her quote to £124 more then what she orginally told us.

Finally got it booked 4 tier for £425 which is what everyone else was quoting us for 3 tier.

I just emailed a load of people with a pic of what we wanted for a quote then met up with them if we liked them.

I am a BIGGGG fan of choccywoccydoodah and was going to have one until I came to senses about price. Plus dress was more then I bargained for so dad told me it was a CWDD cake or the dress, went with the dres obv lol.

Elle23 I know a lady who does FANTASTIC cakes! Shes made a few for me now and all have tasted and looked amazing!

One problem tho she has kinda "lost the love" for cake making after spliting with her ex so doesnt really do them that much anymore :-(

BUT now she is in a new relationship shes finding the love again so she MIGHT be up for making you one if you ask VERY VERY nicely (no harm in asking) I'll post her details on your wall in a check!

Failing that how about you and the kids making a cupcake tower instead and then getting a cake from m and s for the top and decorate it yourself...........makes it a bit more personal just depends if you have the time?

We tasted loads of cakes at a wedding fair, most were ok, one set were actually unpleasant and one set were amazing. They were really tasty - actually worth eating as cake unlike so many wedding cakes! I asked for a rough price of one of the example cakes and they seemed a bit cheaper than anyone else in the area too. Hoping to try more samples at another wedding fair and then see about a proper quote.
You have plenty of time, so keep looking and make sure you are happy with it.
