I was a bit worried about h2b finding a ring for the wedding....He never wars jewellery and isn't really interested.
Anyway, whilst clearing out his grans bungalow, his parents found his grandads wedding ring and his gran had said that she'd like h2b to have it for his wedding ring, which we are both made up about, in fact we were absolutely thrilled as it will mean a lot to h2b and means his grandad will be part of the day too.
At the minute it's slightly too large, will resizing be a problem, do you think?
Also, it's gold, whereas my engagement ring is silver so I had planned on a silver wedding ring. However, I was planning on wearing my e ring on the other hand as its quite big.
Should I have a gold ring to match my husband? Or a silver ring to match my e ring? Obviously, it is much more important to use his grandads ring than have it matching my ring, I was just wondering what you ladies thought about the two options above.

You don't need to have the rings matching, I would get it to match your ering. Me and h2b are having different metals. What a lovely gesture x x

If it is gold they should have no problem resizing it for you, not matter how old it is :)
And it is up to you about your ring. What is more important to you? Would it mean more to you to have your wedding band and engagement ring the same, or to have the two wedding bands the same? xxx

Resizing should not be a problem, and if you are not wearing you e ring on the same finger you can go gold, or you could do a mix of white and yellow gold.

Resizing should be fine. You can have whatever ring you want. A lot of brides and grooms have different metals for their rings, I don't think it would look weird xxx

If its thick metal, why not have it melted down and made into two rings? :-) xxx

When me & my husband went ring shopping we didnt plan to have matching.. infact i chose my wedding ring while in town with my friend & when my husband joined me picked the same ring, but it wasnt planned, it just liked it as much as i did :)

Be careful who you go to to get it resized. When my e ring was resized they used heat to make the ring smaller and did a beautiful job. A lot of jewellers will just cut the ring to resize it and it will always be weak and liable to snap at that point.
Me and h2b have different metals. I really don't think it matters xx

We also have different metals. H2b is having titanium where as I've gone with the white gold to match my e.ring. it doesn't matter completely Dow to personal preference. Lovely touch to have grandads old ring :) my mum n dad are divorced and mum gave me her old engagement ring for my 16th. That needed resizing and you would never know it's been done! X

Ah thats lovely that you have found that and that, Re sizing shouldnt be a problem as already said and I think with regards to have silver or gold it personal choice.
Alot of people dont have matching wedding bands any more and I dont think me and h2b will be having the same as I cant wear gold but he doesnt like silver, white gold etc and he possibly wont wear a ring any way xx

As everyone has been saying resizing should not be a problem as gold is a fantastic metal to work with and can be reworked 100's of times without any problems. If it isn't much too big you can have the size reduced by heating and compressing the ring (as Tori said) - thus avoiding having to cut a piece out.
As for both having the same colour ring - its down to personal choice but most couples don't go for matching rings these days.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I would like to add a word of caution about melting it down.
Many people think that its easy to melt a ring down and remake it but the reality is not quite as easy or straightforward. Unfortunately some people in the jewellery trade give the impression that they'll melt your ring and use that metal to produce a new ring.
I'm sorry to say that most time what actually happens is that the precious heirloom you give them is thrown into the scrap and they simply give you a new ring. This is a disgraceful practice but it happens all the time.
The reason for this is that none of the high street chain jewellers make rings in their own workshops - they simply buy them in wholesale. The other reason is that melting small quantities of gold and refashioning it can cause problems because tiny air bubbles get into the gold while it is melted and this weakens the resulting ring.
For that reason, although we have the facilities for melting and remaking gold, we always recomend that customers avoid this process.

Sorry to Hi-jack your post but wanted to ask Smooch person a question..
Smooch - I bought my h2b's ring with a company aprox a year or more ago, It is titanium with silver inlay and diamonds (not real diamonds as far as im aware) However it has been sat in its box in our safe since buying it, I got it out a few weeks ago to show a friend and upon looking at the ring i have noticed that the silver area of the ring where it slots into the box is off colour and tarnished looking, why has this happened and also is there a way i can remove these marks or will i have to get a new ring? x

Hi Claire88, The tarnishing you mention is completely normal. Silver will tarnish if its left in a box or a drawer. In fact it will tarnish anywhere unless it is being polished - but the polishing would happen naturally if you were wearing it.
Cleaning is very simple:
1 Cover a bowl or plate with aluminum foil, silver side up.
2 Add hot water, 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of salt to the bowl and mix it until the powder dissolves.
3 Place the tarnished silver ring in liquid for at least 10 minutes.
4 Rinse the ring and then polish it dry with a soft cloth to reveal the shine
The Titanium will not be damaged at all by this process and will also come up cleaner

Wow what a great tip. Whats the best way to clean gold?

Thanks guys. I think I will definately go for silver, as it suits my colouring better and I tend to wear silver if I do wear jewellery.
Also, h2b has a watch that his sister gave him for his 21st (he's 44 now!) that he wears all the time which is gold, so he'd maybe not have been comfortable with a silver ring.
I can't tell you how made up he is to have his grandads ring. He's quite a sentimental bloke and it means so much for him that his grandad who he was close to will be partof the big day xx
