So i took H2B to his 1st Wedding Fair today and think it went to head a little bit. He has decided that he would love love actual fish in bowls as our centerpieces (an idea I'm sure he has got from don't tell the bride) It's so nice for him to have an input and I could always find fish that match the colour scheme. What do people think??? Is it doable??? xx

What are you going to do with the fish after the wedding? Also wbat if one died or a bowl got accidentally knocked over, might put a downer on things. I think it would look beautiful but its risky x

I agree with katg alittle risky. You could give them to certain people as presents (or keep them) and get them taken off the table before the party gets too wild. Otherwise I think it would look super effective and be very unique. I actually love the idea! What is you colour theme by the way?

Please don't. Its very stressful for fish to be moved and in this case they'd need to be moved twice (from pet shop to home then from home to venue as i doubt you'd have time to buy them on the day) its very likely that some would die from it. Also you cant just put them in any old water, it needs to be the right PH balance etc and that takes time to get right, you shouldn't ever put fish (even plain old goldfish) into straight water. I do understand the idea behind it and it would in theory look lovely, but in reality it would be quite difficult to organize and could be bad for the fish

Well i was thinking of scattering roses petals either side with a few tea light in amongst the petals. Our colour theme is cream and dark purple. We have thought about giving them as presents to our page boys and a few relatives. Plus we wanted to keep some as a momentum from the wedding x

I wouldnt think it would be fair on the fish - what if someone put something into the bowls, even by accident or like the others said they got knocked over
I'd do the fish bowls without the fish!

I agree with Nicsquared, i dont think it would be fair on the fish at all :(, you can make the actual bowls look beautiful without the fish....it would also be a bit cringy while the guests were eating their meals and the fish decide to do a poop ....looks horrible with the string of poo hanging out of them ...yuk...sorry

imo that would look lovely but very risky and like others have pointed out the stress may cause the fish to die which could end up upsetting any kiddies :( maybe theres an alternative out there xx

I agree that this may not be good for the fish, horrible if any die or poop too.

H2B likes the idea of the bowls with candles floating in it with flower heads in the colour scheme too xx

i think actual fish in fishbowls is really cool. you can get stones in almost every colour and add coloured decor inside the bowl too (safe fishy ones)

the only issue i can think of just now is the risk of guests dropping stuff into it by accident/on purpose. also, who would have the fish after the wedding??

I would check this with your venue as my venue doesnt allow this - they contacted rspca when another bride asked and they said no!
Also, if I went to a wedding and my daughter was given a fish as a present I would be raging - what the hell would I do with a fish?!lol
You ould look into fake fish or something?x

I think that woud be a real shame on the fish! Really don't think this is a good idea. Plus you just can't put any old fish in a bowl. Most fish need filters and air pumps etc etc. then you have all the tiddly and drunk guest that think it's funny to pour their drinks into the bowls?? Nope not a good idea xx

My friend wanted this a few years ago, but when she looked into it she found out how incredibly unfair it is on the fish. They will find it stressful being moved and with the lights/noise from the disco. No matter how sensible people are most of the time, you always get the one that turned into a complete idiot when drunk and thinks it's a good idea to add things to the bowl. Some pet store won't sell you the fish if they no it's for a wedding.

I have fish and I am scared at the idea of people using them as decoration at a wedding! They get stressed so easily. We lost a few when we moved house as they got stressed and we were so so so careful to preserve their water and move them gently but quickly :-(

Have to say I'm sorry but as much as it's nice that h2b has an opinion, I think it's a total no-goer!

Have a nose about online for other ideas, I bet there are loads that will look fab for you :-)

No, it isn't fair on the fish. As everyone else has said, they get stressed and it's so easy for someone to knock the bowl over or get drunk and spill drinks into the bowl. Then where would the fish go after the wedding? Fish are animals, not toys.
You can still use fishbowls for the centrepieces though, there's loads you can do with fishbowls. Do a google search of fishbowl centrepieces? xxx

I saw that episode of DTTB where the guy had the goldfish and my honest opinion is that apart from it looking a bit tacky it was really cruel on the fish. They do get stressed easily and I would imagine you'd probably end up with a couple floating on their sides. You'll probably also find that a pet shop won't just sell you fish, you have to provide proof that you have the correct tank and care products. I know this because a friend of mine went to Pets at Home and they wouldn't sell her the fish because she'd gone in on a whim.

    I can't wait until 29/06/2013

Personally I used to agree with the majority but my best friend, (who studies marine biology) and is extremly animal and eco friendly told me she wanted to do this if she got married, I was so shocked but she explained it in a way that seemed ok. Firstly she said that she would buy a large tank for the fish and take it the venue a couple of days before the wedding with all the fish in it, filters etc all there, then the day before take a little of the water from the tank and put it into the little bowls and then fill the rest up with filitered water, allowing the temp to regualte and check the ph. then on the day of the wedding move the fish into their little houses for the day.
Her argument about people knocking them over was that people don't really knock over centerpieces because they are in the middle of the table, normal centrepieces have candles etc and you very rarely if ever, hear of a wedding that somebody knocked the centrepiece over and lit the place on fire!
If you're worried about people dropping things in (which is highly unlikely) put something like a little bit of gauze or get little tanks that come with a lid.
She also said that she would sincerly hope that she knew her 'friends' well enough to know if she thought any of them would be disgusting enough to hurt or do something to demaning to the fish, firstly they prob wouldn't be her friend and would certainly not be invited.
After the wedding she wants to keep the fish, in thier big fish tank, in thier marital home, as pets :)

I do think this is a very striking centerpiece, but as people have mentioned we are talking about real living creatures, and I do think you can do it in a way that is not too traumatic on the fish, afterall in the wild they live in rivers and ponds so they are hardy little animals, but please please consider how much work it will take to do this the 'right' way :)

Fish are so delicate, they don't look it I know, but even if you do as Roxy has said her friend explained it is still pretty stressful for the fish. I know they can look amazing but I really don't think it is fair on them and also you won't be able to find fish that match your scheme that will survive without special lights and heaters etc.
Why not try floating candles in fish bowls with coloured stones and the rose petals around the outside? I've seen these at our venue and they look really effective, also you could vary the containers so you could have some tall and some low to add a bit of drama? You could even suspend flowers in the water so they float underneath the candles, I think this looks amazing!
