    Hi

I had a hair trial last week, ics in my album, but i was a bit disappointed. I want to wear my hair down (H2B likes it like this and I normally wear it tied up) but not too different so I still look like me! I had in my head down and curly (my hair is naturally slightly curly but I always straighten it) so this is what the hair dresser did, but it looked daft because my hair is a bit too short and the curls just bounced above my shoulders. So the hairdresser pinned it up at the back, which looked really nice from the back but it looked exactly the same as it does in when I tie it up in a ponytail from the front, not what I want at all.

Anyway the hairdresser said I should grow it so that I can have it down and curly like I want, she suggested not cutting it at all until the wedding apart from maybe cutting off the very ends at xmas and again just before the wedding. I'm more than happy ot do this but my hair is quite fine and one it gets past my shoulders it ends up looking really fine at the ends and a bit straggly and seems to stop getting any longer?!.

Does anyone have any tips for growing it and keeping it looking healthy and keeping it growing, I'd love it if it got to half way down my back!

    Z x

You could maybe put in a hairpiece, one of the clip in ones as well as grow it to thicken it out on the day? I'm using one so I can have long curls as I've got a graduated bob at the moment. They look really effective if you're hairdresser is confident to use them x

You should cut ur hair every 6 weeks (just the ends) coz I'll be getting rid of the dry ends which encourages ur hair to grow. My hairdresser tells me ur hair grows the most after a haircut. Xx

Im planning on getting my hair trimmed soon, Unlike you i have really thick hair, my hair already is half way down my back, and i dont like it this long but with wanting loose curls and pinned out of my face, i need to grin and bare it. I agree that a hairpiece will make your hair look fuller. And if you shop around you'll be about to pick up for cheap. If not look into getting extensions.

Yes I think when it gets to your shoulders you should have a trim around the ends only, I too have heard this wakes up the hair shaft to keep growing as the dry bit is cut off!

I know everyone's full of advice and I'm by no means an expert, but my hairdresser had said to get it cut every 8 weeks instead of the normal 6 otherwise you'd just be cutting off the extra that's grown in the 6 weeks x

I am pretty sure it's a hairdressers myth about doing anything involving a cut to help grow your hair. What you do to the ends of the hair will have no effect on how fast it grows. As someone else said, if you have it cut too often it will never grow because you'll just cut off the same length as you managed to grow.

When I wanted to grow my hair (and I did struggle because it would get straggly much beyond my shoulders too), I just avoided going to the hairdressers at all for months, and ignored it, and now it's the longest it's ever been. Yes it looks straggly at the ends, but you've just got to bear with it, and ignore it. Tie it back if it looks bad (but not tightly, as that will cause breakage - make sure to use really soft scrunchies).

I've just looked up on the internet - How to encourage hair to grow and this is what came up!!
Use a quality brush to keep your hair brushed, such as a boar bristle brush.
Tilt your head forward and brush with your head upside down to bring the oils to the ends of your hair and stimulate the scalp.
Keep your hair well moisturized. You don't need to use commercial product but you do need to know what you can use to condition your hair properly if you resort to natural items.
Don't wash your hair every day; allow the hair oils to condition your hair rather than constantly washing the oils out.
Massage your scalp while washing your hair. Massaging your scalp can help your hair grow faster and longer as it increases the blood flow in your scalp.
Warmer weather is said to stimulate hair growth to so make the most of the nice weather we are having and relax in the garden

    Good luck hun xx

Ive always thought that hairdressers telling you to get your hair cut every 6 weeks is a very clever sales technique...they tell you it'll grow quicker, you pay them £40 to cut 1cm off. See what I mean?

I found that eating the right foods, lots of milk and calcium really helps. Also, get some evening primrose oil capsules...they work wonders for hair, skin and nails!

zoe, i had my hair at that length for years and cos i was having it trimmed regularly it never grew. i then left it 6 months without cutting it. drove me insane cos of the thickness of my hair. but now it hits my bum nearly and is perfect. i used herbal essences hello hydration when growing it as it kept the hair in good condition to grow. but once it hit middle of my back i switched to the beautiful ends one and it means i can keep it healthy and long. i would also recommend using schwarzkopf Gliss. It's a leave in serum that conditions ur hair after washing, or even when dry using liquid keratin (good for ur hair). keeps it tangle free and its cheap. costs £1.99 in a Sa ver s store. costs more in places like Super drug.

Hope this helps. the points about brushing hair upside down help, and so does not washing hair every day. i do mine every 2-3 days as it allows the oils to soak into the hair and prevent damage from brushing and straightening too.

I recently after getting my hair to a length that i liked had to loose about 3 inches off it cos it was completely dead, was about 7 months since went to a hair dresser wasnt a priority. So now mine also is to short for how i want to wear it on the day. Will be keeping up the hair cuts and really hoping i manage to grow at least some length back to it, currently shoulder length

I am also growing my hair for my wedding, as the min it is to my b00bs, which is longer than I have had it in a long while but it's not long enough for the style I want (loose waves) so I'm growing mine, and although mine is super duper thick I think I might invest in some clip in exstensions closer to the time. not only will they give me extra volume and length but they will hold the style in longer as in if the waves fall out of my hair they will hold in the exstensions so it will still look ok at the end of the night :)

The best way to grow your hair is to have the ends trimmed every 4-6 weeks. I started growing my hair at Christmas, it was a very short crop, I couldn't even get it in a pony tail, now its the middle of my back. I wash it every other day and I try not to use too much heat on it, I try to just blow dry or straighten it, not both and once a week I use a hair mask. x

i'm doing exactly the same thing as I want my hair half up, half down and curly. mine is currently WAY past my shoulders, and its the longest I've had it in about 10 years! I have the ends trimmed every 6-8 weeks or so and make sure I condition it every time I wash, but you've got to make sure you get it right to the ends. Mine is looking thin at the bottom now as I've got loads of layers and thats the thinnest bit. Cant wait to get it all chopped off again afterwards!!!!

Hi there, i had the same h2b prefers it down and first trial was too short when curled. My hairdresser recommend a product i mentioned on another post available from a large chemist, its for hair that doesn't grow beyond a certain length. Me and my mom have been using it and really impressed with results. All the tips above are good too but found this really gave it a boost. Its rightr down to my chest now and was great when i had another trial last week even curled was a lovely length when pinned up slightly.

Give me a shout and can post link on your wall if that helps.

ah been looking for this kind of advice. i do the non washing of hair every weekend and have done so for past 6 years since it was braided and the condition has never been better, but i need it long to get it pinned up and my hair is thin (due to a thyroid condition) and falls out a lot and is also very very oily......

i got my hair cut im may and its still the same length, ok i have til november and im looking into extensions if it doesnt grow enough in time. im wondering if it can still be pinned up if they were in?????

Yes, your hair can be pinned up when you have extensions in. A good stylist will make sure you have no clips, glue, showing.
If you regularly trim your hair, condition it and just treat it with a bit of love it will grow x

i have an underactive thyroid aswell and my hair falls out a lot!! but luckily my hair is quite thick so it hasnt made much of a change looks wise although it looks a bit thin around the front of my parting. i also want my hair in loose curls and its currently halfway down my back (my hair has always grown quite quickly) but i think it depends aswell on what is used 2 curl ur hair. at my sisters wedding we had our hair curled using a curling tong and my hair sprang right up above my shoulders, it looked horrile as it is thick it looked like a big curly wig! lol it did start 2 drop out quite quickly though and actually looked better from then on, but i would get them 2 use a curling wand or rollers and maybe make sure the size of the curl isnt too big to take up so much of the hair x

I'll see how it goes and will get the ends trimmed only when I absolutely have to.

i think trims do help to make your hair grow. ive been trying to grow my hair for ages. hadnt had my hair cut in 7 months but thought 2 weeks ago i need a trim but when i got the hairdressers because i hadnt had it cut in so long it was in bad condition so had to have a lot off.since then it has grown loads. i didnt understand how cuts make your hair grow but it does! i colour my hair adn 2 weeks ago i had no roots showing and now i have quite a bit!

try not to straighten your hair much. once or twice a week and when you do use head defense. even use that if you use a hair dryer as it will protect your hair x

my hair dresser is one of the best in cheshire and I spoke to him about this as I also have been told to keep growing my hair (even though it is already half way down my back) for the same reason as you in that I want soft curls as going for half up and half down. He said it needs trimming every 6-8 weeks to encourage it to grow (properly) and that to stop fine hair growing stragly he advises you to drink lots of smoothies and take vitamin tablets. Do NOT drink green tea or anything else which he said some brides do to lose weight before the big day as it strips the body of key nutrients that the hair needs. He also said to make sure it is fully conditioned and maybe treat it with a deep conditioning mask once a week x

I am not growing my hair as i have alays had long hair but thought i might share a few of my tips for keeping my hair healthy.

For those worrying about ends getting straggly, there is something you can buy to try keep your hair free of split ends. It's called hot oil treatment... I use them a week or so after dyeing my hair as it keeps the ends really soft and shiny. They only cost about a pound too, I think it's Alberto vo5 that I use and they come in packs of three, I do mine every two weeks or so.

Also use a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week :) Like Melody said, bleaching your hair doesn't do it any good either, since I went brunette my hair is a million times healthier!

I take supplements for hair skin and nails... Usually vitamins made for women have the right things in anyway!

If you straighten your hair quite a lot then I would try and cut down on that... There are special brushes you can get that you can
use with a hairdryer to straighten your hair and also special blowdrying techniques to beat frizz etc. I am really naughty and blow dry my hair pretty much every time I shower, but I have used straighteners about four times in my entire life so I think I can get away with it haha!

I know this sounds gross but when it comes to washing hair the more you can leave it then the better your hair gets at not being greasy. I only wash my hair once maybe twice a week now as I find it hard to do on my own but my hair has now adapted to it not being washed every day. The longer you leave it between washes the less grease is produced as you body gets used to it not being stripped away all the time and before you know it you can leave it longer between washes.

Also because I don't style my hair so much now and leave it to dry on its own it stays in very good condition. If you swim wear a swimming hat as the chlorine doesn't do it any good.

My hair has grown from above the shoulders to boob level in the past two years but it is pretty slow growing so just keep it in mind that some hair grows quicker than others but if all else fails you can get some great hair clip ins these days.
