hello, was just wondering if any of you have or are planning on growing your own wedding flowers? I really want sweet peas as my centre pieces and thought I may try growing them myself with the help of families too :)

Sweet peas are tend to bloom late spring - early summer. They also like full sun and/or warm weather. With the British weather being what it is it may be very hard to insure you have sweet peas blooming for your wedding (unless you have a really green thumb and/or a greenhouse).

I remember a man in our village borrowing neighbours gardens to grow hundreds of sweet peas for his daughters wedding. He managed it :) My Dad is doing our flowers, and is cursing me for choosing a December wedding! Oops. I have no idea what he is doing, he wont tell anyone, even my Mum has been banned from the greenhouse.

oh thats lovley that your dad is doing that! theres a local car boot that I often buy fresh flowers from and was thinking of asking the man if he would grow some for me (for a fee). I just done want anything fussy and structured, and the price of florists is extortionate x

It sounds a lovely idea! I do not have a green finger at all so wouldn't be able to do this!

My granddad has his own allotment and I was going to ask him to grow my flowers but with the British weather forever being unpredictable there is always a risk that the flowers either won't be ready and blooming in time or have died. It's a lovely idea but all I can recommend is plan on having flowers in season to your wedding and if you're unsure what conditions they need either ask a gardener or search it on the internet. Good luck!

    Hi Mrs Hill,
I want lots of lavender at my wedding and was thinking about buying some young plants now so they will be ready for next year...... but i'm not sure..... i'm not very green fingered........ the only one of my plants still alive and flowered this year was a clematis who has hung on for dear life for the past three years despite every other plant I have biting the dust :p
If you are a keen gardener then why not give it a go....... even if you only grow some of what you want.
You can always have a fall back plan.
