We have just started looking at Wedding Cakes and would like a 3-tiered cake. We don't like fruit cake but know other guests at our wedding might like it. I think we may end up with one layer fruit, one layer sponge and one layer chocolate but I'm not sure about the order as I don't want to end up with too much wastage but also don't want to run out of one particular layer. If you were a guest at a wedding and had the option of fruit, sponge or chocolate cake, which would you go for?
Would do this as a poll but not sure how to do it!! x

I would have either sponge or fruit, I don't like chocolate cake but I know most people would like it. I think it's best to have one of each flavour. You shouldn't run out as they serve small portions so cakes cater for a lot of people. You would have to have fruit cake as the bottom tier as it's heavier than sponge so can't sit on top if it. XxX

    we are having

    3rd tier - carrot
2nd tier - sponge with lemon filling
    1st layer - chocolate

we hate fruit cake so though it would be silly doing a layer of it as we will probably end up with it at home anyway

We're having one of each. If we go for a 3 tier, we'll be having fruit as the top tier (as only a handful of our guests like fruit cake), chocolate as the middle tier, and then vanilla sponge as the bottom tier.

We're considering four tiers, in which case we'd have (in ascending order): vanilla; chocolate; lemon; fruit.

That way, everyone is catered to :-)

Im having a 6layer rainbow cake(see albums) which will just be plain sponge. Then Cupcakes whici will be plain sponge but with different flavour toppings.

Fruit usually goes at the bottom of tiered cakes because of the weight of it BUT if you dont think maybe people would eat it why not ask you cake decorator to do a small kitchen cutting cake of fruit then have your 3 tiers of the sponges you want :)

Fruit cake keeps much longer but has to be made in advance. I like fruit cake and like that it's traditional but know so few peoploe, especially of my generation, that like it. Can you not have one of each? I'm having a 3 tier fruit, with top tier being made gluten, wheat, dairy and nut-free and then a separate sponge single tier to match! (My Dad's making them so I get to have whatever I want!!). x

were having 4 tiers of fruit, chocolate, plain sponge and lemon sponge. the fruit and lemon sponge will be the cutting cakes and the other 2 plus 2 dummy tiers will make up our cake.

id go with the chocolate, majority of folk will prefer it to the fruit.

we where worried about that but when we met our cake maker she suggested having another cake on the side. we thought that would be expensive but she told us she only charges £12 for another smaller cake that feeds 36 people and will be decorated the same as the big cake. so we're having the main cake sponge, toffee and carrot and the little one will be fruit. x

Mine was three tier chocolate :D The husband and I can't stand fruit cake and we thought sponge was a bit boring (also, it was what my sister had and we were trying to make our wedding as different from hers as possible)

Just a bit of advice- if you're having a red velvet cake and you have vegetarian guests PLEASE check with your baker that it's vegetarian. Some manufacturers use carmine or conchineal as the red food colouring, which is not veggie friendly. Also I don't think anyone, carnivore or veggie, that would want that ingredient in their food (it's crushed bugs)

    Thanks for all your suggestions.

I like the sound of some of the more unusual flavours: the chocolate and orange sounds good Lala - I look forward to hearing what that one is like soon and the Red Velvet seems like a popular choice.

I also like the idea of having a smaller fruit cake on the side for those that want some. This is a definate possibility for us if we have a cake without dowels for support.

    We're having 4 tiers.

    Bottom tier - lemon
next tier up - chocolate (although my sister and best mate are trying to convince me to switch the lemon and chocolate lol)
    next tier up - vanilla
top tier - fruit cake (we're not cutting this as I want to keep it for our first child's Christening)

Therefore I'd say go for all 3 - fruit, sponge and chocolate ;)

We had a 3 tier chocolate cake. The venue chopped the bottom tier up, and I don't even think it all got eaten to be honest. So they threw it away I think!

So we ended up with 2 tiers back home with us. We took the top tier on honeymoon with us which is what we intended to do all along anyway, and the middle tier, 3/4 is in my Grandmas freezer and 1/4 went to the PIL as they complained they didn't get any on the night... well if they weren't too busy sitting outside all night and actually got off their bum's to to buffet, they would have >:(

Don't know when we'll eat the 3/4 but I'd say go with whatever YOU like cause if you have 3 different flavours you'll end up with them chopping your whole cake up! Ours was easy to take away as it was just missing a tier haha. And its you that will end up eating what's left. So why get fruit or sponge if you don't like it? It'll just go to waste!
