Should I have a fruit cake because it's tradition...... even though I don't like it? Or just have one tier in fruit? (I plan to have a four tier cake)

I think it's good to go for what you want?

Also another bit of advise is if your having a tier caked one on top of each other you have to have the fruit as the bottom tier as it's heavier then sponge! X x

thanks. We asked the venue and they said we could have 2 cakes if we really wanted to so we are having a professionally made one, and then mil is making a seperate cupcake stand with a large giant cupcake on top which she is copying the design from one we saw from the cupcake factory haha! which will go on top of all of the little cup cakes. Just not sure whether to keep them just lemon or not instead of the poppyseed too! They are going in nice little lace cupcake holders and will have ivory roses on them. Well excited

I HATE fruit cake also, and so don't a lot of our guests so we are hoping for a sponge cake with a small layer of cherry cake as thats my h2bs favourite. h2b however REALLY wants a whisky cake but said he wouldn't be prepared to share that so it will more than likely be my wedding day gift to him lol.
we also have a fair amount of guests how don't like cake (or sweet things) at all, so I'm thinking of a small cheese (savoury) cake. Each cake will probably be only 2 maybe 3 tier as we will only have around 50-60 guests

You don't have to stick with something just because it's 'tradition'. I love fruit cake but husband doesn't - so we had sponge with cream filling. And none of us wanted the 'traditional' wedding type cake either - so we had a large 'open book' design with our names, the place we got married and the cake toppers on.

I'm not having anymore children lol and I also love chocolate cake! I might get an M&S fruit bar like has been said, the cake is for dessert on the night time x

As mentioned if you are going to have fruit cake it needs to be the bottom layer but if you dont want your largest tier to be fruit cake a good alternative may be to get a kitchen cake made of fruit. Its basically a slab of fruit cake done in the same icing colour as your tiered cake but stays in the kitchen and then after you cut the cake its taken away to be cut they will cut slices of the fruit kitchen cake too for any guests that prefer fruit. Your guests wont notice any difference.

I totally love fruit cake although my h2b doesn't, i like things to match so I did considering forgoing the fruit cake until his mother told me I couldn't have it because his family don't like it, now (as with my engagement ring) I am being extra subborn and we having a teired cake with fruit on the bottom. And as my OH has informed me that when we have children he wants them christened we will have to have the top tier as well
My OH fancies the idea of cupcakes, so like Suzky we will probably have a cupcake stand as well.

I love fruit cake, and would like 100 tiers of it if I could. But to be fair to our guests (haha) I am going to have four tiers of four different flavours. My friend did this last year with fruit, lemon, chocolate and coffee. I love the idea of carrot cake though so will possibly do sponge, lemon, carrot and fruit. x

My last wedding we had one fruit and one sponge and so much of it was wasted because nobody liked it so this time we are having all different flavours (see the thread about showing off your cake) and we are going to use it for our dessert as well as letting guests take some home...........no wasting this time round hehehe

We're having a 2 tier cake with cake pops on top, The bottom tier will be a fruit cake that will be shared out into boxes for favours (along with our pick n mix station!), then the top tier will be a vanilla sponge and the cake pops will be made to my very special chocolate cherry brownie recipe. As h2b doesn't like fruit cake, and I only like it in small doses and can't have one with nuts we thought it best to not go overboard with fruit cake, but it does keep forever so it is ideal!

Ours is 3 tiers chocolate, lemon and vanilla for approx 52 guests which hopefully will mean lots left over.....but none will be wasted ...have visions already of Steve, me and kids by the pool the day after with a big slab of cake each! Kind of obsessed with food today, and only got light choices mushroom risotto for dinner. :-(

In regards to the idea of a fruit cake on the bottom rather than on the top due to weight, it really does depend upon how you are displaying it.

If your cake is using pillars between tiers or just stacked directly on top of each other, then you must put your fruit cake on the bottom as the sponges would not be strong enough to support it. However, if you are using one of those metal stands where you have a ring to place each cake on so the stand is supporting each cake rather than the lower cake, then its entirely upto you which order you do the cakes in.

I have seen a cake fall off a table where a combination of icing not being left to harden long enough and no dowels to support the pillars meant the pillars sank at an angle due to the weight of the top tier, causing the top tier to crash to the floor. Similar would happen if you tried to place a fruit cake on top of a sponge cake using pillars.
