    Hi all,

im fairly new to all this, however im so stuck i thought id give up my forum virginty haha!

Me and my partner are getting married dec 2014, we are currently thinking of wedding cakes and we have hit a stumbling block. we want a really lovely cake we just dont want the fruit cake or marzipan icing(apologies if spelt wrong) but we've no idea in which direction to take things. the wedding colours are red and gold, theres lots of candles for a warm romantic effect. im open to any suggestions however i dont like nuts, i do love victoria sponge though but its how to decorate it etc. would anyone like to maybe put forward a few ideas or websites etc

    Thank you

ps my H2B auntie is making the cake as shes really good at making them. :)

i was starting to think layers might be a good idea. i really like cheese cake and chocolate cake but ive heard sponge don't last very long, so will be have to be made literally days before the wedding :s could be dangerous haha :) im just not a fan of icing at all, apart from like butter cream or is it gnas i should probably go try some :D xx

    Welcome to the site!

The picture of the cake next to my forum name on this post is what we're having for our cake. You have the same colour scheme as H2B and I

    Great choice!

H2B and I are having the bottom tier lemon sponge, the tier up from that chocolate and the next tier up is vanilla then the small top tier will be fruit (not a lover of fruit but wanted something traditional and we will keep it, freeze it and have it for our first child's Christening cake).

You don't have to have a traditional fruit if you don't like it. I'd suggest contacting a few local cake makers who do wedding cakes and talk through all the options and let them know what you'd like, I'm sure they'll be able to guide you, obviously you don't have to commit to them as you're just enquiring, then once you're sure of what you want your H2B auntie can make it for you x

We're having a 4-tier cake plus a separate cutting-cake, so can have up to 5 different flavours. We're definitely having fruit for the top tier, as it's smallest and we think it will be the least popular; we then have to choose between chocolate, vanilla sponge with raspberry and buttercream, toffee and caramel, lemon, and carrot cake. We'll have 3-4 out of these, but are totally undecided as to which ones as they're all utterly delicious.

So, I'd probably go for different tiers in different flavours, so that everyone gets something they like.

My mouth is watering with all this cake talk! One of the things I'm soooo looking forward to on the day is eating my cake lol! I've got a dairy allergy so our cake is being made dairy free so I can eat every tier lol. I'm going to be the unattractive bride in the corner in the evening gorging on cake!

We're having something completely different.... Chocolate and Guinness cake!!!!
It may not sound too appealing but we had a taste testing session with 5 of our neighbours and everyone went back for more!!!!
And, the longer you leave it the better it tastes!!!

If you like victoria sponge you should g00gle naked wedding cake pics - they are amazing.

As your colours are red and gold you could have a red velvet cake and have the cream cheese icing dyed gold.

I've seen lots of cakes in wedding magazines that are moving away from the traditional fruit cake. There are quite a few tiered 'nude' victoria sponges that just have a dusting of icing sugar on them and are decorated with read flowers or strawberries. They look really stunning.

There are loads of options, but i advise you speak to your cake maker for suggestions. We are having fruit bottom then lemon sponge and 2 vanilla sponge but also a chocolate sponge but be in the kitchen and cut up serpartly. We were advised that some cakes are harder to ice especially if having royal icing and you want fruit at the bottom if possible as heavier. You can have fruit at the top but needs supporting well xxx

    Leanne,

We had a madeira cake with buttercream icing piped on as roses. The buttercream has glitter in and we had butterflies with gold centres and tiny flowers with gold centres too. Not nearly as heavy to eat as a fruitcake with icing.

    There's a photo in my album x

I don't like fruit cake. Makes me feel sick.
I'm going to try and make my own cake. I should really start now the last time I baked was in school and that was 10 years ago.
I'm going to have sponge cake at least ill eat it then.and if all else fails I'm off to a$da.

I was just thinking about this but in America almost no one has a fruit cake for their wedding. They also tend to make creamy icings. I would love if it went that way here. I really don't care for fruit cake :(

You're definitely not alone in not being too keen on fruit cake! We'll probably have a combination of different layers - H2b's auntie has offered to make a cake and she only does fruit so we'll have one layer fruit, probably the smallest layer. I know people often say you can't have the top tier as fruit as it's too heavy, but I'm reliably informed by various cake shops that you can, it just takes some planning and plenty of dowels! H2b reckons we'll keep the top tier until the first christening so it'll have to be fruit!
I think red velvet could be lovely with your colour scheme. As for how to decorate, literally anything you want can be done, only takes a minute looking on a search engine to see that - is amazing what kind of cakes are out there! ;)

    Hi ladies,

Thank you for all your replies, you have certainly gave me some options to think about. I believe ive got a date with google now to check out some of your ideas :) the H2B wont be too impressed though seen as it means me not heading to bed just yet haha! Some of your replies gave me a chuckle, i agree in the my wedding, my way. H2B mum is very traditional so cnt really say she will love our wedding, firstly its not in a church, secondly we're having a sign saying ' today two families become one, pick a seat not a side' and then my dress is going to be mainly gold, no flowers, lots of candles. so im steering away from tradition a little therefore fruit cake is really not thing. im looking forward to seeing the nude sponge cakes and seeing what the red velvet will be like :) thanks again ladies :D xx
