    Hi,
We will be looking at our 1st choice venue this weekend & talking to the onsite caterer (can use either onsite or other caterer), we will be inviting 130 to our wedding so we need to keep food costs down.
The venue has suggested a 3pm ceremony so obviously our guests will have had lunch beforehand.
I would love a carvey/roast as it will be a sunday (bank hol weekend) my OH wants a finger buffet.
I think we need to serve the wedding breakfast around 6pm & serve finger buffet or similar between 9 & 10pm, ie 2 meals, My partner thinks 1 meal is enough!!!
Obviously having to serve 2 meals is going to bump the price up, but I think people expect something to pick at later in the evening.
During your wedding planning what food options have you found to be cheapest?

We got married at 3pm, we ate around 6pm, by the time that had finished it was about 9pm so we did not offer any more food. Are you have a three course meal as that is what we had, fills them up then, and like you say they would have eaten prior to coming.

Yeah I agree with GF and as for evening guests; make sure you state on the invite that there is no food available in the evening so people know to eat beforehand :)

I dont think we can afford a 3 course meal for that many guests & from personal experience after eating a 3 course meal we just want tosleep lol, family & friends have said the same. So I'm thinking more 1 course (main meal), then cut up some of our cake if guests want pudding, were having a sweet table too. Then buffet in the evening or as I have seen suggested on here bacon baps.

I have been getting quotes from various caterers & the cheapest so far has been £14.50 each for a hog roast, served with a choice of potatoes, veg, stuffing, etc. So if we do an evening buffet thats going to bump it up to at least £20 each plus alcohol on top.
    Weddings are so expensive!!

We had a 2pm ceremony and we had a 3 course meal around 5, then a buffet at 9. Everyone who ate a 3 course meal were still eating the buffet food. Also, if you have evening only guests, they'll need feeding. Obviously if you can't afford to, don't. But if you cold afford it, I do think you'd need both. Sorry x

H2B's cousin got married few weeks ago and they didnt have much money so they had a 2pm ceremony with about 30 guests (ceremony was limited) and then had 100 people for a hog roast buffet style meal which really cut costs down. then in the evening they had like cheese boards. having a hog roast or something similar in the day will really cut your costs down. i dont personnally know what this kind of food arrangement was like as i wasnt invited to wedding so H2B didnt go, but his mom said that the hog roast was great but everyone was pretty hungry in the evening with just a cheese board.

just remember though that most venues are only allowed to put food out for 1.5 hours - the rest has to go in the bin cus of health and safety so bear that in mind when your thinking about it.

have you considered just inviting some to the evening to cut numbers down? we have big families so with just parents, siblings, aunties uncles and immediate cousins and few friends we have 75 guests. personally we went for a package deal which has cut costs down - £3999 for 60 day guests, and 120 evening with drinks, canapes, 3 course meal and hog roast for evening etc. we could have got a cheaper package but fell in love with venue. shop around and compare prices but dont feel like you have to have 3 course meal if you cant afford it xxx

130 guests believe it or not is our cut back list, both of our family's are really close & we want to share our day with all of them.
Our numbers are actually 120 but were allowing for an extra 10 incase single people have partners by then, it breaks down to:
    70 are my partners family
    35 my family
    10 close friends
    Myself, partner & 3 children
    10 spare places

Hopefully the venue's onsite caterer can come up with some great ideas for us.
Failing that I think it will have to be a hog roast, just found a local butcher that caters for functions. He charges £700 for our numbers, that is for a pig (cooked, carved & served), baps, stuffing, apple sauce, 3 salad options (new potatoes inc) & 3 dessert options. Wow that's under £5.40 each, going to email them for a proper quote, incase I'm reading there website wrong.

In my opinion, supplying the 3 course meal and stating to evening guests there will be no food is fine especially considering your ceremony time. Also, don't forget you have your cake (I assume) so if people do get hungry, then they can have cake :)
