Hey guys, one of our guests has decided they'd like to get us something for the actual day, something extra that we wouldn't otherwise have. Now, fireworks were mentioned... we're just wondering whether they're worth having at all, do they really add anything to the day? Or any other ideas?

I'd probably check with your venue first to see if they allow it - a lot of venues don't and I suspect after what happened on the Isle of Wight at the weekend, more will be tightening up.
Having said that...I LOVE fireworks and think it's an ace idea!

    i had to say no.
The amount of money they cost is hideous! Plus you gotta spend a lot to get a decent display.
Iknow someone else is paying but i would think of something else personally x

As Elle said, to get a decent display you're talking mega-bucks: it can easily run into the thousands. For that reason, I personally think that unless you're having a very big wedding on a very big budget, or already have everything else covered and really have nothing else to spend extra cash on, the money might be put to better use elsewhere; esp if the display would only be small.

I like the idea of having Chinese lanterns released at the end of the ceremony, maybe that may be an idea for you

ok, we went for the fireworks but....
they do cost a hell of a lot of money. An 8 minute package for us is £1600 plus VAT.... therefore, we are not really talking as though guests can be funding these, even a big guest. I think you can get some smaller packages for about 500 plus VAT but these are fired from a single location and dont have the wow factor you are looking for. I think you will either need to add money to it, or leave it as some of the cheaper packages dont give the wow and are a bit of a waste of money.

Check with the venue too as listed buildings do have restrictions... our firework company is being good with us as the law on listed buildings and fireworks is due to change at any point and so they wont even take a deposit yet so use a decent firm. Often venues have their own preferred supplier as they know that they comply with venue regulations.

DO NOT allow guests to buy them if they think they are going to set them off themselves. Venues wont allow it and drunken ness with fireworks is very dangerous.

I voted yes for you but this will be something you probably end up paying for, or siginifcantly contributing towards and just check on all the paper work and restrictions etc. Good luck and let me know what you decide x

I think its best to read the comments. Are the guests actually prepared to pay for a supplier to set off a proper firework display?

Yes... They actually suggested a specific supplier, and it would be £1000. I just wasn't sure if it actually added that much to a wedding, I've never seen them at a wedding before. I'm just wondering if it might be worth throwing more into the flower budget and on maybe a coffee and chocolate course after the meal...??? Like I said, I really don't know.

it depends what you are looking for. If you feel as though the flowers arent as you would like then by all means spend it on flowers.

We are only going for the fireworks as we literally have covered everything to a standard we are happy with and we felt as though this would be a nice touch. It depends if you think your guests would appreciate it.

6-8 minutes watching fireworks does seem a lot longer so you do feel as though you have your monies worth. Do they have a video showing your arrangement? Ours filmed the displays so we can get an idea on what they look like on the day and we were impressed. I do think its a nice idea but only if it goes. You dont want it as a random add on.

I agree with suzky; the questions I'd be asking myself if I were you would be:

What will I get for that £1000? If we're talking 8 minutes of fireworks, then IMPO it might be worth it; if we're talking 2-3 minutes, then no, it probably won't be worth it as it'll be over so quickly.

Do I have everything else I want, to the standard I want it?

Our priorities were food and drink, and we've spent a lot on these areas, but if we had a larger budget, I'd spend even more eg we're putting about £2k behind the bar as it is, but if I had extra cash, we'd do a free bar all night. Similarly, I love cakes with vintage-style 'lace' all-over decoration; but this would cost us an extra £300 so we'll likely go with something plainer, simpler, and cheaper.

It all depends on your priorities, and also what you think will matter to your guests; if for eg you're not putting money behind the bar, do you think that that £1k might be better spent here than on a short firework display?

Only you can really answer those questions, as only you know your own priorities :-)

i looked at a 3 minute display which was 2500 a five min display was 6000 and then a ten minute was upwards of 7500 really not worth it at all even if your not paying :-( and that was for someone to come set them off if we wanted to it was a hell of a lot cheaper like in the hundreds but is the risk of hurting yourself worth it?

ooo your gonna hate me but I have been told that whilst they look absolutely fantastic, they do not taste anywhere near as nice as they look and can be very dry, Therefore, ask for cake samples before committing. Sorry but we looked into all this about a year ago and found out all about these. In the end we have gone with a cheaper cake but tastes amazing and looks very vintage instead so still fancy but half the price and tastes better :)
