so i was talking about wedding rings and found one i loved but it was £7000. way out of our price range. dannys dad turned around and said you arent having one for that amount, try more like a tenna! what the heck!!? ok, so i know im not going to be able to afford 7k for a ring but im not going to go out buying a cheap on that i hate just to save on some money! i will be wearing it for the rest of my life so i want to love it, and if that means spending a little more than i was hoping to then so be it. im not fussed about an expensive dress, fancy cars or the grandest venue. that isnt what is important to me. the vows are the most important thing and the ring is too because it stands for a symbol of those vows which will stay on me forever, unlike the other things that will just be for one day kept in a few photos! grrrr sorry i reallly needed to get that off my chest, sorry! x

Bad enough he already jokes about my engagement ring being out of a christmas cracker! :-@... I think all dad's natuarally know how to wind people up!

I think you'd be hard pushed these days to find a wedding ring for a tenner. Is he still living in a different time when bus tickets were 10p? the price ranges at argos only go from £20 on their wedding rings! I'd ignore him hun, sounds like a scrooge! It's your day and your finger, if you don't want it turning green after a few weeks and can afford the one you want what does it matter to him? x

lol abbey think you are pretty much spot on. he said dannys mums ring cost him £20 back when they got marrried about 50 years ago...not being funny but translate that to modern prices and it sure wouldnt be that now!! he wasnt joking he said abut the rings isnt the important part. this sounds a bit mean but since we lost dannys mum he has turned into a grumpy scrooge and yea that sounds awful but dannys sister even said the same thing. so whist im trying not to take it personally it really did upset me and got me quite angry. i really dont see why it does matter to him. i wont be spending any more than £150 on my ring hopefully, but i dont want to feel guilty that ive bought a ring costing more than a tenna :(

id give him a tenner for Xmas this year see how he likes that lol
they can be so cheeky some times my ring is a few hundred over budget cos i want 18ct to go with my engagement ring and the one i fell in love with matches it perfectly the only person that knows how much they coast apart from me and h2b is my sister wont tell anyone else as i know what will be said. pick what you and h2b want as long its no one else's business what it cost.

think h2b does his parents head in as he never tells them anything money is a taboo subjectt with him think part of it is doesn'ts like people to think hes bragging about what we have comparedto what they have. he hates i tell my sister everything. but we have been the same for years I'm not about to stop now to keep him happy .

Funny this has come up. My brother went and bought an engagement ring for his G/F at the weekend (on his own, silly boy).... I've just came back from the jewellers to beg them to take it back and let us swap it for another one! Lol. She has to wear this ring for the rest of her life and my brother thinks he's qualified to go solo and choose this! Bless him, he tried, but both the size of the ring and the diamond are too small.... I'm a good sister!

You're right TLU, you wear it forever and you have to love it! xx

He's annoyed at himself for going on his own now. I dropped enough hints that I'd go with him lol.
They are going to Paris at the end of the month. How sweet?! They're only 23 and 22, so don't think they'll get married straight away, I guess they'll want to move in together first. She's a lovely girl though.
The jewellers agreed that I could change it, so I've told my bro to give me some more cash and I'm going to exchange it tomorrow.
She will like the new one!! He he xx

People just have different priorities...for example you said you're more interested in the ring than the dress, whereas i've splashed out on my dress instead and want a cheaper wedding ring. I'm sure he wouldn't mean to upset you xx

Wow, £7k for a wedding ring, is it a designer platinum diamond encrusted one once owned by royalty? I didn't even know wedding rings could cost that much, I thought they were like £1,500 max for a really luxe one.

FIL2B prob has no idea of these kinda things, just ignore him.

My FIL2B used to work in wholesale jewellry so can get all sorts at cost price and bless him offered to help get my e ring and our wedding rings.

I already knew exactly what I wanted (bespoke one I designed myself) and where I would get this made (ethical jewellers on Bruton Street) and we'll be getting the wedding rings from there too (mine has been designed to go with my e ring) - but I did feel guilty as I think he was really genuinely trying to help with keeping costs as low as possible.

I agree though, the wedding ring is something you will wear for the rest of your life so it has to be right and special and more than a tenner spent on it.

yea 7k isnt exaclt my idea of a reasonable wedding ring price either lol

i even laughed saying typical that its so expensive, trust me, etc.... it was just so patronising thats what got me!

i know he didnt mean to upset me or anything, but its just his lack of tact and treating me like a child. i'm 28 for crying out loud, i think i know whats what when it comes to spending our money by now lol

lol we're spending £20 on ours, but theyre beautiful handmade silver rings as we wanted something different and unique and we fell in love with them, but we've also said that in the future if we want to upgrade to more expensive, we will (as OH actually works in a top jewellers!)

its totally upto you how much or how little you spend, like you said, you need to love the ring!

lol cford20, its not even like we can afford to spend that kind of money and we certainally wont be!! the less i can spend on it the better, but im not prepared to get a ring i dont like or even think is ok, just to save a few quid! i dont want to spend more than £200 on it at the very most!

Glitterpix, thats such a lovely idea, to design them yourselves. do you have any pictures of them? x

I'm hoping to get a ring that matches my engagement ring and where h2b got it from, it certainly wont be costing a tenner haha! How cheeky! If you want a lovely wedding ring then that's up to you chick, at the end of the day it's going to be the ring your wear every single day so it's important to have something you love xx

Oh my god I would have had something to say to him!!! He living in the stone ages!! Mind you it's amazing how weddings and the cost of things bring out the worst in the older generation!!! My in laws to be are that bit older and we don't mention the cost of anything anymore as they just go on and on about it!! But then I'm sure they don't agree with us having the big wedding as my h2b has been married before and had the big wedding!!! But the point he rightly made was that I haven't and all girls deserve their big day!!! Lol xx
