agree with you barbie, like we are at 12:30 ceremony we will be providing a buffet (salmon, chicken, gallette etc) for lunch at half 3 and afternoon tea and a cheese tower at about half 7/8, but i wont be providing any extras. they'll have some wine on the tables and probably a welcome drink but that is it. we are a very foodie people but on a tight budget and how i didnt want my day to just be about the food. We have invited the guests we wished to be there we could of easily invited 150 more but they wouldnt of been there just because we wanted them too. I do expect guests to use common sense and think about eating as our ceremony isnt until half 12 so by the time thats finished etc and we have go tthe venue. Its just like i hope our guests enjoy them selves why there eating (infact during the whole day) but show a little decorum about it. I went to my cousins wedding last week. lovely wedding. but got sat on a table with some lovely people but they were loud and did shots before the speaches (bar was available to buy from) and were shouting across the room (there naturally like that, they werent rude in what they were saying), just couldnt believe they were shouting to people the other side of the room and kept standing up and high fiving, id like to add one was 37 lol obviously they knew what she was like but i guess the word im looking for is respect for the bride and groom. ones the meal and speaches are over, hell go for it i dont care. i know i sound like a snob. but you would think like you said about your guest being special to you that you are special enough to them that they would have the common sense and respect for you to steady themselves.

We're starting the reception at 6pm, eating at 7, do you think we need any canapes for the first hour, or small snacks available later at night, even just tortillas etc?

Our problem is that we are getting married at 11 but then not eating until 3.45 so its a long time but we simply cannot afford canapes. We are having a 3 course sit down meal for 79 people then a buffet in the evening of bacon butties, chips and pizza. We have been telling people that there will be a long wait so bring a little snack if they think they will want something to eat, as we are not funding anymore food for them. We simply cannot afford it!

We got married at 12.30, meal was at 4ish, evening buffet about 9ish. Drink flowing from about 2ish.

No canapes, no drunkeness before the evening reception (just some hangovers from the Friday night pre party!!!).

Think most people had a late breakfast. We did tell people that the meal wouldn't be until 4, and the bar did sell crisps!!! The food level we served is pretty standard from all the weddings we've attended. The only food I've had before the meal was home made shortbread with the reception drinks.

My sister got married on Saturday at 4pm so we had a big breakfast and then bacon rolls before we got ready (about 1.30pm), got to the reception for about 5.15pm and the buffet was at 7pm so most people had 3 drinks or so and got stuck in to a massive buffet and there was a sweet bar for pudding which went down really well!

Massive fish bowls filled with sweets, flumps and things like that and fancy plates with bakewell tarts and mini cakes. Was perfect!

    Can't wait to be married!

I fear that I may have sounded like I was making an order! :-S

Ultimately the comfort and behaviour of the guests have a huge impact on how the B&G end up feeling about their day. No matter how much you hope or think that guests will exercise self control, it is just one thing that you cant control. The experience I was talking about wasnt people going over board or being greedy, and none of the guests went there looking to be "fed" - it was circumstance.

The Bride ended up in tears and said as she only has to eat a slice of bread and is full, she didnt think about other food but after what happened she sees that more food could have helped.

Ppl need to be fed otherwise they'll be whingey & prob won't dance etc. It's important to be clear about food & timings in ur invite I think?

I don't know if my guests are going to feel a bit overfed! lol. We're having canapes, 3 course meal and a full, fancy buffet in the evening! I was looking into getting a profiterole tower for the buffet too but its just too expensive so we're going to serve the wedding cake as a dessert instead. On the other hand, we're providing quite a bit of alcohol which is exactly why we're providing so much food - I really dont want people getting ridiculously drunk!!!!!

If it came down to either choosing an evening buffet or canapes, I would definately recommend going for food in the evening. Even if it was just chips!

As I dont like when ppl get to drunk even for myself i always would make sure to provide food, i was thinking to have, bread, cheeses, savory biscuits and grapes... guess lots of ppl like those things but for them who dont maybe we should provide hotdogs and pizza :D hehe actually love this idea... h2b always fancy s pizza after a night out... i think comfort food is the best especially if it goes towards night time :) ...

like the idea of this free softdrink bar, or even the hot chocolates for free that defo keeps the costs down i reckon!? dont fancy the bacon rolls as i cant stand bacon :D

i think weddings should have an eveing buffet. last year i went to a wedding where we sat down at 5 if i remember rightly so they didnt have an evening buffet and so many people were moaning. the meal wasnt that nice anyway and everyone was hungry! we left at just gone 10 to go get food!

at our wedding we are eating at 4 and will have a buffet at 9 xx

well its always up to bride and groom if they cant afford a big buffet understandable, but surly u can easily provide snacks like crisps, fruits, sweets, or some rolls for ur guests... with the sit down meals well nt everyone likes the food bride and groom choose :)

Awww what a shame the bride ended up in tears over everyones lack of self control! We have plenty of food, I wasn't sure but after posting the list on here I got a definite "plenty of food" vote, lol. As for drink we are providing just enough for those that can drink. We have at least 10 children, and one out of every couple will be driving so not worried about guests going overboard. We also will have one new mother and one pregnant one so at most it will be a wine spritzer. We also have lots of cloudy lemonade and other soft drinks for the kids and the drivers along with tea as it is a tea party, lol, so hopefully it won't be an issue for us. People should have some will power though, it is a wedding, a special occasion to yes enjoy themselves but not get so drunk that they ruin the day, tut tut! xx

It's a shame food is so expensive over here. The amount they seem to serve at US weddings is way more than we get for our money here! I'd love to be able to do a "cocktail hour" like they do there with almost unlimited food.

I have noticed that on the TV programmes. Thing is as I have said before, for smaller budgets, I would adrore a bread corner with grapes and dips mmmmmmmmmm it doesnt have to be expensive if the venue allows it.
