Thought that I would give a bit of advice, that I found out from SIL2B's wedding yesterday.

Canapes & evening buffet are a MUST! A must in order to soak up the booze and keep control. Nothing worse that a room full of drunkards :-0

The booze was flowing and as soon as the glass was empty it ws filled up again. But by 10pm it all got a but too much. The damage had been done by starting the drinking on an empty tummy. I had agood breakfast, but didnt get time for lunch even though it was a 3pm service. We were drinking from about 4.30pm and the food was at 6pm.

Thinking about it today, even for those on small budget it doesnt have to cost much. A "bread" table with fruit would have been perfect.

I think my guests will be sick of food by the end lol; we're having canapes during the drinks reception, then a meal (served starter and dessert and buffet main so they can eat as much as they want), cake, and then the evening buffet. Food was very important to me, as personally, I hate going hungry, and at a wedding it's not like you can wander off and get something if you're peckish.

We're also being careful with the drinks; for the welcome drinks we're doing Buck's Fizz rather than something like Pimm's or sparkling wine as it's weaker, and have gone for half a bottle of wine for the meal rather than a full bottle

I agree. One wedding i went to started at 1pm. I was rushing about so much I didnt have time for lunch. Ceremony took about 5mins as was a civil one in a hotel so off to the bar we went. I was told dinner would be at 4.30 so I waited instead of popping out for a McD. Dinner was late, served about 5.30 and I was already drunk. Then the free wine.... oopsie.

I dont really remember the night guests arriving or moving into the dance room. I just remember being outside having a smoke and falling backwards into a flower pot. Legs in the air and dress round my head. Didnt spill my drink tho! (I'm a true Scot!)

H2B put me home in a taxi, and it was only 10pm! He was the best man so had to stay.

so we are having canapes, formal sit down meal and a big buffet at night time!

You see, I would have agreed before yesterday, that it is down to the guests to exercise self control. But suppose it the emotion of the day that adds to it all. Maybe they should have jigged their budget a bit from all free drinks.

tbh if the bride and groom dont wnt to put a extra food thing on..they dont have too!! they shouldnt have to do anythin with their budget to provide MORE for their guests..their guests are already getting free 3 course meal and possibly free toast drinks as well!!! if they know the ceremony wont start til 3...then its the guest responsibility to make sure they eat before hand ...i think that often people are expected to think of the guests more than they expect to think of themselves, as bride and groom, what THEY want not whats expected

I don't think offering free drinks is an issue; I've been to events with free bars but have actually got much less drunk than if I had to pay because I feel bad drinking loads of drinks that someone else is paying for :-s Ultimately it's up to people to exercise self-control, and some people will get off their faces whether or not there's a free bar as that's their mentality. We've tried to be careful with drinks as I've said, and are providing loads of food so people aren't drinking on empty stomachs, but, I'm sure some people will have one too many. Luckily none of our guests are obnoxious so if they do, it won't really matter, and most people we're inviting can handle their drink.

We're putting about £2.5k behind the bar though, and spending an additional £1500 on drinks for our 44 day guests (though at our venue this doesn't go far), and I won't limit this on the off-chance some people will drink more than they can handle..

I have to agree that it's a good idea to make sure the amount you feed your guests is matched well to the drink. If you're giving them lots of booze and nothing to eat then a large proportion of people will get plastered.

I went to a wedding last summer and it gave me load's of idea's when it came to food and drink.
The only food we had was a 3 course wedding breakfast but we had a glass of champagne at arrival, a bottle of wine each and champagne for the toast and no water at all at the table then in the evening there wasn't a buffet but there was a free bar all evening. No food, lots of alcohol. Not good!
So remembering that, at my wedding we are having a glass of champagne on arrival and 5 different canapé choices per person. A 4 course wedding breakfast, half a bottle of wine per person and unlimited amount of sparkling water on the tables, a glass of champagne for the toast's. Coffee and cake after the meal. In the evening we are having bacon butties, potato wedges with a selection of dips, a sweetie buffet and FREE soft drinks! The bar is open all day and evening till midnight but they will have to buy any alcohol they want.
A wedding I was at last month, the bride told all the guests before the wedding that the card machine's were broke so the venue only took cash. Know one likes having a load of cash on them, so there werent extremely drunk people because they couldnt afford it!

You have to feed your guest's, you just can't leave them hungry. I totally agree too much food can be totally off putting but you don't want people going home and raiding there cupboards because they are starving. And you really need to weigh out the alcohol with food, as much funny as it can be having a room full of drunks I just don't think that's right for a wedding

i think a sit down meal and evening buffet is sufficient enough...then again depends on what time your ceremony is but even so guests need to eat before hand and shouldnt have to expect the Bride & Groom to pay out for a extra expense to top them up...but thats just how i see it..n unnessary expense but then if you have the budget for it, then go for it

But if you're having a reception from 8 until 12, people WILL get hungry; the earliest you can realistically eat is about what, 6.30, if you have to travel? That means a good 5-6 hours without food, drinking, and drink on an empty stomach is not good... I disagree with pandering to guests to an extent, but at the same time, surely a wedding is about celebrating with people you care about, so surely they DO matter?.. I want my guests to have a good time, and have fun and be comfortable, and that includes not going hungry. Some of our evening guests will be travelling 40 mins to our reception, so I wouldn't even contemplate not providing any food at all, esp as it'll be from 7.30 until approx 1am.

I think if the bride and groom are the only people that matter, eloping abroad might be appropriate. While I won't compromise on some things, ultimately we are inviting people as our guests, because we want them there and have asked them to be there; they aren't doing us a favour coming, we want them there, and their feelings and comfort are important to us...

Mrs hollins: I agree with not pandering in the ways you've said; no-one, not even my parents (who are paying) is allowed to try to dictate what we do/don't do; my MIL2B has already made some 'suggestions' that we've firmly said 'no' to. As far as decor, venue choice, dresses/suits, etc, it's all our choices.

However, the comfort of our guests has been high on our list; we wanted a venue that would be suitable for everyone (we have some disabled guests so good access was important; we wanted something with accommodation; we wanted somewhere within an hour's drive max; etc), and our food and drink choices have been significantly influenced by our guests; we've tried to ensure that food-wise there's something for everyone (hence having a buffet main as it gives guests a vegetarian option as well as a choice of steak, salmon, or chicken), and have thought carefully about drinks (not providing too much alcohol, and also providing plenty of water, as well as soft-drink options if people prefer). I've seen so many people say that the guests ;don't matter', and just think if that's the case, why on earth are you inviting them? Not to mention that if you just please yourselves you could end up wasting money on things people won't eat eg I would happily have medium-rare steak as a main, but I know half our guests won't eat that so don't see the point serving it if it'll be wasted...
