I agree with the others, is there any action you can take against them? Hard when it's family but if you didn't even know then you can't be held accountable surely! Why on Earth should you pay off their debt?!
CommentAuthorKistHall
Family or not that is unacceptable! That can ruin your credit rating and history, and make everything harder - report them! Why should you suffer because of their selfishness!!
CommentAuthorMrsMoran
That's definitely very true, it can destroy your credit rating and make things really difficult for you, particularly if you ever need to get a mortgage out or insurance or anything, they'll look at things like credit rating and can be the difference between you getting it and not getting it xxxxx
CommentAuthorTori
If they have taken it out you should be able to prove it wasn't you and would lead to them. It depends whether you are happy for them to be done for fraud though?
If you are willing to go down that route you need to get access to the call/ application it was made and show it wasn't you x

If you didn't sign the contract you shouldn't owe a thing. I understand not wanting to call the police but maybe you could call a legal professional or the bank and discuss it with them?

had similar thing with spare daughter and her mum and N ex t. If you ever get any letters from a debt collecting agency remember that they have little or no rights. I can point you in the right direction of an excellent forum if you want help.

That's shocking! You really need to look into it and get it sorted. You shouldn't be paying for their debts xx

Ok first of all you contacted the phone company, they agreed to stop it, they didn't it's thee problem you therefore need to write to them disputing the debt and requesting that all adverse entries are removed from your credit file.
One of the benefits of a credit card is that if there is a dispute, the credit card company had to prove that you spent the money rather than you proving you didn't. Write to this company and dispute the payments.
Give each company 8 weeks to deal with it and then refer to the financial ombudsman.
If you haven't paid anything don't start. The companies have six years to enforce the loan from the last time you accepted responsibility for it!

i had a credit card whilst pregnant with my eldest, i was admitted to hospital and wasnt allowed to leave the ward as me and my child had nearly did, so i asked my h2b to pay my minimum payment for me, the credit card company wouldnt accept the payment from anyone other than me even tho my partner explained the situation with them. they statrted charging late payment fees which in turn put me over the limit so i had late payment fees plus over the limit fees and all because they wouldnt le my partner pay on my behalf and i wasnt allowed out of the ward to call them and make the payment myself.
once i was finally out of the hospital and opened my statements and found what had happened i disputed it, months later i called (not having paid a penny from the moment of my dispute), to find that they had n record of the dispute. i told them it was dealt with there and thn or i shall be getting the ombudsman involved. they laughed it off and told me to do so... so i did...
the ombudsman made sure no more fees were allowed to be added, what the total was was what it will remain minus £5 per month. i was to pay £5 per month and no interest, no late payment fees, no over the limit fees. well i was doing ths happily for about 2years, then suddenly they took £192 out of my account (direct debit) so i called them informing them they had diverted from a contract they held with the ombudsman and its up to them what is done.... they either refund that money then zero the debt for the inconveinience or i have the ombudsman shut them down due to their diversion from the contract set up by the ombudsman.
in the end within about an hour the money was in my account, i havent paid a penny since, received an email confirmation the debt had been zeroed as they were charging me for the luxury of nearly dying (or thats how i put it across to them considering how the debt was built up anyway)
there is always a way of getting out of it, if i were you i would seriously make friends with the ombudsman! however.... if the ombudsman asks.... you dont know who it was! you can only assume it was family as one minute your card was there the next time you went to get it it wasnt and then it turned up later somewhere you would never leave it.... this way its "the card has been stolen" therefore unauthorised payments, rather than you allowed them to use the card therefore authorised payments. and when asked why you called up to change details... tell the truth, you called to change some details, to find they had already been changed, then (from the sounds of your post) changed back wthout your permission and knowledge and you only know this because you recieved a letter, phone call, was turned down for credit and enquired as to why, etc
Find out who you are & do it on purpose!

Ill have a look into it as all this happend in 2009/2010 n i havent paid for either my adams c.card or the voda contract... As i was aware after so many yrs it gets wipe and then u wait a few yrs to get to hav a credit score but voda has sent they payment to a debt company in 2011 but i havent recieved anything so didnt know.. Im looking to get a c.card or something to help build my credit up but i dont k ow where to go ive got to wait till i have 14.99 in bank to reactiviate my old account for credit report so i can see whats been used in my name as my family are dodgey and im soooo worried but i havet recieved any debt letters tho since 2010 would this mean old debts could be cancelled and now waiting to be took off my report xxx thank you all xxx

you can get a copy of your credit report hun .. you dont need to have a credit card.
where you say you phoned to cancel both phones .... who did you call ? the company is in the wrong for allowing you cousin to change anything.
if your brother used your card without you knowledge that is a criminal offence
You can get your full credit report online and should get a free trial for a few weeks - you dont need a credit card for one but will show you all debts outstanding and the amount and can start disputing them or clearing them off.
A defult is a non payment of a debt for 3 months and will be stamped on your credit report, it will then be cleared 6 years after you have cleared the outstanding debt so don't presume this debt will disappear as it wont. I don't mean to scare you but you need to get your credit report and look at it and check anything else..... you can be un-tied with people too as their bad credit will affect you expecially if you have lived together as addresses linked. If any of the debts are incorrect then you can get help, Citizen advice will have some good advice on how to dispute it with the companies however once a Debt collections agencies/bailiffs get involved you cant dispute the debt as it has been sold on from the original company to debt collections so they don't care about the ins and outs and just to collect money as you have had long enough.
Good luck xxx

How awful, i am really sorry this had happened. I hope you manage to get it sorted. I thought you could go to Experian and not sure what the other company is called both online and only pay about £2 to get a credit report. LIke other people have said though i would report them to the police and also seek advice from Citizens advice. I am sure they would be a great help on this and may direct you in the right way to prevent you lots of stress and money.

Oh no :( im so sorry to hear that this has happened :( hope you manage to get it sorted.
there is another one, not as exact as experian, but still gives you an idea, and is about £4/5 for a one off then something like that per month for a basic report... annualcreditreport dot co dot uk Dont know i that would be much help to you.
