Traditionally favours were sugared almonds but you can give your guests absolutely anything - we're giving the women a pair of earrings and men a pair of cufflinks. I've been to weddings where scratch cards were given out, another where cookies were given and we also went to a wedding where the couple couldn't afford favours so picked some stones up from the beach and wrote our names on so they doubled as place settings.
As or the invites: they obviously need to have details of the venue(s) and date and things but if you do an online search you should be able to find some examples/templates which you can adapt.

We're having toffee/chocolate apples and doubling them up as place names too, we're going to decorate them ourselves which will be fun! Our wedding is on halloween so we're grabbing halloween/bonfire night ideas together and using those.
You can do anything you want.
My friend made shortbread biscuits in the shape of wedding cakes and a dress, iced them with fondant and put them in a cellophane bag and tied it with a little bit of black ribbon in a bow, was very simple but effective.

As for invites it's good to search the web for templates, there's plenty info on what to include and i think it's usually about 6 months before the wedding but you can do it sooner if you want to, sometimes if people are having to travel far it's best to send them earlier so that travel and accommodation costs can be saved up for and sorted.

Were doing the old love heart sweets, a heart shaped mint and a heart shape chocolate in a small bag. I also made thank you scrolls for each of our guests :)

But I have seen loads of bits and pieces online, there are great ideas out there. You should search for unusual wedding faours.

I am also making my wedding invitations, which took more time to find a template that I liked. Although you will find millions online you just need to have an idea about what you would like it to have. I.e. Lace, champs etc then you can do a search and narrow down your options.
