We gave notice yesterday and I was asked my fathers name as it gets put on the marriage certificate. The guy said it can be my natural or step dad so I said my biological dad. But now I'm not sure.

My mum and dad split when I was 7 (before this he wasn't a great dad, he missed 3 of those 7 birthdays going on holiday with his friends!). We had a relationship when he could be bothered until I was 13 when we had a huge fall out and didn't talk till I was 21. We only made up cos he was dying. He died 6 months later, we'd made up but I always felt guilty for the 8 lost years even though the argument was his doing.

My mum met my step dad when I was 15 and at first I didn't like having him around as I was used to having my mum and brother to myself but I came around. I'm 35 now and he's treat my mum better than my dad did and will do anything for me. I call him dad and he's giving me away.

So I'm thinking I should have put his name instead

Would you feel more guilty about not having your natural father on the certificate? Particularly as he is no longer here?

It's a very personal choice, and there is no right or wrong answer...have you spoke to your mum about this?

    Xx

Could you not have your stepdad as one of your witnesses? That way both names would be on your marriage certificate xxx

I agree with your mom! I do think it should be your birth father on the certificate. And there's many ways your step dad can be involved in your day and its lovely he will be honoured he's giving you away, how sweet xx

I had my step dad on mine, he has been more of a dad to me than the sperm donor. Even if you have put it on there you can change it on the day.
