My mum just sent me an email today letting me know that my grandma is giving me just under £3200 from a bond that is maturing this year. She's 95 and decided that it wasn't worth re-investing it and that she'd rather see it go to her family. I know we're not horrendously tight for money, but it does mean we can turn around and tell the in-laws to stick it if they keep behaving dreadfully OR if it doesn't come to that then we might actually have a little nest egg left over after the wedding to start saving again and... eventually... to ease things when we have children.

Thats spot on :) My nana is 90 and has given us £800 and then said she may have more for us on our wedding day. Its helped pay a load of deposits

She's been in hospital for the past week after a little fall and I haven't been able to see her since I got ill. I'd been planning to go to see her on Sunday anyway, but it will be particularly joyous after such news.

She's been so very generous to us throughout her life; I really hope she makes it to the wedding.

Okay... So I got clarification that this money isn't in addition to paying for my dress, it's instead of; but it does give me more freedom to spend it on a veil etc and to make decisions about how much I want to spend.

Plus my auntie gave me her share to put towards the wedding too, which is incredibly sweet of her.

It gives us a really good buffer if Grant's parents pull out... Or a very comfortable budget for the honeymoon (which I'd massively underestimated on).

I hate that I have to constantly leave a buffer in case Grant's parents decide that they're disowning him for another reason after we've acceded to their demands that he doesn't change his name.

I am incredibly lucky with my family. If anyone ever wonders why I'm having so many relatives there, it's partially because it means a lot to my mum but largely because I love them all and even second cousins are friends.
