OMG so I was out and about today with H2b buying our flowers and accessories when I walked past a window with a wedding cake on display, it was out of this world. Anyway I went in and asked the shop assistant who made it, only to be told oh it's a polystyrene cake for display purposes. So here it is my wonderful idea!!! We have decided to create our own fantastic out of this world cake. We are still having a real one of course with the same colour but this way we can give out the cake after the wedding breakfast but then have the fake cake on display on the evening for the new guests to take photo's of.. Please tell me what you think, am I mad or Is this a good idea???

Sounds a good idea. Are you having same guests to evening do as the ceremony? If your having any extra people have you got enough for those too? Thats only if they are getting cake that is lol. But sounds like a great idea and probably cheaper too and a great reminder of the big day if you decide to keep it x

I'm having 3 squares 1 chocolate, 1 vanilla sponge and 1 fruit. We have 65 day and extra 85 for the evening that's why I thought it would be a great idea to have a cake on display throughout the entire day/night. The actual cake, as long as it's the same colour doesn't really have to be anything fancy as there only eating it. The fake cake will therefore have the finest detail on which would be a shame to cut into. I've looked it up and for the polystyrene bases there only £1 each on the bay and to decorate each 1 about £6.

Wow sounds a great idea then hun. Wasnt expecting it to be that cheap. Definitely sounds a good plan and great for pics too like you say. Have you seen what design you want?

Joci I have bumped a thread for you called 'my wedding cake diary THE HAPPY ENDING' which you might be interested in. A few of my friends have done this which meant the hardwork was done way in advance with iced sheet cakes cut up for the guests behind the scenes. Not only is it an incredibly cost effective way of having a cake but also way less stressful if you choose to do it yourself. Of course the other option is to have a real bottom tear so you can cut into it but the polystyrene bases are so much easier to ice!
CommentAuthorSian''OCD''Holkham
I have heard of people using a fake cake and just handing out slices of cake that they had bought so you look like you have a spectacular cake at a fraction of the cost good idea x
Thanks for the bump Jilly. Sian I've looked on various sites and it appears only America do fake cakes but I'm still looking but I think the best way is to have a go and do it myself. I'm gonna speak to a friend who makes cakes for a living and ask her if she would kindly loan me some of her utensils to make the flowers and swags etc. I have heard that some ppl buy a ready iced cake from Asda and decorate it themselves which doesn't seem a bad idea too x

All it is really is icing it yourself then adding decoration I'm quite lucky as a cake maker friend of family is doing mine as a wedding present and said have whatever you want lol phew big weight off my shoulders hope you manage to sort it out x
Yeah my H2b's sister and cousin are doing ours as a present too but just wanted a back-up plan but really wanted the cake on display for the evening quests to see, this way we can create it then they can make the actual edible version and we can keep the fake one x

CommentAuthorloustew2012
good idea, our top 2 tiers will be faked and cut up previous to the wedding and stored for the buffet. apparently a lot of cake people do this especially high tiered cakes due to the weight. so technically our cake is fruit, then lemon sponge then 2 fake tiers whilst the chocolate and plain tier is already cut up ready to be dished out. xxx
All the ways of my life id rather be with you.
Theres no way without you.

I'm having a fake cake. One of my friends is making my cake and she will be very busy around the time of my wedding as she is also a teacher. So she is going to make the exact cake I want but it will be fake. She is also going to make me a sponge, chocolate and fruit cake for the guests to eat. Defo the way forward a fake cake is cheaper and you can find friends/family members to make cakes for you to give to the guests xxxxx

i went to a wedding fair the other week and a lady actually loans out the fake cakes so you have an amzing cake for pictures and she provides sheet cake to feed the guests she said that noone can tell as the cake is taken away to cut and then the cake is brought out plate thought this was a really clever idea.

Fake cakes are amazing! they reduce costs for those wanting a large tiered cake but wont be able to eat it all.
I Am doing some fake cakes for a friends wedding and was thinking of doing a 6 tier rainbow one for me and my W2B purely for photos but she has decided against it.

Really? Have you done them before then? I'm totally lost as to where to begin, been looking on the bay for some equipment bought a book today showing step by step guide on making the little sugar paste flowers etc.
We can't really afford to have a huge fancy cake that's why I thought of this idea then out the back we would have a few different makes of cake pre- cut to hand out and also so that the evening guests can take pics

I have done about 6 that are 5-6 tiers half & half!
The top two tiers are real cake :-) They are becoming very popular.
If you go on the bay of e you can buy the sugar paste flowers already done by another cake maker if your not overly confident & they are cheap x

I had a look at ready to roll icing but it worked out pretty expensive as you only get it as 100g packets where as if you purchase white in the shops you get 454g for £1.59 and I want champagne colour.
I have ordered a quilting effect stencil as I liked the look on a cake I saw with pearls added to it I'll find the pic to put on

Joci, to cover them is really really easy. I love doing them and decorating them to match either the rest of the cake or another cake. They work brilliantly and no-one would know any different :)

The quilting is beautiful, and ready looks stunning with pearls on. I like the flowers of the 2nd Cake if you can get artifical ones that reduces cost and looks stunning also.
The draping on the 3rd cake can be a little bit more difficult to create yourself but once youve mastered it, it can be rather simple and done in alot of different ways
