got this off google hun
Whether chiffon can be dyed depends on what fiber it is made of. Silk chiffon is easy to dye. Polyester chiffon is very difficult. It also depends on whether you are talking about silk chiffon yardage, or a dry-clean-only dress. You can't dye anything that is not washable. Even if it is washable, the seams on a ready-made dress are almost always sewn with polyester thread, so they will remain the original color after you redye the silk.
Silk chiffon can be dyed to a darker color easily with acid dye or with fiber reactive dye, but polyester chiffon can be dyed only with a special polyester dye called disperse dye, which can be purchased only by mail-order and which must be boiled for an hour with the fabric to dye it.
hope it helps xx

yeah i read that too. the disperse dye WILL work, but boiling the dress might be the thing that ruins it.

polyester apparently cant be dyed very successfully......however if its only going from white to ivory, then doing it 3-4 times with the normal dye....(not the boiling kind) might just work enough to make a slight difference.
littlemisschuckles, why buy a white dress and dye it Ivory? could you not just buy the dress in Ivory?

yeah me too, I love the different coloured lok, I am having 4 bridesmaids all in a different colour....
it really depends on the cost of the dress, if it was cheap enough maybe you could try and dye it, and if it didnt work you havent lost much. but apparently you cant dye polyester very well....HOWEVER.....there is a thread on here somewhere that someone (recently) dyed there petticoat and the dye didnt take to it very well on the first go, becasue the fabric was polyester, but it DID take a bit and a bit is all you need cos its just a slight change.
I am also thinking of doing this , if you read my dress thread you will know the dress I have on order is way too light and i am thinking of either adding another layer to it in a darker chiffon, or dying it.

Cotton takes dye very well, but polyester doesnt take it very well.
