I really want to start some exercises at home but due to medical reasons I'm unable to do exercises that strain my leg, so I've bought some hand weights and thought i could do exercises while siting on the sofa. Does anyone know where I can find exercises suitable for this? I don't know anything bout exercising so don't want to just make it up in case I cause damage. I just want to tone up my arms and anything else I'll be able to without having to use my legs to do it. Any help and advice please :)

That is a difficult one hun as I think majority of exercises use legs. I have commented though to bring it back to top as someone was spamming earlier and sunk thus quite far.

Hopefully some fitness experts can help xx

Kristina is right - the tube of you is a really good place for exercise clips. I've downloaded quite a few on their - might not be so good for your particular needs but the Mel B one is quite good, it's got a just arms bit as well. Otherwise have a good search on the internet and see if you can find either a website or even a tailor made DVD - exercise videos are always going dirt cheap on the bay. I got a 3 disc boxset from Colen Nolan for just £3! It's great as it's 3 totally different things - one is disco, one is dance based with a woman of some dance programme and the best one is the one that Rosemary Connerly leads - it's the most old fashioned of the three but it's really the best one, again, it's got separate sections for arms, legs etc.

Your best bet would be to speak to your doctor, they have all sorts of exercise related info and would be best placed to know what definitely wont affect your leg; or he could send you to physio who can advise you.
If you do try some off the net then do be careful, I know from previous experience that sometimes exercises can look like they only affect certain areas but you can end up tensing in painful places to do them.
    Good luck!

I would second Sarah, and say definately go to your gp or healthcare professional that deals with your ailment.

I don't know if swimming would be an option? I know my mum was told that most exercises were off limits as she has a bone condition, but that swimming is low impact and the best form of exercise for people who can't strain themselves?

Thanks will speak to gp. Can't do swimming as makes it worse. Basically the cartilage in my knee is way too soft meaning my knee cap n bones n that rub against each other and back of knee cap is really rough so causing lots of pain and inflammation when bending knee so effects me all the time and worse when tensing or putting weight on it. In that case definitely get professional advice because a lot of upper body exercise does require bracing yourself with your legs or tensing back muscles that can pull your spine and therefore impact your lower body.

I would have thought that with your injury the doctor may be able to refer you to the physio and then possibly the gym too.
Always worth seeking professional advice though
