I was wondering if anyone could recommend any exercises that I could do at home as I can't afford to go to the gym and i'm sure a lot of you also can't afford gym prices with weddings to pay for so hopefully we can all give each other good tips.
I don't want to lose weight as my dress is being made to fit me, but I'd like to tone up my stomach and also my arms as my wedding dress is strapless.
    Any ideas? Xxx

    Hey,
I'm a personal trainer (hopefully will be able to help) lol. If you have got some free weights, or if you haven't tin of beans or better get bottle of water and fill with sand, can increase level to make harder and just do some bicep curls curls, tricep extensions. Also to tricep dips (this will help bat/bingo wings), will need a high enough stable chair/sofa. For now do 12 reps with 30 sec rest and do that 3 times.
For the stomach, its a little trickier. Not to sound rude but do you have a muffin top? and have you had children? If you have a muffin top, you will need to do some cardio to fat burn. Its no good doing 200 crunches a day as you will have a nice toned stomach but the fat will hide it. Cardio is fat burning and crunch is toning so need to do both. Don't just do sit ups as you will need to work the differnt parts of the stomach muscles, lower abs and obliques etc.

I hope this is making sense, if you want I can send you some pics of exercsises for you to do. It will take a few days though.

    Hey vickie :)
H2b is really into fitness so he should have some weights I can use :) this is going to sound really stupid lol but what's a tricep dip??
I haven't had any children and no I don't have a muffin top. My stomach's quite flat but I want it to be toned. What would you advise?
Thanks so much for your reply :) xxx

Hey Ive been doing toning exercises in the house. I got a DVD which is 10 minute tone up - it was only a fiver from am-azon. It has a 10 minute section on Arms, Tummy, Thighs and Bum. Its not very easy at first but after a couple of goes its quite good :-)

Wicked, I have put a link on your wall what a tricep dip is utube video. Very good at targeting back of the arm.

Toning stomach should be pretty easy then but you will need to put the effort in and its not easy. If you want I can devise a plan for you (with pictures) in the next few days, H2B should be able to help you if you are unsure of a certain exercise.

Forgot to mention, whats the diet like? Make sure you are getting roughly 2 litres of water a day (if not drinking that much increase slowly). Cut back on carbs, ie bread, pasta etc as these can make you feel bloated and sluggish but you need carbs for energy.

I'd say my diet was okay. I eat quite healthily with lots of vegetables, but I do eat quite a lot of carbs so I could cut back on them.
I think I drink enough water as I don't really drink fizzy drinks so I only drink water (apart from coffee) xxx

Rockabilly - Well done on the toning but you need to mix it up a little as your muscles will remember exercise so you stop feeling it and get less out of it in the end. xx

Hiya Vickie, I wonder if you would be able to help me, I am just getting my diet under control, i want to lose 4 stone in the next year, I have a cross trainer at home, but I live in a very small village a long way from anything. I have another problem medical this time lol none of my joints fit into each other properly which means I cannot do anything high impact like i can't do any running as my ankles click and i am out of action for the next hour until i can recover. I also have huuge thighs and arms and would love to get these under control too. Is there any advice/help you could give me?

The DvD is quite thorough - there s few different ones. Its the 10 minute series 'Ten Minute Solution - Target Toning' its called, you can get it on ama-zon for £4. I do go for big walks as well as the DVD though. Me and H2B have started going rambling (I know it sounds like its for old folk lol) cos we live in Scotland and there loads of gorgeous hills to climb :-)

Joanna- I can PM you the exercises over, was going do it all in word for you with pics though.

Roberta- Have messaged you in detail.

Rockabilly- That is a good DVD if it has a variety of exercises. Nothing wrong with rambling, love going taking the dog for a walk up the mountains. Have invested in a pair of walking sticks but haven't had a chance to use them properly as I have had a chest infection.

Fern- Any activity you do is 'exercise' walking up a flight of stairs, doing the gardening, putting hoover over, carrying shopping. It still is working the muscles, so say if your carrying shopping, just do a few reps to really work the muscles. When your with kids, obv it depends on their ages but take them to the park, kick a football around, take the kids for walk, have a picnic, go blackberry picking. Just doing bursts of running with the kids is working the muscles, raising the heart rate. If you are walking, try power walking a little bit (if you have a pram), make a game out of it with kids, jog for a bit, then walk. Get the kids involved especially with this fab weather.

Bobsi- All I can say is more the merrier lol. I enjoy helping people, have always been active and love fresh air and helping people make small changes into their lifestyle.

some of the stuff we do at bootcamp could be useful for you ladies as it doesnt require any equipment.

Bex- Have you had a c-section? If you have a baby belly, you will need to do some cardio to fat burn. Its no good doing 200 crunches a day as you will have a nice toned stomach but the fat will hide it. Cardio is fat burning and crunches is toning so need to do both. Don't just do crunches as you will need to work the different parts of the stomach muscles, lower abs and obliques etc. Cut back on carbs, ie bread, pasta etc as these can make you feel bloated and sluggish but you need carbs for energy, main energy source. if you eat bread cut back to few slices a week. Make sure you are getting roughly 2 litres of water a day (if not drinking that much increase slowly). Water will help sustain hunger (if you think your are hungry, try having a glass of water, if it goes away, you weren't really hungry, if not eat). Water will also help you to burn fat more efficiently. Make sure you are having 3 meals a day, no skipping breakfast or lunch, because you are too busy. If you skip, when you next eat the body will store it , as it won't know when its getting next meal. Can send you over some stomach exercises?

Lows- Would love to climb kilimanjaro. Sounds awesome, trip of a lifetime.
Boot camp is fab but hard, it will be worth it. I set up a class at my old job and its got even better. Want to set up an outdoor one around here but haven't had chance yet. Pretty much everything I will suggest will be in the boot camp. Is it interval training based?

Forgot to say KETTLEBELLS, join your local kettlebell class, they are fab, will tone everywhere and give you a cardio workout at the same time.

cupcake_katie we do something similar at bootcamp but start of in a plank then raise on leg the swap legs. this helps the lower abs but also engages the whole core as you are maintaining the plank.

I'll definitely be bookmarking this thread!

Hi Mcquire- congrats on the jogging, takes a lot of effort. Did you do the whole 2 miles jogging or was it walk run? How did you warm up/cool down. What part of your legs are aching most? Have to remember first few times are a bit of a shock to the system and the muscles as they are not used to it. When are you planning to go again? Keep stretching after work out. I am also a sports and massage therapist and advise after a run to have a cold bath only for a couple of minutes. This will help reduce swelling, help muscles heal quicker and prevent DOMS. DOMS is delayed onset muscular soreness and can be from with 1 hr to 72hrs after exercise, its the achy feeling you get after exercise. Basically when you exercise the muscles produce a waste products called lactic acid, cold baths and stretching after exercise will help reduce the lactic acid therefore reducing DOMS in the the muscles.

I hope that makes sense, def rest, have another try tomorrow. Rest is all part of the training as muscles can become overworked and then you get tired, ill, drained etc.

Hi Vickie! I'm going to jump on this bandwagon, hope you dont mind! I have a baby belly (natural birth - no surgery) and would like to get rid of this. I used to do a lot of running which kept me fit, but dont really have the time now. H2B and I are setting up a home gym in the spare room and I was planning on getting a treadmill. Would i be better off with a cross trainer? I'd like to lose a bit of weight, and tone up as well as lose the baby belly! xx

Vickie - I've been looking into tabata training as I think my body has become too used to my usual workouts and I can mix it up more with tabata. Do you know much about it? I'm wondering if I can use it as cardio to get my heart rate up and then do my toning exercises? My concern is that a 4 minute workout doesn't seem long enough.

    I can't wait until 29/06/2013

Hi Vickie, thanks very much for the tips. On my first run i had a couple of breaks where i walked for a minute or two and i warmed up and down by stretching all the muscles through the body. I had a couple of days break and then ran again, this time i found i could run for longer and i didnt have much muscle ache the next day so something must be working! I took your advice about the cold bath too.. def seems to have helped! thank you once again x
