When we got engaged H2B bought me a ring and I wanted to get him a present too and he has loads of jewellry already so instead I got him 2 Oscar fish. Lovely little fish, about the length of my little finger. Since March they have grown. Lots. Now about the size of my hand. Lovely characters, same family as pirhanas so very interesting. However they have systematically eaten most of the other fish in our tank, started with the small ones and worked their way up to the medium sized ones. All that is left is the catfish which are about the same size. Oh dear. I had good intentions! The engagement present that has definitely gone a bit wrong, should have bought him some socks instead!

ahhh did the shop you brought them from not warn you?!! They are gorgeous fish just like you say come from the same family as pirhanas so will naturally eat anything smaller than them. He still has his engagement present you just dont have the rest of the fish! :( xx

Bless. You could always have two tanks. One for the fish eaters and one for the veggies.
I'd separate the fish - if the Oscars grow any more then they WILL devour the catfish too. With them being from the Piranha family I wouldn't put them with any other fish (if you decide to replace the ones that got eaten) it's asking for trouble :(

Nice idea to separate them but not really workable, the tank we have is HUGE, fills up one wall of the dining room! So might have to resign myself to the fact that poor catfish might be midnight snacks at some point. Shant go to the bother of replacing the ones that have been eaten, would be pointless!
The Oscars are very clever fish, they watch you as you walk around and respond to you, quite creepy. Apparently you can teach them to do tricks too. And they definitely prefer my partner to me, they get excited like little puppies when he comes home from work, very odd! And they dont like one of my daughters, they swim backwards away from her until they bump against the back of the tank.

My h2b boiled our fish, we had some tropical ones, names i cant remeber, every time we got new ones we made sure they would mix with the others, but once my h2b changed some of the water, and dont know why or what happend but must have turned the heater up coz he boiled them all. I was gutted, we havent had any since only some gold fish but they get to dirty, lol.... in the end he put them in his dads pond, he has loads in there!.

i'd of thought the place you brought the fish off would of warned you about the fact they would eat other fish smaller than them and they grow to the size of their environment. I used to keep all sorts of tropical fish and breed them if the place you brought them from didnt warn you they werent doing their job properly xx

They did mention that when they grew up they would be predators.... but we reckoned our other smaller fish would have died by then anyway due to their lifespan. They just grew up a bit too quick!

I love lion/scorpion fish - but i believe they live in tropical salt water and they are very very expensive.
Some how I think I'll stick with the 4 legged animals :)

Nope - he called them Penny and Punch. After Pennywise the clown in Stephen Kings IT, and Punch is short for Punchenello, some other sort of scary clown. He is odd my H2B....

OK... update time. 2 big fish have now become 1 big fish. Other one died as it got beaten up and bullied by other big fish. Other big fish looks very smug now. Almost has the whole tank to him/herself. I hope its satisfied.

i threatened to flush the last 4 fish h2b bought, they killed almost all fish smaller than themselves including my neons, i wasnt happy at all :( thankfully they have stopped now so no more deaths in a while but they still try to get the others. you best hope this 1 lasts awhile or h2b might expect another gift- and for you to replace the other fish lol xx
