    Hiya,

I got engaged two weeks ago and with it coming up to Christmas/New Year we are putting off our engagement party until Feb (seems like a better idea since we aren't planning on getting married until late 2015/2016.

The issue is that my family and my partner's family live 35 miles apart.

As people who may have had similar issues, do you have any advice for overcoming this?
Do we not have a party? Do we pick somewhere in the middle and put on buses (expensive was my first thought!) or do we pick one area and just put one bus on? My issue is I know that if it is not in my area then I feel a majority of my extended family won't go.

Any advice is welcome :) x

    I had a similar issue.
My family live in Aberdeen, OHs in Newcastle. We are getting married in Newcastle and chose Newcastle as our engagement party. My parents travelled down to be there and stayed with my mums relatives, who came also.
No one grumbled as far as I know, or at least not to me.
If people want to be there then they will make the effort.

I'd you pick somewhere in the middle don't put on buses!!!
They can make their own way there!! 15 miles in a taxi is £30-£40?! 4 people can share for £10 each and have 2-3 months to prepare for it,
Don't put yourself out, as I say - if they want to be there then they will make the effort

    Xxx

We have these sorts of problems too.... We live in Canterbury, OH's family are in Surrey and I'm from Dorset/Devon border but the girls on here suggested to maybe have a small meal/celebration each end and hope as many can come as possible! :) xxx

Just had a nosey at your post there. So was it a meal you went for then?
I can see me going for the same kind of thing, did you pay for the meal yourself? x

I had a similar issue, I'm originally from the West Midlands but now live in suffolk, all my family including my parents still live in the midlands. My oh family and all our friends live in suffolk so we had drinks at the quay with friends and two deprecate meals with the family.

I know our distance is 190miles so is further than yours.

Is it possible that you could choose a venue half way? X

have your engagement party where you want to have it. if people dont want to travel thats their problem. 35 miles really aint that far and no you dont need to put on buses or pay for everyones meal. engagement party is for a place where people can get together and celebrate your engagement. not for you to spend a fortune on getting people there. we had ours in a local pub. my MOH organised it for everyone and she even did some buffet style food and got her dad and uncle to sing with their guitars. the venue room in the pub was £100 in the end as we had to swap to a different pub and everyone just chipped in with the food so it was fairly cheap for the 50ish people that came. we didnt pay a penny for it x
