    Hi there,
I want to find venues that I am allowed to dress, find catering for and provide my own alcohol, so no package deals.
So far I've not found any place like this! I live around Manchester so somewhere in this region would be good. Does anyone have any ideas or even WHAT to google? I've tried loads but only come up on venues in the US :P

    help help

How far is Leigh sports village from you? They do weddings there - my friend has been to several works do's there and said the chef is great, the rooms are large with the sports boxes available to get ready in and is very reasonable in cost overall.
There are a handful of hotels literally across the road too, so that's pretty convenient.
Sure, it's not a traditional venue (with a rugby ground there) but it may tick your boxes? x

Also, change your Internet settings so it gives results from the UK only, that should help x

    Thanks for replies :)
Yes I have been looking at cottages licensed for ceremonies etc but everything seems to be very far away, like London. It's very dry up here :(

It's so hard that I want it to look either a certain way so I get that 'feeling' or a complete blank canvas. I've already looked for almost a year and if I don't want a dusty function room I seem to have to do the package deal :( But there is so many things that I don't want or need.

AmyK, I do have UK setting on but it doesn't come up anything useful and links keep on sending me very far away from the north west. I've tried googling "self catereing venues", "dry hire venues". The few alternatives that's coming up still wants to charge me over £5000 and then nothing is included :S hahah some venues are insane!

Have you looked on your local council website? They normally have a list of places registered for wedding ceremonies so maybe you would be able to find something on there? xxx

Have you looked at The Palm House in Liverpool you do have to use one of their 5 approved caterers but we are getting married there and found it to be much cheaper for us to do the food we wanted and we are buying alcohol ourselves and paying corkage x

Hi ok my reception is in Ireland but I just wanted to say I'm paying £200 for the use of two ballrooms in a big manor house. I negotiated this by asking for an evening only hire with no trimmings whatsoever apart from a buffet.

I am not supplying my own alcohol as they told me any alcohol served on the premises must be purchased from them and I'm fine with that as I'm paying for a champagne reception upon the guests entering but after that its a cash bar. I must hire my own bar attendants but I used to work in a hotel and I'm "Borrowing" two of their staff for the evening. Ok my venue isn't really a blank canvas, but it isn't a package deal either and its working out to be costing something like 1 fifth of what it would do If I had gone down the package route.

So my thoughts are open your range of prospective buildings up just a little bit. What about old school buildings, community centres, town halls? There's an old theatre near where I live that shut down last year and everytime I walk past it I keep thinking it would make a brilliant wedding reception venue because it has this massive changeable sign above the door and several function rooms. Imagine having yours and your fiance's name in lights above the front entrance door! Anyway sadly its nowhere near Manchester. So what about hiring an event room at a theatre? My brother hired a room in a theatre once to display his artwork, he had to supply his own alcohol for the day. Any theatres up around you where you can hire a function room?

HollyB42 - I looked at the Palm house as it does look amazing and I'm sure it was on don't tell the bride too?? But for a saturday hire alone in july 2014 it would be £3500 - and that is a little bit too much when no food, drink, decor or anything else is included. Our entire budget is £5000 and I do want to do a lot myself.
I have looked at some town halls - as some look great, but they too seem to have a set standard of included things - even though they come in at around £2500! It is a good deal with food and drink packages included. But the fronts of these town halls are just too plain :(

I'll-be-36 - I am trying to look for any kind of halls, establishments that look decent but it is hard coming up with something.

We do have some concerns, with we don't like rugs. Like these elaborate carpets that's everywhere, it needs to be a light or wooden floor. Also my man hates portraits on walls! Hahaha. And it need to be just a big room where, tables, dance floor and stage are set up all evening. I don't like it when guests has to clear the room for rearrangement.

Oh, and if a venue could allow me to ride in on a unicorn (up the aisle) that would help :P But we're trying to look for the basic things first!

I know what you mean it is expensive for just the hire although when I compared it to hotels etc for the sort of menu and drinks we are having it actually worked out cheaper!
I don't think the Palm House itself has been on dttb there's another similar venue called the Isla Gladstone on the other side of Liverpool that has though! We went to see that too and weren't half as impressed!x

Blushmia portraits on walls can either be taken down on the day by the management themselves or if its not possible to take them down you can cover them with something for the day provided that they are not absolutely covering the walls. You could have fabric draped over them or something.

For example in the entrance hall at the top of the stairs at my reception there is some really old taxidermy hanging on the wall. I asked the manager if its possible to take them down for the day but he said no as the wall would get damaged but we agreed with the management that I can temporarily cover them with a big table plan sign which my brother will erect earlier that day. I don't like taxidermy and I don't want any of the kids to get spooked out by them as they are rather "in your face" upon arrival.

You are restricting your options so much by wanting a certain type or colour of flooring. You have to go into this thinking you might not get exactly what you want and you may have to settle for a different type of flooring for example if all your other criteria is in place. I think you are restricting your possibilities a lot and if it has taken a year and no joy you may find yourselves having to drop a few things that you now deem as essential in your search criteria in order to get a decent reception venue.

My venue was not my first choice, nor was it my second, third, fourth, fifth in fact I lost count on how many venues I looked into before we settled on it. That was about 3 months of pure headache and stress and i found that compromising on some things that i wanted very easy in the end. I don't know how you have coped with looking for a whole year!
By the way, must it be a Saturday wedding? Aren't weekday weddings averaging a lot cheaper than Saturday weddings? Why not go back to that Palm House and ask how much it would be to hire on a weekday?

If you are wanting to do it all your self for budget reasons then dint rule out package deals. Mine is at a lovely hotel and is costing £2013 for ceremony room hire, wedding breakfast for 50 evening food for 100, dj and other extras. I have coated doing it myself and would work out much more.
