Myself and my OH went and booked our honeymoon last night, we booked a swim up room and we were really happy with what we got. But now i have gotten into work and have heard some horror stories about Egypt, can anyone tell me what its really like over there as we have never been before.
Have put a link on my wall for the hotel we have booked if anyone wants a nosey.

The only problem we had in egypt was when we went to the pyramids i found it quite difficult to avoid the street sellers and they can be quite nasty if you do try and avoid them.
Other than that we had a fantastic time
Your hotel looks gorgeous. I wouldnt worry i had to laugh when read the reviews of where we have booked our honeymoon. All people on the same week and the ratings are so different.

Only recommendation I've got is take LOADS of that alcohol hand sanitiser gel...my son's godfather went and got really nasty gastroenteritis!!! His tour guide recommended that stuff and he was ok for the rest of his holiday. Have a fab honeymoon though - always wanted to go to Egypt! x

We went to egypt last year, we went to cairo for 3 nights then 11 nights at sharks bay hilton in sharm.
Cairo was a dive - its such a shame as it could be great but as said above its a tourist trap - the city is horrid and dusty and you are at the constant mercy of people who try and scam you. H2b got really bad food poisioning in cairo even at a 5* resort
Sharm is a huge resort, with a wide range of hotels, you definitely get what you pay for and there are some god awful resorts. We had little problems where we stayed, food was good, wide variety, drinks available all night. We had slightly upset tummys most of the time, but nothing you couldnt manage, take some dioralyte and immodium just in case. It is extremely hot in june when we went, so being AI is a must as you drink sooooo much water. We were in a big resort where there was lots to do, but also lots of space so you could find somewhere quiet and private We had a great time, and would def go back to sharm
I think the reviews suffer from the african complex - the AI quality in africa is a lot lower than in the carribean or indian ocean and i dont think a 5star in egypt is comparable to those elsewhere, as there is a mix of people, some who always go AI and have high standards and those who just go to egypt as its more accessible and cheaper - there are also a mix of reviews. We had so much trouble deciphering trip advisor for egypt and have the same problem with our planned honeymoon to kenya :s

Another tip - as much as Im not a great fan of tipping for everything, if you make little tips often you will probably get an improvement in service - staff get paid very little and work 6-7 days a week long shifts so they do appreciate it.

i dint liek egypt but we went to hurgada, the hotel luks nice BUT the only thing i am gunna warn u about is ure all inclusive bar is only 10am til midnite and they dotn half sting u after we did this first time we ever went all inclusive and 2 halfs of lager was like £5, it worked out cheaper to buy a bottle of rum off the niteclub and cokee ( £5 each i tell u lol) i wud always go for a 24hr all inclusive x

Your hotel looks amazing! (Although some of the photos don't look real to me ... especially the "Fountain" one!)
We went to Luxor in October last year and it was fantastic. Other than the people on the street bugging you, of course ... and Dan said the men were really lecherous.
Dan got a bowel infection - but then he did have a dodgy looking salad at a rooftop restaurant, so it was his own fault really!

I've been to Egypt twice. The first time was in 2000, with my boyfriend at the time and 4 of our friends. I had a really nasy experience in the hotel, which I reported and the bartender got sacked for. then we took a day trip to Cairo on their night train, which was a real adventure! Cairo is a horrible city, really dirty, full of very pushy locals trying to get every last drop of money out of you and again, we got into a really dodgy situation with a company that was running camel and horse rides at the pyramids. We honestly thought we'd all die if we didn't hand over the 85egyptial pounds each they wanted. Having said all that, we went on a great boat trip up the nile to Dendehra(sp?) temple and got to watch the sun rise from the top of it and we got to go and see some of the most amazing sights ever (including the museaum of mumification!) and we've got some great stories to tell. Last time I went was with my H2B about 20 months ago for my birthday. We went to Sharm and got to go snorkelling (amazing - definitely do this!), quad biking (fab experience), went on a camel ride with bedoiun dinner and star gazing thrown in (got some great pics of me dancing with a young bedoiun boy who took a bit of shine to me). I felt a lot safer in Sharm, but I would still not go anywhere without my H2B. We went AI and I have to say that the booze was dire - all tasted the same and it was like paint stripper and the food was a bit samey - we had a laugh at the 'chicken in brown (sauce)' or 'chicken in darker brown (sauce)' that was generally on offer, so we mostly stuck to pizza and pasta as they were made fresh in front of us. I loved their chicken sausages though (obv. being a muslim country you won't get bacon out there), in fact I even miss them a bit LOL!
My advice would be don't go out of the resort on your own, and outside of the resort keep covered up - arms, legs and if going into a place of worship, your head too. If you're blonde, keep your head covered anyway - all the locals were facinated with mine and kept trying to touch it, which was mildly annoying. Hx

oh yes, my blond blue eyed friend said she was harrassed quite a lot by the locals. Me being chinese meant I wasn't really bothered ... but Dan did tell me that they all had a bl00dy good look!

Oh, and my boyfriend was offered 800 camels for me at the pyramids, which I thought was hilarious, but he wasn't taking any chances and told the guy firmly that I wasn't for sale and made a swift exit!

we went there for our honeymoon! i recognise the name of your hotel but cant remember where it was!
both me and ed got ill there. i came down with food poisining. they will tell you that it is the heat but i have been to countries hotter than egypt so i know it isnt!
make sure you have all your jabs at the docs. my cousins have just come back from egypt and they all had a dodgy belly as well. the weather is fantastic and you cant fault that. the food gets a bit boring too be honest and i couldnt find anything that i liked to drink so hadley touched alchohol!
make sure you haggle when buying things, most places take english money as well. take hand gel and use it everytime you touch money!
the workers in hotels are fine but if you go out the resort then they can be quite touchy but just shout no and they will leave you. dont book trips through your rep as they will rip you off. use local shops or people that walk around you pool!
cairo was good but they did try getting money out of us. and you do get hasseled and they kept trying to touch me, take photos for us. do not let them as they will charge you! they also put things under your arm but let them fall to the floor!
although we had a great 2nd week we wouldnt go back to egypt xx

forgot to mention that a lot of people told me before i went that blondes get hassled a lot so i actually went dark the day after the wedding, but still got hassled! xx

oh i love this thread, im going to eygpt in 3wks for my honeymoon. H2b has been twice before but its my first time there. I've got the gel and wet wipes(Toilet roll lol),jabs are done too. Some woman in the bank even told me when she went, she was continually asked if she was british and when she said she was AUSTRALIAN they left her alone. Gotta be worth a try lol x

I went on a nile cruise 4 years ago. I had a great time! A lot of people suffer from a bad belly, so be sure to take electrolyte replacement with as it really helps. Oh, and only drink bottled water! We got a lot of hassel in the markets and the best way to deal with it is to say very firmly Laa (we were told its Arabic for no). They tend to respond to that. (A tip from our tour guide). Have fun! Its a great country!

I went last year, I'm blonde and blue eyed but didn't get any hassle. Tbh I found the locals who worked in the hotels quite lazy, I had to go and ask them to clean a table in the restaurant and they started huffing and puffing - there was no where else for us to sit and in a 5* hotel I didn't expect that.
My h2b also got bad food poisoning - he had to go to hospital when he came back
I personally don't like the place, however there are nice hotels and if you take hand sanitisor and use it religiously you should be fine, stay away from fruit and salad that's been cut and left out.
CommentAuthorCheryl22
ohh some mixed reviews on here as well - i guess it all depends on the hotel and the service you get there. My mum went last year on honeymoon and she said it was fab although they went to a different hotel.
What jabs do you need to go? As i wasnt aware of any.
Thanks for the replies tho, any more info would be great x

yeh my mum and stepdad didnt have jabs either. They did take stomach tablets with them but never needed to use them either.
Yeh i just hope that the hotel is as good as it says on the website as we will be spending most of our time in the resort laying by the pool/beach. We are hoping to do a few of the excurisions, like the diving and the bedioun tour as we have heard that they are fab! x

We went to Sharm a few yrs ago and loved it. We are a really active couple so loved diving in the red sea and also quad biking in the desert. I agree with the anti-bac hand gel as the money is dirty over ther. We were in a gr8 hotel and the food and staff were excellent. We did meet a couple on a boat trip thou who said thy were served potatoes for breakfast every day lol. We have both said we would go back in the future. Jst make sure u carry ur anti-bac and u shud b fine xx

You should be fine, a lot of the trouble is away from the resorts but as always the markets are really busy so I'd maybe think about putting your rings in the safe when you go out, otherwise the market traders will never leave you alone!

My nan lives in egypt and I asked her about it - she has advised me that sharm is brilliant and to avoid hurgada but other than that she just said try not to get scammed money wise, though as I'm going in November it should be alot quieter ..... On a funny note she told me to bring a jumper as its one of the coldest months - 25 degrees in the day lol ! like a manchester heatwave :)

we went last year- i was dreading it due to all the stories i heard but apart from the food ( none of us 6 got food poisoning ) we all really enjoyed it and would go back, one bit of advice would be to take plenty of money as we found it to be quite costly in Sharm. It was honestly a lovely holiday- we stayed at the tirana sunrise , it was a water park x, u'll love it hun, try not to worry xx
