Well I ordered a dress off Ebay and although I loved the dress it was too light in colour for me. I was thinking about adding an overlay of a darker shade of chiffon, like a champagne colour or something but it was going to be pricey......so I thought I would try and dye it, what have I got to lose? I'm not going to wear it this colour so might as well try. They cost £4.59 each and the salt cost 49p, i got 2 dyes and 2 packs of salt.....if this works it will have cost £10.16....worth it if it works.....
First of all the dress is satin, chiffon and tulle, all polyester. Now I have been told that polyester is difficult to dye, and would probably only give it a hint of the colour you want, but as I only want a slight change, it sounds ok to me if its only slight, and bought 2 packs of DYLON......Pebble Beige.
I had to machine wash the dress first, on a 40 degree cotton wash, to get rid of any protective coatings.....then it was down to adding the dye to the washing machine drum.....
Here is my dress.....too 'White' for me, even though its Ivory, its still too pale a colour.

heres the dress during the pre-wash cycle.....
6854395364_1923f6efaf.jpg
then I added the dye and 500gm of salt to the drum

Added the dye and 500gm of salt.......and the dress while still wet...then held my breath ...I like the colour I can see, hope it doesnt fade too much with the rinsing.....but if it does i will just do another dye cycle...you can see the colour difference next to my white washing machine..

its still in the machine so will post more later......

oooooh its on its last rinse, but then I have to put it through a wash cycle with washing powder, I suppose that sets the colour? I just hope it doesnt wash the colour out! I will drag the dress out before I do to see how it looks....
oh dear.......I dont know whats happened but I can see through the door.......the beige has gone back to white, and the tulle has turned a lovely shade of purple! PURPLE???? oh well I tried. i dont know WHY its purple though.
cant wait to get it out the machine and check it out.....I am in 2 minds whether to complain to the dye company......OK if it didnt work, but PURPLE? ya gotta laugh really ......

It looks like only the tulle has turned purple, so if the rest of it is OK i will just replace the tulle on the skirt , or even just add it over the top, and I already have some of that. (i did want a pop of colour but not quite that much! ) LMAO!

not sure. Ebay have found in favour of the seller! but I have appealed against the decision, not holding out much hope though.
Dont know whether to add layers to the skirt, or to make one.....I didnt want to because I always thought it was bad luck, but I didnt have too much luck the other way did i? I quite fancy having a corsett top and long skirt.....THEN i could also have a shorter 50s style skirt with petticoats to change into at night......sort of two outfits in one , i would also be able to wear the top again with something else........waddaya think?

CommentAuthorElle23
That sounds like a plan!!! Im sure the shorter skirt would be fairly easy to make (for you clever ladies who know how! I cant even sew on a button!!!!) There must be corset style tops you could buy fairly reasonably? Do places sell them separately?

I am watching a really nice one on the bay, its £16 at the minute. its an oyster colour, and with that I wouldnt mind an ivory skirt....Ivory???? but i couldnt wear a dress that was completely ivory......
TBH, yesterday I was quite chipper, I even laughed when i dyed the dress and it came out wrong, .....but today I feel very flat , and dissapointed and feeling really down about it....I have no dress.

CommentAuthorElle23
Bless you, after all your effort re the China dress too...... Hope the corset is yours and looks wonderful! I know you didnt want to make your own but if you've the skill, it would be bespoke and exactly how YOU wanted it!! Your a clever lady! Plus if you get the corset, you would not be making your wedding dress, you would be making an ivory skirt!! Look at it that way! xx

If I had your skills I would be making mine! The bridesmaid dresses are amazing! Good luck with the auction x

Thank you.....I am thinking that if I do make a skirt i will make it out of Ivory Taffeta, and make it with box pleats to match the bridesmaids. I am going to try to buy the bodice anyway, and even if i dont use it its really nice and would look great with jeans.....and if i go up to £20 ......well what can you get for £20? its an oyster satin with ivory lace, with pearls sewn onto it....really nice. it would really look nice with an ivory skirt......

its brill you see the funny side of this. I must admit I cringed when I saw the title of the thread and thought oh no, but it was too late. You have given me a nice laugh though after the bit of a pooey day I have had but I do feel bad that you now dont have a dress. You just couldnt make it up though, such a random colour! I truely hope you get something sorted. How dear was the dress? Can you buy another one and just keep it white?
