We need to decide asap what to do regarding our drinks reception, as our venue need to know if we want the bar to open early.
We get married at 4pm & are due to arrive at our reception venue around 5pm, at the moment the bar is set to open at 7pm.
We cant decide wether to have the bar open earlier around 5-5:30pm & have everyone buy there own drinks, or open early & put money behind the bar to cover 1 drink each. Our 3rd option & H2B's favourite (as he gets the cooler he wants!!) is to buy this cool box

We would fill this with beer, cider, soft drinks & wine, enough for 2 drinks minimum each for less then if we were to buy everyone a drink at the bar (inc cooler cost). The only downside to this is someone would need to go to the venue before the church to fill it with drinks & ice, but H2B doesn't think this will be an issue!!
Also with the bar option our drinks reception will be at the back of the building in the gardens (for photos), so going to the bar involves a little trek as the bar is at the furthest point from the garden, so might be a pain for people carrying a few drinks.

I'd offer arrival drinks but have the bar open from the time you get there.

I'd have the bar open for 5 personally and let people buy their own. We are having one glass of champers on arrival, hotel has allowed free corkage on this so we will be buying cheap bubbly. People may take advantage of the cool box and grab lots. It looks cool though

I'm worried about this with the bubbly but have been advised a member of staff will be at the drinks table at all times pouring it etc so should be fine

People taking extra didn't even cross my mind, that's a good point.
I really wanted to hire a pimm's trike but there's only one that covers our area & there already booked :(
I wonder if our venue would be willing to do jugs of pimms? I think i'll email them & ask.

It's not you typical wedding venue though! It's a posh school (set in an old mansion) they only hold 6 weddings per year during the summer holidays, the bar staff are all teachers, but it wont hurt to ask.

I'd open the bar early and guests can buy their own drinks.

I know of weddings where some guests take advantage and get so many drinks other guests actually get none. If everyone buys their own then there is no chance of taking the p155 and you also don't have to shell out.

I would also have the bar open for people arriving and let them buy their own drinks, maybe put on some pimms for them if you want
