Ok so I'm about to step into the caotic world of dress shopping for me and my maids and wondered whether a) the following sounds like a good plan and b) if there are any tips, bits of advice or glaringly obvious things you're supposed to do that I don't know about :)

So I was thinking about making 1 or 2 appointments for a day next week as my MOH (sister) will be in town and my other maids want to go bridal dress shopping with me once before I graduate and leave Glasgow :) I believe you're not supposed to make too many appointments for one day and you should leave a certain amount of time between each so you can go have tea and discuss etc. How long should you give between appointments? I was going to wear full plain white underwear and easy to change in and out of clothing but are their any other suggestions? I read somewhere that a bottle of water is essential! lol

As for maid dress shopping do you need to make appointments? we were going to look in some normal high street shops like monsoon as well but for places like dessy stockists do you normally book an appointment? We weren't planning on buying any dress for them on the day but thought it would be a good oportunity to see what colours suit who and what styles and then give them (limited) free reign to pick by themselves at a later date.

Does this sound sensible? Am I trying to fit too much into one day? What should I do with my hair?

Thanks for any advice you guys are great!

Personally I think looking for bridesmaids dresses will be difficult as a day isn't a lot, and it will be quite time-consuming esp if there's no set colour/style scheme; I'm nowhere near the dress stage and won't be for a LONG time, but we planned to spend a weekend looking for their dresses, and I'll get mine on another occasion. Like you I'm basically giving them free reign and they can each choose a different colour and style if they want (within reason) so I think this will take time. And if you don't plan on buying them, then I think even less reason to look. Trying on dresses for you will take time: they can take a while to get in and out of, plus there'll be loads to look through so you could be browsing for an hour before picking something to try.

In terms of hair, I would wear it in a similar way to how you plan to have it on the day eg if you want it loose, wear it loose, if you plan on wearing it taken up, try to take it up so you get a rough idea of how it'll look.

I would also bring a camera to take photos so you can go away and look after, in your own time.

I would make 2 appointments: one first thing, then one early afternoon, as this will give you enough time at each, with chance for a sandwich in between

Relax, its all gonna be OK. For your dress you can make appointments with different shops on same day if you like, my appointments have lasted about 1h or so as I know before entering the shop which dress I wanted to try on, so if you manage to schedule a few in a day why not, as for bm dresses in bridal store, I can't help you on that one, but when you call shops for yourself why don't you ask the lady if your bm can try dresses on as well, I am sure it is possible. You don't have to buy dress on day you got plenty of time, and for yourself, try as many as you like, so you make an informed decision. and most of all enjoy the day it will be one of the happiest of your life (coming after THE BIG DAY).

Wear a strapless bra but hold on to it for dear life when they are taking the dress off or you may just lose it. I think two appointments in one day is fine but I would limit who you take with you when you first go. Other people can over whelm you and cloud your judgement. Take along someone you know will be calm and sensible. Also don't plan for them to be trying on dresses with you. You want to be able to concentrate on how you look not what they look like.

You don't need to book appointments for high street stores but you may well do for the bridal shops if they are trying on in there.

Also make sure you try on dresses that you don't like on the hanger as they look completely different on and you need to try on every shape to find out what works best for you. Once you know what shape flatters you the most you can then look for dresses of that style in the details that you like.

Also take a hair brush and some spare deo as it can get very hot swapping into big dresses with all the lights in the shop etc.

Oh also never buy there and then in excitment. If you find your dress well done but don't pay for it there and then. Give yourself a week or so and then go back. If you are still sure it is the one then leave again. Go home and ring around the shops to find who sells it at the best price and for the best alterations costs. Once you have done that go back again and try it on. Its a big commitment that you want to get right so don't rush into ordering it. Bridal shops will try and take advantage of your emotions at the time so step back before you make your mind up completely. You will also find they are more willing to drop the price if you are ringing up shop to shop for a price as they know you are savy and won't take the first price that comes along.

i agree with the take a step back and try the dress ona couple of times because you might fall out of love with it or find one somewhere else cheaper or even one that you love better!! And dont let them talk you into anything!! I speak from experience!! x

I'd like the bms in pink and yellow but I'm open to alterations you see if they look hideous in pale pink and buttermilk then we'll have to see what they do look good in :) it's the one chance I will get to see what colours look good on them and I'm not seriously looking into find THE dress yet but as I'm the first in my friends to get married I kinda promised I would let them take me dress shopping before I move countries :)

So far I've book one appointment for me in the morning and then the afternoon (after a 'ladies what lunch' moment) can be spent looking at different styles and colours on them:) I think this plan should work :)

    thanks everyone!
