Hi , I'm new to this forum, wedding planning etc. and I really need some help with my dress. I don't get married for another year, but on my first trip to a wedding dress shop - I bought a sample sale dress, the third wedding dress I have ever tried on. I have shocked everybody, including myself but It's by my preferred designer, it fits perfectly (no alterations needed) i absolutely love it, everyone who came with me loved it and my mum cried.
It is however completely different to what I wanted, I originally thought I would have chosen a fitted style, but I have bought a lace and chiffon A-line/ball gown style dress.
The problem is, I cannot walk in it. It's huge, i'm wearing flats on the day, the dress is floor length and all the material loves wrapping itself around my feet. I don't want to shorten it too much as i love the effect with the train. A work colleague mentioned a hoop, I have no idea what a hoop is. Google didn't really help. I saw one on an auction site that looked like a large petticoat, before i buy one, is that what i need or has anybody got any other wonderful suggestion?

Hi, welcome to the site! I've got the same problem with my dress, the underskirts catch on the heel of my shoe and feel like they're wrapping round my legs so I can't walk in it, so I've just bought a hoop skirt. My friend who's shortening my dress thinks it will help the dress hang better too. I got mine from the bay of E, it's a single hoop skirt, just one layer of fabric and the hoop is adjustable too, is this the sort of thing you were looking at? Xx

That sounds like what was on on sale on the bay of E, but I didn't see that they were adjustable, which is why I wan't sure whether they were for wedding dresses. Thank you for the re-assurance. I will order one now. xxx

Hi Mrs Law, welcome.
I will be wearing a hoop with my dress as it sits better with the hoop, the hoop will keep the underskirts away from your legs and allow you to walk better, the shop my dress is from hires them out, so you might be worth asking them if its something they offer. They do come in different styles so they can hopefully let you try a few different types to see what you like best xx

I would speak to a seamstress. If you shorten the length it should not affect the train. A hoop does sound needed for that style dress. Mine was fit and flare so hard petticoat layers at the bottom to give my feet space, when it was the correct length walking was no problem at all, and I had a decent length train.
If you contact the shop you bought your dress from they will advise you on what kind of hoop you need. Mines told me to get it on the bay as it's a lot cheaper but does the same job

I'm having a hoop as it just helps kick out the skirt on my dress away from my legs (which helps to keep cool) and away from my shoes so I don't tread on it.
There are lots of different types of underskirts and hoops that could help so I would go back to the shop and try some on with your dress and see what works best. You can get tulle underskirts which help but the extra layers of fabric may make you really hot. Others have several hoops down the skirt gradually getting bigger to the floor. Mine is just a single hoop with a small point of fabric to hold the train out. X
