Hi all, really need to share this and ask if anyone has any suggestions. Heard from my venue yesterday (that we booked 2 months ago) that they have double booked our wedding and as the other couple booked in January they get the date. So now we have no wedding date or venue, we have photographers booked (with non-returnable deposits paid), all my save the dates have been handmade and sent out.

So at a loss I am completely gutted. We have a meeting with the general manager on monday who reckons he is going to try sort it out but at the end of the day we cant have the venue and date we wanted and booked. And also how have they not noticed for 2 months that its a double booking. I think they possibly only noticed when I went and questioned something about the menu last week. I'm so angry and want to know what you guys think I should use as bargining power.

They have offered us a marquee on the same day in the field next to the hotel but neither of us want a marquee and also we picked that hotel because we liked the venue which we wouldn't get. Another attraction of this hotel was that we were promised we would be the only wedding there that day and now they are prepared to have 2 on a day which is not what we were promised, or what I'm sure the other couple were promised. We would be fobbed off with the 2nd best DJ, no honeymoon suite, no area for breakfast the next day, sharing the photograph garden which will mean we dont get time for all we want.

    Its such a nightmare. xx

Oh huni, how awful. I would be totally fuming!!

Is there no other venue you like that you could try and get booked? I always say everything happens for a reason. Maybe you wasnt meant to have this venue and there is somewhere else out there that will be perfect for you x

oh that's such a pain but don't panic. have a look round and see if any other hotels will jump to the occasion tell them what you have been offered and see if they can beat it for you.
and if you have to go for the less desirable way make sure you milk it for all you have got as much free stuff and money off as possible take any receipts bouchers and contracts that you have made with the hotel in with you.

Oh how horrible...Could you see if there is a date near to your original date available? And then make the hotel pay for redoing your save the dates etc..seeing as it was their fault? Good Luck on this and don't settle for second best! xx

This sort of happened to a friend of mines daughter who was rung up by her venue a few months before her big day to say a celebrity wanted to get married in the same venue that same day and would she swap (this is a true story by the way!) The daughter declined as everything was all sorted. Hotel rang her back saying if she swapped to the following week they would do the whole wedding for nothing (bear in mind this was a £25,000 venue - incredibly posh). Obviously the prestige of having the celebrity wedding there and OK and Hello magazine etc and all that promotion was worth the £25,000. Anyway, after much consideration the daughter decided it was worth it and changed the date. Then a few weeks later she got a lovely letter in the post from the said celebrity saying thank you for making the change and she included a personal cheque for £50,000! Dont think that would happen with the venue we are having. I suppose the moral to this tale is see what the hotel can offer you in recompense - haggle with the price, free food, free entertainment, half price venue the following week? Its their mistake, they should give you a good deal to make up for it.

Thanks for your support guys. We do have insurance so we wont lose out on the photographer but I doubt they'll pay for our homemade stationary.

We have a meeting with the general manager on Monday and we will be fleecing them for all we can get if we do decide to stay there. The only alternative dates that they have offered are not really suitable at the minute, but they are all after our wedding was going to be, so we are going to check if they have anything earlier. I know they dont have June thought because we originally wanted around then.

And man I wish it was a celebrity stealing my wedding. I would be so happy then to make that much money. Spending this weekend researching other venues and how much we can take them for ready for the meeting on monday. I'll keep you all posted with what happens. Keep any suggestions coming in.

    Thanks xxx

Yes we have insurance and yes we have signed contracts. My H2b also checked out the CAB but they are only open 9.30-12.30 mon-fri and we both work and he couldnt get through on the phone. We've done everything by the book so it would be them in breach of contract if it were ever to go that far. They have offered us a marquee on the same day so I'm looking into how much that would cost as say that we dont want it but we want the wedding on a different day but I want the price of the marquee knocking off my price. Doubt we'll get it but we can try.

I'll let you know how we get on. xxx

If they have made the mistake then they should be paying for your deposits if you can't get the same date at another venue or they can't change the date to your new date. They made the mistake. They should pay for it.

Well here is my update. The manager apologised lots and we are basically rearranging our date and moving it forward a month. Just now waiting to see if the church can do the new proposed date then we are having another meeting with the general mager to discuss compensation for having to change the date etc. A friend of mine works in hotels and she said i should ask for 10% off the menu plus extra drink for each guest and an upgrade on the honeymoon suite so thats what i'll be goin in with when we meet up with the general manager again later this week.

I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else as its a pain having to reorganise everything.

Seeing as they messed up big time I dont think asking for 10% off meals would be anywhere near enough compensation, that would be letting them off far too lightly if you ask me! If you had decided to sue them for breach of contract they would be stung for a lot more than that!

We got the church and photographer rearranged so we have now booked the wedding for 11th June! A month earlier, which is pretty exciting. Not managed to arrange second meeting with the manager yet but i am thinking I'm going to go in at 15% off the meals plus the other stuff and hopefully get at least 10% plus extras. Its not really enough but we still get a summer wedding at the venue we wanted at what may actually end up being a better date (I'm feeling positive it will be sunny!!)

It was my H2B that called the manager today to confirm the new date and Chris said the manager sounded relieved so I'm hoping he will be prepared to give decent compensation.

Thanks for the good wishes girls and I will keep you posted. xx

10 or 15% seems rather meagre. I'm all for hamming it up and getting loads of freebies out of them, whats your hourly rate/how long has it taken to make each card/ time spent/ chance guests can't make it.

Don't forget you could always change the venue and demand a refund on the deposit, that way they'd be making nothing! Its to their advantage to give you a fair compensation amount, better for them to make something rather than nothing and have the bad press to go with it!

Thanks for that Rags. I need to keep fired up for our meeting (now on thursday) where we will be sorting that sort of thing out. At the end of the day its their fault and its us who have been done wrong. I will work it out at an hourly rate and add that to my bill. We'll see what he is going to offer and then barter from there I think, as I'd hate to go in at 15% then find out later he would have offered 20% or something like that!
