Hi everyone, I haven't been about for a few days so hope everyone's well, plans are coming along nicely and congratulations to anyone who got married this weekend!

My family have had quite a rough few days, my sister had her baby friday evening and although we're over the moon to have our little princess the whole things turned into a nightmare. The baby is beautiful and was born healthy and my sister although had an awful pregnancy she was feeling good but in the most horrendous pain. They were both sent home from hospital Saturday evening (without being checked over, the baby didn't have any checks at all) and on sunday morning were both rushed back into hospital.

My sister has no use of her legs, bladder, bowels.. all she can feel is pain. She can't move at all and has been stuck in bed since sunday morning. She finally had an x-ray this morning and her pelvis is broke, the doctor think's it happened during labour and most likely the force of the forceps and the baby, she had problems during pregnancy with her pelvis and we learnt today that forceps should of never of gone anywhere near her because of this.. anyway, she's looking at anything upto a few months in hospital having pysio in hope she can get back on her feet again and then anything upto a year in a brace to hold her pelvis together and can it fix it's self.

The baby is in the newborn intensive care unit, she's severely jaundice but is also fighting off an infection, the nurses have done a lumber puncture and we should hopefully know what the infection is in the next 48 hours. She's in an incubator, all wired up but she's finally been allowed on the ward with my sister, they've moved her into a side room so she can have Lola there as my sister has been without her since sunday and wasn't able to move to get down to see her.

It's all been vert heart breaking, what should be the most amazing time has turned into a nightmare but we've got Lola-Mae and that's all that matter, we know they will both be better soon its just a waiting game.

At the moment we're considering cancelling or putting the wedding on hold. My sister is a bridesmaid but won't be able to get into her dress and she's worried she won't be able to walk the aisle, I just can't imagine getting married without her. My parents were also contributing to the wedding alot and without there help we don't think we'd be able to manage everything we are having. My mum is having to give up work and become my sisters carer and help with the baby etc.

Everything is a bit of a mess but I really don't care about the wedding at the moment. I just want the girls to be better

wow what a hell of a ride to hell and back you have all been on, firstly congratulations on a niece. secondly concentrate on helping your sister and niece get well soon and like u said bac on her feet, i really hope they both have a full recovery. thirdly when this is settled abit more she needs to see about puttin a claim in as this is out of order sendin a baby home without a check up is totally bang out of order, and for them not to know in your sisters notes the problem she has is inexcusable and for her to be sent home been in the pain she is in.

try keep strong and help get them threw this dont cacel the wedding just give it a few weeks to see how things progress then take it from there as to weather to postpone or cancel x

Wow, this is incredible, in the worst possible way. I can't believe that no checks were done on either your sister or your niece! I think that the decision to postpone or go ahead with the wedding really has to be yours and your H2B's decision. Only you know how you feel about it. I have no words of advice other than that, I'm afraid. Sending well wishes to both your sister and niece and hoping for a speedy recovery. Hugs to you too babe Hx

It's been the worst few days of our life's, it's horrific.

She's been in hospital since sunday and only got an x-ray this afternoon, it's like they didn't want the x-ray to be done so we didn't get answers that prove they caused the problem. My sister told them her pelvis didn't seem right but they gave her pain killers, put her in a wheelchair and sent her home, it wasn't until the pain killers wore off she really knew something wasn't right. Her midwife came round that morning, took one look at her and said she needed to be at hospital asap, then went on to take a look at the baby and got straight on the phone for an ambulance. Lola was orange! Midwife said she should of never of been let home especially because of the labour, she had the cord round her neck 4 times and it was a dry birth, there wasn't any fluid left in my sister so she was open to infection and this is exactly what's happened.

It's just so bad and I can't think straight. The wedding is the last thing on my mind, I just can't imagine doing it without my sister walking down the aisle with me and we don't know how the baby will be. She's not been awake since sunday :-(

Nope, she's just sleeping. She woke up this morning for about 5 minutes but she was having her blood taken so I expect that's why. She's just so tired and weak, it's horrible. She's 4 days old and been through so much already. She's with her mummy now but still under the care of NICU, so put them both in a side room together so they can treat her and not disturb other mums!

Awww that is horrible!! Feel so bad for you and your family. I had spd and didn't give birth til 2 days after water broke and I also had forceps, the pain was horrendous specially as they couldn't give me strong painkillers cos of my stomach ulcer. My daughter was rushed to hospital too after four days as she was severely jaundiced and lost the normal weight babies lose from when they were first born. Didn't know my milk hasn't gone thru so didn't know my baby was starving for 4 days. But they are resilient and little fighters, let's hope that lola (beautiful name btw) recuperate very quickly. I remember just after two days of constant checks and formula feeding in the hospital she became so much better. Hope lola kicks the infection off her asap.

As for your sister omg, I can only imagine how awful she feels! I can't believe the hospital not checking her up specially the baby as the first 24 hours is the most crucial. Is it spd as well that she had? Hopefully she responds to the therapy quite quickly.

Completely feel for you about losing interest in the wedding for now. I hope everything turns out better quickly though not only for your wedding so you don't have to cancel but most specially so baby and mummy can both enjoy their time together asap. My thoughts and prayers are with them xx

Thanks everyone, your messages mean alot.

Lola was taken out of her incubator yesterday and we were all over the moon but only couple of hours later she was back in it again and we felt awful, she's been taken out again this evening and is a cot but we're worried she'll be back in again :-( it's hard to get our hopes up!

She took 30mils of milk through a tube into her stomach without being sick which is awesome! But she still hasn't woke up still, the nurse reckons it's the antibiotics making her weak. Still no sign of her lumber puncture results though

My sister has been alot happier this evening, having Lola in her room has really helped but she hates not being able to get out of bed and change her nappy etc but she has loads of help. She's been given morphine tonight to help her sleep and the midwifes on ward will see to Lola.

Doctor came round this evening and said the pelvis has literally split in half :/( now trying to decide if an operation will help and whether she will get control of her bladder and bowels back, they can't work out why a pelvis break would do that, so it's all still very confusing!

Weddings on hold, we aren't going to cancel but we won't book anything else or even think about it for the next month or so, just until my sister and the baby are home and then decide from there. They are all that matters at the moment, no one and nothing else.

    xx

I would sue the hell out of that hospital if i was your sister/family!!! Sending a baby home with no checks at all when shes clearly unwell if shes ended up in an incubator etc.!! And how can they possibly not notice a broken pelvis?? Especially one so severe!!! Your sister was obviously not checked out at all either! I'd be naming and shaming the hospital in the papers and sueing them for every penny tbh!! That is absolutely disgusting care!!!! Big hugs xx

We've been documenting everything so we can get a case together. My other half spoke to the solicitor today and she thinks there is definitely a case to sue them with. Steve rang head of maternity services and complained that they hadn't done an X-ray yet and later that day a midwife from the ward had ago at my sister saying "we're doing everything we can for you stop complaining" so we won't do anything now, keep our mouths shut and complain when she's home! It's horrible she gas to stay there though, just wish we could mice her x

As we are going through a medical negligence claim at the moment again over a birth but unfortunately it resulted in a maternal death my advise is to contact a solicitor now even if you dont end up taking this further as they can advise you of all the information you need to collect. It is also worth keeping a diary of events and detail the problems she had before the birth regarding her pelvis etc. It is easier to do when its all fresh in your minds. Take notes on who says what also. Hope they both get better soon xx

so sorry to hear your news. this hospital sounds awful. what hospital doesnt check over mum and baby before they go home? i agree with loubyscooby you need to speak to a solicitor and see what they say.

you still have a while to the wedding so maybe not make any more plans and see how your sister goes in the next 4-6 weeks and then make a decision on that.

    xx

The hospital she's in is the Royal United Hospital in Bath, although it's a great hospital they have made mistakes and instead of helping to fix it it feels like they are just trying to cover there tracks. We've since learnt that the hospital is known for sending babies and mums home without being checked over, it's such a busy ward they just try and discharge people asap.

We've spoke to a solicitor for advice and she told us we can definitely sue. At the moment we are just noting everything down etc and we've been taking copies of her notes. We won't do anything until she is home though, we want her to be relaxed and not under stress from anything else.

But so far baby and mummy are feeling a little better today. Lola had a feed through a bottle and my sister is waiting to start her pysio today, her consultant thinks she's ready for it so I suppose that's a good sign.

We definitely aren't going to cancel the wedding but at the moment the planning is on hold just till we know how things are going to be.

    Fingers crossed!

ok sorry its taken me so long to reply, iv been crying due to my own bad memories!

they have no right to have a go at her for complaining i suggest putting a sign on the door stating you are audio recording things and use a dicterphone to record with plenty of batteries. i would say not to tell them but unless they are made aware you cant use it as evidence in court, even if you put it on door, take a photo of it as evidence that they were warned then remove it from door.

as for lola, both my boys were severely jaundiced, xander my eldest was under the lights for ages then taken out and put back under it was changed every 6 hrs! but we argued for 3hrs straight with the head of peadiatrics to let us take him for a walk round the nearby park for a few hours to get him natural sunlight. they finally agreed and we took him for a walk , more to the point i held him whilst dean pushed my wheelchair. once he had natural sunlight he was fine! two weeks under their lights compared to 4hrs in natural light. worked wonders! he was able to go home providing we took him for tests everyday.

on the other hand, dante my youngest, had low sugar levels and was in hospital for two weeks in scbu. then they let him home for christmas and then he was rushed back in to childrens ward for another 2wks due to jaundiced, unfortunetly natural light made him worse, we nearly killed him by taking him home for christmas! dante had fortnightly checkups at hospital until he turned 1. he was a tiny baby at 7lb but very long and skinny, they accused us of starving him during his first year even tho he was on solids at 3months he was eating so much! so we were told he had to have prescription milk, which he threw up and when they finally told us at 9months to put him on solids he didnt want to know! he was really under the normal weight but looks like me and his uncle who have always been underweight til i had the kids. xander is stocky like his uncle on his dads side but they are both deans i swear lol.

both my kids recovered in different ways and they are complete opposites xander is white blonde dantes hair is jet black!

what im trying to say is that jaundice is treatable if after two weeks lola has not recovered ask permission to take her for a walk outside for an hour or so. it might help her more. as for her being sleepy this is completely normal for a baby with jaundice xander was lying there asleep and dean was lying on the bed with me watching him whilst still in hospital and he put on a song that really got to us both, its our song, aerosmith dont wanna miss a thing!

but definately keep ontop of the situation and complain as much as you like! they were negligant they cant afford to continue to be negligant as it will improve your case if they do! keep complaining to get what has been promised.

every test done on lola check the dates on the equipment! dantes guthry test card was a year out of date when they used it, i was told he was fine and fully protected until 2 days before his birthday when i received a letter from a bigger hospital that does all the testing telling me the above stating he was not tested of protected. when i took it to the paper they ignored it cos the editors baby was in the bed in scbu next to dante and they were given impeccable service!

The nurses aren't too worried about her jaundice, the levels have dropped below critical and when she was first taken in they were 6 marks above critical so she has really improved. They have taken more blood from her today to test the levels since last night so fingers crossed they are either the same or improved more, if they go back up even by one mark she'll be back into intensive care.

She's been awake for the last hour, its the first time I've seen her eyes open properly, she's so beautiful. She had a good old cry too and none of us had heard her cry! The nurse said if they give her a bottle at 1pm feed and she takes more than 40mil and keeps it down they will remove the tube, I think just seeing her without tubes everywhere would really help.

The midwife's and nurses looking after them both right now are fantastic, doing everything they can for her so I can't fault them I think it's more the people who were caring for her during labour. She had been to the hospital 3 times before they actually kept her in, her contractions were one after another, she had no break in between and was 6cm dilated before they got a bed for her. She had no pain relief or anything for 30 hours and when they eventually kept her in, she wanted an epidural, she then went from 6cm to 10cm dilated in 48 minutes, was pushing for 50 minutes and then they used the forceps. She had a dry birth and the baby was back to back so all in all she had an awful labour so you'd think they would check her over before letting her leave the hospital and the baby because she was open to infection!

Ahhh it's just so stressful. I need sleep lol I think if I got some sleep I'd feel a little better but coming home at night and trying to settle in bed is impossible, I just can't stop thinking about them.

The first picture there is Lola the day she came home from hospital and looking at it now you can see shes not really the right colour but we didnt really notice, you don't think of looking for jaundice, that's not our job and then the others are since she's been in.. she looks completely different!

Thank you! She is the most beautiful little thing I've ever seen, I'm so proud of her and so proud of my sister for doing all this.

Can't wait to have them both home.

I was desperate for a baby and would of done anything to have one but being with my sister at the labour and then seeing her go through all this, I've really been put off lol

    xx

she is adorable... and this will be a story to tell to her grandkids, she is improving daily and your sister is startin on her recovery. Things like this happen they shouldnt but they do, shes not the first and she sadly wont be the last, its shocking in this day and age of medicine, but there now gettin all the help and support they should be, keep up the fantastic work of supporting them both and before long u will be havin a HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE party to celebrate there home coming and an even bigger first bday party for her to celebrate how far shes come and that shes a lil fighter and will kick anyones ass into touch ;-).
hugs and kisses daily to you all and i hope things keep improving minute by minute xxx

Her blood test results have just come back, they have gone up slightly which we didn't want but they will stick her back into the incubator for 12 hours and they are thinking of taking her off her anti-b's now. It's looking alot better :-) Can't wait to have them home xx

She's feeling a little better, she had a good nights sleep thanks to morphine so she's feeling a bit more positive. Her consultant is supposed to be round this afternoon with someone to start pysio and fit her for a brace, they'll asses her to see whether she'll be ok to leave hospital in a wheelchair and continue treatment at home but she lives in a 2nd floor flat with no lift!

The way they see it is, she's just taking up a bed, there is nothing they can do for her apart from pain killers and psysio and that can be done at home but she has no control of her bladder and bowel, she has a colostomy bag at the moment so they'd have to show someone how to change it and stuff.

Dunno how it's going to work but having her home is much better than 2 months in hospital like they were originally telling us.

The bag that goes inside her for her to wee lol I thought that's what it's called but yes that's what she has, she wets herself otherwise as she can't feel it.

Lola's infection level has gone up again, they aren't sure why and can't pin point what the infection is either. It's like everytime we have some good news, bad news follow :-(

Just so tired now and can't switch off!
