Ok. Attention has been turned to the music and while a dj would be good, most DJs these days put together a playlist on a laptop and press "play" then add songs as requested throughout the night. So, we were thinking "We can do that. Easy!"

At leat it is in theory. Has anyone tried this? Were there any issues?

Personally I think a DJ is a safer bet just in case any hiccups on the night someone is on hand to sort it out.

I went to a wedding last year that had a Funky Diva, tbh not sure what sort of functionality these have but it seemed to me that everyone was up and down all night putting one track or another on.

We are probably not going to have a DJ, not sure I can see the point apart from wouldn't have the flashing lights etc. We are putting together three play lists on an iPod and the venue will be playing them at the right time. First one is when everyone is turning up, then another is the First Dance and then the final one will be for the evening.

This way we get music we actually like :-) Personally I can't stand the cheesey music that is typical at a wedding and as this is my wedding I don't see why I need to pretend to like it.

Its easy to get hold of disco lights to hire and dj equipment etc, so you could have speakers. We're having the first few hours of just an ipod with some lights, as didn't want to pay a conventional wedding DJ, then my H2B friends are djing (H2B is a dj and knows lots!!) So not quite the same as what you're after.
But its so easy to organise something yourself, as you say most of them just plug the laptop in and thats it for the night and charge a fortune to do it. If you hire in the equipment you need, (often at a fraction of the cost) then you're also sorted for technical problems as they come and set it all up, and if you do have a problem, someone is either on hand, or a phone call away to sort it. xx

We hired a band and in between their 2 sets they sorted a laptop DJ set with requests for about 20-30 minutes - went down a treat! Seriously if you're bride and groom the last thing you want to worry about is the music, we had a playlist for during the welcome drinks and menu and I was stressing out when the venue weren't playing them on time!

Could work out well if you designate an usher or best man or someone to be in charge of it. Then you can just relax and enjoy :)
    (cool bean pie lol)

LegoBride: True. I think I may hand it off to my sister (MOH) which I'm sure she'll be thrilled with (I may be accused of being a bridezilla when I tell her when each playlist is to start lol)

Bridalmiss: we will look into a band, but I'm really pick about music. With a playlist we can put a mix on but I'm fairly sure my grandparents won't be impressed with an Emilie Autumn cover band (if I could find one) :)
