Hi everyone. New to site and just been having a wander around it to see what's out there. Im getting married in Aug 2012. Have booked venue and ordered cake and am going to look at some dresses next week but my next concern is the evening entertainment. Do I book a band or a DJ that is the question! Im not really a band person but I know that's what the tradition is at weddings. Has anyone ever been to a wedding with a DJ and was it any good? Would like to know what you think.xx

Where do I even start to look for a DJ and how much do they roughly cost? Ive noticed that 'Hire A Band' website but it doesnt give you a list of DJs.

It depends what kind of guests you have. We're having a dj, but its to each persons tastes.

I didnt realise DJs were so popular nowadays, I thought everyone favoured bands more. Bands are so expensive though and what if they're not very good. I think you have all helped and I will be defo going for a DJ. I just need to find a decent one now, ha ha!

we're looking at having a singer @ the afternoon reception, something a little more personal (someone local to my parents, just have to contact him!) and then a DJ in the evening so everyone can boogie to their fave songs xxx

We wanted a live band but our venue room isn't that big and it would eat into half of the dance floor. We found some really good ones though that do all kinds of music to suit all generations. Neither me or the h2b are big on dancing. (neither are half of our guests) so we thought about having something like a frank Sinatra tribute guy that also doubles up as a disco. That way it suits more of the guests that are coming as they will like one or the other.

My advice if you do want a band though is go and listen to them live before you book them and check out the song list that they can play. Also make sure they have their own lighting/sound system and in some cases the venues ask them to have public liability insurance for a certain amount. There is nothing better than having a life decent band to liven up the mood.

Dj's can be a good option but again check out what song lists they have and make sure they will play what you want rather than the typical cack that some of them play that empty the dance floor. Again they may need public liability insurance etc.

We're having both too. Starting off with a DJ till around 8pm, then the band do around three hours then back to the DJ. It's your own personal choice and I wouldn't have a band just because you think it's what you should do, especially with them being expensive. I've been to some fantastic wedding that have just been DJ/Disco. You can even give them a playlist and tell them what you want or don't want to hear. Even have your guests send a song request back with their RSVP's then you're catering for your whole party. x

I'm having a dj too, seems they're coming back into fashion. My sis had a Sinatra style guy singing during the afternoon and during the meal and then he was the dj in the evening, multi-tasking!!

We are having a dj. I tend to find people don't dance as much at weddings with bands. You a fan of Charmed by any chance? X

I'd like both but we can't afford it. Shop around with discos, too cheap is often 4 a reason. Be clear about ur venue, hopefully they will have worked it b4 so it avoids last min hidden costs like if they need to carry their equipment up the stairs etc. Good luck x
